We have almost completed our Polywood collection, Matthew. I have the Adirondack chairs and small table, 2 rockers and small table, the dining table with bench and chairs, and 2 of the Vineyard swings all in slate gray. I got a piece each season and we absolutely love them. Took me years but totally worth it. A bucket of warm soapy water and the hose each spring and they’re clean and ready to go in a matter of minutes. As we age, we didn’t want the yearly scrub and paint maintenance. Also, wanted to let you know I found the Eclipse Hydrangea this week from First Editions. The foliage color is gorgeous.

❤We weeded/cleaned out the front garden last weekend and my husband made me laugh saying “Hey, there’s another azalea in here!” 😂 I bought several small bushes at Lowe’s for $4.50 last autumn so he asked what I was going to bring home this weekend. Definitely more daffodils, but thinking about a few more perennial flowers. 😊

It's always enjoyable to walk around your garden with you. I had to chuckle at your comment about wanting to do more maintenance. My current garden is three years old so some of the perennials have matured. I was walking around some of the beds this morning saying to myself that next year I should focus on deadheading and cutting back the plants that I have over the season, But my next thought was, no, you will probably take on new projects -- there is still so much plantable space! You've made enormous progress -- I look forward to seeing how it all turns out.

Your gardens are beautiful! It’s amazing how much has changed in the short time you’ve been in your new home. We’re in southern Illinois…our growing conditions are similar so I thought I’d pass on this info. My heucheras have an issue with heaving out of the ground. Upon some investigation, they will do that due to freezing and thawing during the cold months. The suggestion was made to add extra soil around the crown and extra mulch to help combat the issue. Interesting enough, the heuchera I have planted in landscape rocks have never done this. It’s such a frustration since mine seem to die after heaving out of the soil…and they can be very costly to replace. Thanks for all your garden updates!
@SouthernersGarden
@SouthernersGarden 3 ай бұрын
I’ve not had that issue, but I plant most of mine in spring so they have plenty of time to settle in and would recommend the same for heuchera.

You might want to transplant the Winecraft Smokebush before it gets huge lower branches. I planted 2 ( I moved one last Spring) in the fall of ‘22. The one I didn’t get transplanted is at least 10’ tall now with thick branches at the bottom. Even my husband said it’s too big for him to dig. I will have to keep it trimmed down every year. They have a strange look to them with those branches shooting straight up.

Matthew do you plan to use cardboard under your mulch by the swingset? I bet that would really help accomplish your goal with the grass. Wish I was your neighbor, I’d love to come help you weed!!! What an amazing accomplishment you’ve made in the last year! Can’t wait to watch more of this journey😊
@SouthernersGarden
@SouthernersGarden 3 ай бұрын
I used to, but because we primarily have fescue I’ve discovered that a thick layer of wood chips will just kill the grass anyway, so I don’t waste the time using cardboard or contractors paper.

Mathew have you or any viewers been dealing with jumping worms ? They look like regular earthworms but are much more active thus the name jumping worms. They have turned my soil into a granular consistency and I hope that will not kill my hostas. As I find them I kill them. Any info will be greatly appreciated !!! Thank you in advance. Have a great day gardening friends .😊 Matthew your property has come a long way in a short time !!!

Is that caryopteris sterile or at least low seed set? I bought an unbranded one locally at Bern's almost a decade ago and removed it 2 years later. I am still finding starts all over my yard, up to 30ft away. I let one grow this year but would love to replace it with one that isn't so generous!
