ok, the rubber band across the nose is ridiculously funny. 1929 comedy still holds up .

These period films give us in 2024 what this snapshot of life presents. Thelma’s “”father” comes out ready to drive his new car wearing a duster, cap with goggles, and gauntlets on his hands. Thelma is not going out until she gets her hat. Charlie wears what was called a “sailor straw hat,” an extremely popular hat with men during the summer months. Practically all the women in this two-reeler wear a certain style of pull down hat popular in the 1920’s. All fascinating stuff from an era now long gone.

And the streetcar system. The women's hats were neat, the close-fitting cloche style seems to be standard in 1929. Charley's hat was called a skimmer.

16:23 - Found an article (H.A.M.B.) regarding the _Auto Coaster:_ "In 1929 Los Angeles opened an amusement park with an automotive roller coaster. The roller coaster was constructed of wooden planks, banked turns, 5-10 foot hills, and stretched for 2,243 feet. Basically you would pay for a one trip ticket that allowed you to drive your 1920’s automobile around the track, following guidelines that were placed on the wood for cars to follow. A railing was erected around the edges of the track to keep cars on course, and there was room to pass another vehicle if you had to. There was also a speed limit on the track as to how fast you were suppose to be able to drive around the course. Once you were done with your driving experience, you could then park in the middle of the automotive roller coaster if you wanted to for an additional fee."

It was an automobile roller coaster that was a short-lived attraction in Culver City, California.

Honestly, while I’m a fan of Hal Roach shorts, I find Chase’s shorts pale in comparison to the studio’s Laurel and Hardy and Our Gang output. I will say, though, this short is much more fluid than other, more clunky sound shorts produced in the 1929 transition year.
