Last fall, I cut my pine barks down to the ground, and they are so beautiful this year. They both grew so much, I had to trim them back a bit this season. I recommend you cut the back to nothing. You won't be disappointed with the new look come Spring/Summer.

Your front flower garden looks amazing with all the trees you have now. It gives the flowerbed a whole different dynamic.

Welcome to my world down in south Texas. To go without rain for a long time is the norm. I get so jealous of your beautiful roses and dahlias. Even during a drought they look good to me.

That’s because they get drip irrigation honestly. This stuff would have looked way worse otherwise.

I had to relocate my Diablo Ninebark, so I cut it back severely. Well, it came back with a vengeance. It didn’t get affected by the cut at all. I also have 2 autumn jubilee Ninebarks that I trim each year by about 1/3 & they also respond well.

I REALLY can’t believe how much you’ve gotten done since moving in ! Everything is looking very good especially considering the drought, rain I find is ALWAYS the best and makes plants really grow, when I hand water my plants survive but they don’t thrive. 🌺💚🙃

Hi Matthew! Considering your weather. everything is still looking so pretty. I like the trees you are adding to the front flower bed. They really did improve the balance. I, also, like your ideas for changes in that bed. It will be so pretty. Your shrub bed is looking good. I could see the hydrangeas through the fence and they are still looking so pretty. The new rose will be pretty. I'm looking forward to seeing where you plant your new plants. Thank you so much for sharing!

Good evening Matthew, lovely video and information as always. I have ninebarks that are over 5 feet tall. Also have the little devil ninebarks. I have pruned both varieties back severely every fall. I have never had a problem, they always look so healthy and thrive all summer long. Thank you for sharing your garden, I am always looking for new ideas. 🌿🧡🌿

I literally used a chainsaw to cut down nine barks that were woody and lopsided in growth. I didn’t care if they came back or not but now that they are coming back, I like them much better.

Here in VA, we had more than 3 weeks of NO rain and 100 degrees or better. I simply could not work in that. The humidity was about 80% if we were lucky. I stopped watering with my hose and let the sprinkler system reach wherever it could. At the end of it all, lots of things had died or were very damaged. I decided to dig out whatever had done poorly and replant with drought tolerant, deer resistant plants. It’s pricey and hard work but worth it for the end results over time.

I have a huge section of my yard that I am trying to fill up too. You have some great ideas. I do think that a straight staggered bed would look a little much. I like how you have left open areas so you can peek through and see other plants on the other side. It is difficult to deal with all the issues like will this match that, will it take the same amount of water, do I have to deep water rather than every day and how do I get different water needs to the same area. I will go outside and just stare at it until overwhelm takes over. LOL. You amaze me at how much you get done and have a full time job?!

I'm not sure if you could find them in your area, but I just found a hydrangea called "early evolution". It's a panicle, but it starts blooms mid-late May and it looks very much like a lace-cap. It also only gets 2ft x 2ft so you can fit tons in an area
@SouthernersGarden3 ай бұрын
I did see those a couple years ago at Cultivate. I think I prefer Tiny Quick Fire for a small paniculata hydrangea.

Hi, I love how your garden is coming along, particularly the front bed. 😊😊😊 The new blue lace cap hydrangea is amazing. I am sure that over here in the UK we will not be able to get it😢.

It’s not new. It’s a species variety that’s pretty old. That’s why it’s hard to find.

I think your planting beds are looking pretty good for fall. My humongous coleus are camouflaging my fantastic crop of weeds. Heat and a little moisture this summer make the weeds grow wild. Question: what is going on with your maple tree under which your hydrangea trial bed is planted?

The drought. Trees around our area look horrible.

Hi Matthew- Awsome post as always- thank you! Can you tell me where you purchased your Kindred Spirit Oak? Im hoping to do a wall of them at the back of my property. I ordered just one as a trial last year, and it was tall, lovely, and healthy except they folded the top to fit it in the box. Good old fedex took awhile to deliver it, and even though I staked it to try and straighten/protect it, the top 2 feet broke off. Besides telling me where you purchased yours, do you think I should give up on the one I have with no leader? Thank you for any advise/help you can offer.
@BettyBrancato3 ай бұрын
Ps: I have cut back a Nine Bark (Diablo, I think) and it came back with a vengance! Dayton, Ohio here.
@SouthernersGarden3 ай бұрын
Certainly don't give up on the one you have! It'll establish a new leader as it gets settled in and you may not even be able to tell it by the time it grows in. This one I got from the Brown Nursery tree auction last year as well ball & burlap, but they should have them year round (except maybe right now since they just had their auction). You could always call and check. The ones I had at my last home came from Natorp's and I think they regularly carry them. They were containerized though and did require staking until they were better established and had stronger trunks.
