I hated the arches until i seen them in person. They are not bad and for someone that lives in Western Pa they are actually pretty purposeful. The exposed rolled lip on the older WRX are good looking but they do suffer from chips pretty easily especially in the salt belt. Along with the wheel arches which are an improvement for winter use is the fact the that front bumper cover is roughly 6 different pieces (5 being unpainted plastic). So if you do hit a snow drift, dead animal or ice drift while parking and you crack the lower portion of the bumper cover you can replace the middle section for $65 dollars, the Side fog light area for $34 or the very lower corner area that extends into the wheel arch for $15 dollars. So a $15-$65 dollar part could be replacing an $800-1000 dollar job on the previous generation. It might not be as sporty but i actually think its an improvement for daily driving and especially daily driving in the winter/rust/salt belt areas.

It's really refreshing that the people at Subaru were willing to speak so candidly about things like having only a certain allocation of funds, and deciding to focus those funds on developing the sedan instead splitting the funds between developing a sedan and a hatchback.
@MrNgMichael2 жыл бұрын
But I think the suits at subaru are the ones that are making a once fun and happy brand into something that's just money hungry now. I think them splitting away from the Impreza platform for the WRX was kind of shooting themselves in the foot, because there is already an Impreza hatch that they just need to toss a bigger motor into and everyone would've been happy. Hatchbacks/station wagons are still pretty popular, as you saw with the 10th gen Civic, and that 1/4-1/3 of civics sold were the hatchback models. Heck, I used to have a '13 WRX hatch, but bought a '18 Civic hatch because it was better on gas.
@stuntmonkey002 жыл бұрын
Except that the explanation is complete BS. The Levorg exists and is on its 2nd generation now. Australia is getting a WRX wagon on this platform. The real reason why they don't want to bring a wagon is because of the perverse US fuel economy regs that favor crossovers over cars. If you take a Levorg and a Forester, the Forester has a less stringent "bucket' category to meet since for the same footprint size, "light trucks" are subject to less stringent fuel economy regs. In other words, every manufacturer in the US has been trying to shift their mix towards CUV's away from cars because the regs are tilted in their favor.

A lot of Subarus are sold in the snowbelt and therefore often exposed to road salt. My bet is those plastic wheel arches are there to avoid rust problems in those areas which brings up another outstanding problem with Subaru namely the quality of their paint and rust proofing which has been historically sub-par over the years
@pilotscott12042 жыл бұрын
You are correct. Not only is rust a problem, but leading up to that, paint gets blasted off of anything behind the wheels, including plastic. My rear bumper on my BMW needed repainted in ONE YEAR from the sand and salt (150+ inches of snow per year)!

It’s not an arch issue. The Crosstrek manages to be funky cool. It’s that the WRX has skinny low profile tires with a lifted, boxy plastic cladding lower trim. This makes it appear like those lifted trucks that run skinny tires and big wheels. It’s very unpleasant. Wagons/hatches also can pull off the plastic arches a lot better than a sedan shape. As a WRX owner, here are my thoughts: - Hate the plastic wheel arches. I wonder how they would look if they were painted to match the body. - Hate the rear diffuser. It protrudes too far out the back of the bumper and looks weird. - Not a fan of the taillights. They look like they were taken from a Civic. - Agree with Doug that the responsiveness of the older gen (what I daily drive) isn't great. But that changes quite a bit with a Cobb Accessport and a tune. I'd be interested to hear/see a comparison between a 2022 WRX and a stage 1 tuned previous-gen WRX. I think (well, really hope) they'd be comparable in pedal-feel and general responsiveness. - I'm actually disappointed that the car is longer and wider than the previous gen. I'm a fan of small cars and my WRX is the sweet spot - just big enough for the rear passengers to be comfortable, but no longer than it needs to be.

Nail on the head with every point. Engine responsiveness is nice, but why do they insist on playing catchup with economy sport hatchbacks still after so many years? The 2006 WRX had pretty much the same power figure back then and was a lot lighter still. It feels like they're just stuck dead in the waters with no real direction. WRX as name suggests should be rally inspired. I don't see anything "rally inspired" in this car at all. The good parts are carry-over stuff from previous models, and in every other category it's brought closer to an avg joe's grocery getter. The WRX GT will probably be pretty dang close if not more expensive than the base STI. They made it auto only to push the enthusiasts into an STI if they want a manual with all the goodies. You want the performance option, then buy the performance trim. This keeps the WRX and STI separated by more than just HP and prevents the sacrilege of giving the STI an automatic option. Think of the GT as more of an STI-lite with an auto, instead of the top WRX trim.

I find it funny that Subaru admitted that the new engine would be more receptive to "tuning", but Subaru has been more than well known for denying warranty claims for even the slightest modifications so I'm not sure why they'd use that as a "selling point". @@Matthew-vw6gy fair enough, I respect your opinion. What I meant about the bumper was that it just had too much plastic showing like it was unpainted rather than how it was designed. Let's hope on the next revision of this WRX, they will improve on the wheel arches and more colour on the bumper .

@@Nlmtella Subaru has the Outback Wilderness which looks more practical and ready for some light off roads. And the wheel arches look better on that model than the WRX. Guess Subaru want to to cater for all and gauge a reaction then decide on the next revision.

I’m glad that Doug acknowledges that a lot of Subaru’s reasons for design choices in this car were bullcrap. The styling was just a plainly *bad* choice (I mean, that trunk hatch looks really narrow), but I know exactly why we didn’t get a power boost this generation. It’s the same reason the new Civic Si didn’t give us more power. I believe that automakers are scared to make properly powerful gas cars these days. Emissions regulations are causing them to focus more on efficiency, and gas vehicles as we know them are on their way out. As a result, development is targeted for making cars “feel” faster and scratching that itch while providing as little actual improvement in power as possible. If they are telling the truth-and the new engine is more robust and tunable-there will be plenty of relatively easy ways to get more power out of the engine. I’m reserving judgement on the “Subaru Performance Transmission” until I can drive one myself, but I will be surprised if it’s anywhere near as snappy as Hyundai’s DCT or Porsche’s PDK. Name dropping either of those is potentially a big mistake, because if they don’t actually deliver, they *will* get called out on it.

BUT, the 2015 was still a good looking car, if they hadn't shown the amazing concept I wouldn't have known better. Almost bought one too, but dealer markups led me to buying an s2000 instead. As for this new one, it's awful. I would never buy a car with this much plastic, not even an SUV. I suspect the market will agree and we will see a redesign sooner than later. @@CalgaryCooper every single car that was inspired by a concept car has never looked anything like the concept car. Concept cars are impractical in almost every way. A car famous for a color called "World Rally Blue" changing their aesthetic in a way that looks more "off-roady". I fucking love it. I live in the mountains in northern California and we get tons of rain and snow here, I'm constantly on rough and uncomfortable dirt roads and need the AWD to get around. As such, this is a perfect upgrade to the exterior for me. A note on the engine choice. Thinking about the vehicles it shares an engine with reminds me of the old school Civic B20 swaps. Great for tuning, lasted longer under abuse. Another upgrade imo.

It really is a sad fate for the legendary WRX. Normally I'm one to defend redesigns - mk7 gti, Mk8 gti, last get WRX, and WRX hatch back in the day. I understand it takes people time to get use to new styling when we are so use to how the current gen looks. But subaru really messed this one up. For the first time since I was a kid the WRX just fell off my list of cars I'd buy. Regardless of if it drives better or not, styling plays a huge role in the car and its just so far off. Looks lumpy and disproportional. Perhaps the mid gen refresh will revive the car?
