For decades it's gathered dust in a Pukekohe garden shed. Now this set of heavy lead typeface has a fascinating story to tell about the history of Chinese New Zealanders.

my grandfather is Maori Chinese hes 91 , just recently he moved closer to where i live which gave me time to spend with him and try to find out more about his dad, He told me when he was a young boy he had to work in the gardens i think he was referring to garden in Orakei or Bastion Point, he told me his father who was Chinese was only aloud as far as the gardens and he wasnt allowed to sleep any where else but in the gardens, My koro told me he worked as a hawker selling kumara and also selling fruit and veggies in his fathers store he was left in charge, my Koro told me he didnt know his fathers real name he called him Pop , all i know is that he was Chinese , what ive always wondered is if my Koros dad knew his son was the great great grandchild of the local chief Tekawau ,i am trying to find out more as im a grandfather as well today and 1 day i know my grandsons will ask me about my Koro and his Chinese heritage, im doing the best a can but to see this story gives me hope to carry on searching......Hey my Chinese whanau you will always have a place in this maori boys whanau till we leave this earth...blessing my Whanau.

Fabulous. Thank you. There's so much Chinese-NZ history to tell, most of it not so good for the Chinese. I share Ruth Lam's hope that it will be told.
