Reni, using only a snare, a floor tom, a kick drum, a hi-hat and a splash cymbal carries this song from start to finish with his precision metronomic timing. He was and is a colossus on the drums. And he was also the best singer in the Roses but that's a whole other story.

I think it’s hard for people now to understand that their ramshackleness was part of their charm. That punk spirit was still part of it. One of the reasons they were/are so loved was their closeness to their fans and the sense that despite their obvious skill as musicians it could all fall over at any moment - but when it clicked it was unbelievable. Magic. No one went to a gig looking for perfection, you wanted shared moments of transcendence.

Spot on mate that’s what I love about live music, playing in a band myself, songwriting guitar tunes and lyrics with my best mates from school, played together for years do knowing each others playing inside out, so if one of us fucks up and makes a mistake we know how to cover and play our way out of it which for me is great for creativity as you usually end up discovering new riffs and variations from what it usually is, so gives more feel and dimensions to a song, giving a more natural human feel and not so static and rigid when you play perfectly tight never making a mistake it’s so perfectly rehearsed which then can loose feel and groove to a tune, which the Roses have/had in abundance, that freedom and groove with various accidentals which gives the tracks so much more than many bands. Having a roughness to live music for me is the big charm and what I love instead of a totally polished band can get boring. The Roses one of the greatest bands, one of Manchester’s finest, Ian’s vocals, yeh not perfect or in tune live, the such brilliant powerful tunes, great lyrics, and his Manc swagger, character, charisma all creates that cool frontman image not mattering if the vocals drift a bit adding to the overall blend and mix created. Shear brilliance my friend.
@rna491617 күн бұрын
@@thedeadxtras9927 there’s an obsession with clean perfect performances by so many (even really good) acts now - the aim being to get as close to the original recording as possible - which I cant relate to tbh. Fans buy a ticket and they are disappointed if it isn’t just the way they expect to be, how they’ve already heard it and liked it. It’s treating live music as professional performance rather than emotional experience.

But Reni is the best musician in the band, IMO, by a good distance, and maybe it's because he hid all the years the SR were broke up, but he barely even gets a mention when I hear about Stone Roses these days. Then 7.44 Reni's subtle art of drumming; knowing just when to play soft & gentle then building up into a powerful raging funky octopus! Losing himself in the rhythms. He always plays just right for each song, all that effort involved, and he still sings so well. Genius, just oozes natural talent. Love Mani's improvised bassline too. They're all so great. If your pal's name is Stu M, 42 yrs old and lives in greater Manchester - tell him I want my fucking video back! He's had it for 20 years - which I think is more than enough! :-P

In the league of tightest rhythm sections ever, Mani and Reni never get the appreciation they deserve.

I don't know about that. I'm a semi serious bassist and they are hugely respected by anyone who knows what they are talking about... a latter day McCabe and Bruce!

Hands down the greatest song of all time performed by the world's greatest Rock 'n' Roll outfit. Probably the best thing that has ever happened in Blackpool also ...

I Am the Resurrection The Stone Roses Down down, you bring me down I hear you knocking at my door and I can't sleep at night Your face, it has no place No room for you inside my house I need to be alone Don't waste your words I don't need anything from you I don't care where you've been or what you plan to do Turn turn, I wish you'd learn There's a time and place for everything I've got to get it through Cut loose, you're no use I couldn't stand another second in your company Don't waste your words I don't need anything from you I don't care where you've been or what you plan to do Stone me, why can't you see You're a no-one nowhere washed up baby who'd look better dead Your tongue is far too long I don't like the way it sucks and slurps upon my every word Don't waste your words I don't need anything from you I don't care where you've been or what you plan to do I am the resurrection and I am the light I couldn't ever bring myself to hate you as I'd like I am the resurrection and I am the light I couldn't ever bring myself to hate you as I'd like
