One thing I think you guys forgot to mention is the 2019+ STIs come with the Type RA short block so they're a bit beefier. People are starting to hit 450+ whp without worry now with the proper mods.

I bought a brand new 2015 WRX base... ended up trading it in for a used 2016 WRX STI Limited w/o wing. They're both great cars, but they are entirely different cars. This video was the deciding factor in me seeking out a buying a 2021 STI. I watched the review from 2018 and y'all didn't have too many nice things to say about the car. That you guys revisited it four years later after test driving a hundred other cars... and saying how great it is in winter (with the right tires!). I live in the Pacific Northwest- we have all four seasons, and having an AWD car that is this good in all conditions makes me very, very happy. I love the fact that this car won't automatically brake, won't play with the steering when I'm on the highway, it won't beep at me when both hands are not on the wheel. Like Jacob, I hate having a car where I can say "Hey Subaru, warm up my butthole" and it turns on the seat heat... bleh. I guess I'm just getting old, because I just want a car that is fun to drive, and rewards me for driving well. Stirring the gears, heel-tow shifting, understeer... the New generation cars take mediocre drivers and make them better, but they keep good drivers from being great.

I used to own a pretty highly modified 2006 Subaru Legacy GT (very similar 2.5 turbo engine as the STI). I did a lot of power, brake and suspension mods to that car, but by a huge margin, the best modification I ever did to that car was replacing the original 5spd manual and viscous LSD rear diff with a DCCD 6spd and matching clutch LSD rear diff from an 04 STI. I cannot overstate how huge of an improvement that was. With the original 5spd, it would spin the inside front tire when powering out of hard corners (like a FWD car) and under steer under power. With the 6spd with functioning DCCD, you can select between serious grip/no drama cornering, understeer (if you lock the center diff) or full-on drift mode if you completely unlock the center diff (especially with the older STIs because they have more of a rear torque bias). The proper STI 6spd is also an incredibly strong transmission whereas the other manuals for Subarus are pretty delicate (including the non-STI 6spd). The transmission itself makes the STI *far* superior to any WRX. Not to mention that the old school Subarus are super easy to work on and if you don’t mod the engine, they last a really, really long time.

Bought a '02 WRX sedan when I could afford it and learned to wrench on it. Great fun with snow tires. I've modded the STI a fair bit and it's a great car. But this came with drawbacks. Now that cars have progressed, it's definitely old school. Laggy engine, poor fuel economy, rough ride, loud (2 hours and my ears are shot with the turboback exhaust), modest at track days without mods. It's a hoot on backroads though. 21 year old me couldn't wait to get one. 39 year old me kind of wants something faster and more civilized. Then again, every time I get behind the wheel, it puts a smile on my face as it makes me work to go fast in it. Adding '18 wheels and properly sized winter tires for the modest US Mid-Atlantic weather has been the best move ever. I wish that a hatch was available (STI Crosstrek!!!!), but otherwise I love every single trip taken in this MT AWD sedan. Coming from a '01 Integra GS-R sedan, the clutch takes a bit of acclimation with its really high engagement point. Otherwise, rowing the gears through the rumble of the EJ power plant is a visceral joy. I'm not sure that there could have been another [reasonably priced] This is definitely a fun summer vehicle with high performance summer tires. I have yet to break grip or even feel like I've hit a cornering limit on public roads with reasonable speeds. The climate control works great I completely mirror your test drive experience with the wonderful mix of physical HVAC and touch controls. Everything serves a purpose and just works as intended. The heated Recaro seats are great. The push button and keyless touch entry are a perfect modern touch. And the blindspot / cross traffic sensor are mandatory in today's SUV packed parking lots -- it is just enough safety / collision mitigation capability for this vehicle. I have not yet played with the differential adjustments, incredibly. Having the car managed the AWD system -- especially in poor traction situations -- has been successful. I'd like to better understand the effects and benefits / detriments of moving the power bias between the front and rear wheels in real driving situations. That's really the last unexplored feature in my driving experience.

I’ve owned a 2019 STI for three years as of Feb 2022. Best and most fun to drive car I’ve ever owned. When you use the center diff auto +1 it adds more resistance to the front diff which you can immediately feel in the steering, it gets heavier, -1 adds more resistance to the rear diff which you can also feel in the steering weight because it gets slightly lighter. First mods anyone should make to their STI should be weight reductions, get lighter wheels and suspension. I added forged Titan7 wheels and FA500 coilovers and they completely transformed the way the car moves. Feels much quicker and lighter. I’m not modding exhaust or engine because I don’t want to lose the stock EJ rumble. All I have under the hood is a strut tower brace, IAG street AOS and cyl4 cooling mod. The STI is a modern day classic and I think they will start to appreciate in value in a few years. Great job with this video, glad to see some appreciation for this amazing and unique Subaru.

I've been saying this for years. The STI is the oldest new car you can buy today, and it's exactly for that reason that I bought it. Nothing else feels like it, for better or for worse depending on if it's what you're looking for. So happy I picked up my 2020, it's definitely the end of an era. In stock form it's good, not great. But it really only needs a bit more power and you're set. After finishing my 20g turbo build, it's perfect.
@lightsy20102 жыл бұрын
Exactly why I bought mine, lol. A few years ago it was not something I’d consider, but now since all cars are refined and shit, I picked up my 21 in November. This + my MK6 Golf R make two cars I really like. I’ve only done small stuff to the STi (and mechanically only an AWE exhaust) and I love it. Slow as balls though.. but still fun.
@ntg442 жыл бұрын
@@lightsy2010 exactly. I wrote off the car in 2015 because I wish it had a bigger power bump. But the sports car landscape was completely different in 2015 and cars were still trending in the direction we were all familiar with. Fast forward to 2022 and almost every modern car is fast, ugly, and boring. I couldn't think of a single car under 80k that I was interested in enough to buy, so I went for the STI as a bucket list car with extra budget for a build, and do not regret it one bit. It's not some revolutionary performance bargain, but it's from a time when cars were simpler and efficiency and multiple personalities weren't the first priorities. I fully expect this generation to be sought after in 10-15 years as the last of the STIs "the way they used to make 'em."

Funny, I had an ‘05 STi back in the day and loved it, daily driver, track stuff, drove it through the gnarliest weather living in the high country of CO.... had kids, sold it as it wasn’t comfortable, had a really terrible ride and wasn’t practical... the 2015 came out and I just wasn’t into it since the drivetrain really hadn’t changed but now, maybe I am nostalgic but this thing seems super appealing again, a simple, raw motor sports car in the best of the late ‘90’s rally tradition which to me, was the favorite era of the WRC. That’s why I still love it I guess, it’s like a throwback to another era but brand new with a warranty... rough around the edges, with its flaws but a damn solid drivetrain.

I had a 2017 Sport tech and it had all the bells and whistles, push to start, keyless entry harman hardon sound system and it was a great daily driver. With snow tires i plowed some almost grill high snow going up hill easily. I totally disagree that this car would not work as a family car. The trunk is huge and the back seats are super spacious, its just so practical and fun. I will say the worst and best part of owning one was the EJ motor. In the city with a light foot it was getting 14L/100km, thats about as same as a first gen GS400(4L v8) and the constant worry about the engine killing itself. Its well known issue of oil starvation in corners and roasting cylinder 4 prevented me from taking it to the track. Its not as if they wouldn't die stock either, the base tune is terrible and you needed supporting mods to keep the engine healthy if you are into track days. That being the chassis is amazing on this generation. You get great visibility in the car, car handled amazingly in stock form, spacious, comfortable, the subaru rumble and it was very fun! I'd say the best all around STI to date.
