There some things I would like to bring up for discussion: - HACE is not a more severe form of AMS, it is an own entity, can occur on its own - if you want to put a prize tag on it, I'd say that HACE is the most severe form, at least the most lethal form of HAI - HACE has to be treated quickly, you have to descend immediately and residual symptoms can last for weeks to months - there is more and more evidence that almost any high altitude mountaineer developes cerebral edema to a certain point - this can be symptomatic, but doesn't have to be - it is more and more thought that HACE is rather a result of hypoxia of sensible neurons (especially cerebellum, corpus callosum) than of general edema Anyhow. It is a exiciting topic. Good lecture there !

Great video, very informative, however there is two points I want to make: 1) Dexamethasone should never be given as a prophylactic for altitude sickness. It can mask the symptoms of HACE until its too late. Acetazolamide is a much better option as it assists/speeds up acclimatisation, but does not mask any symptoms. 2) Salmeterol is also great for treatment of HAPE

Great video. I was hoping to find the mechanism by which the edema occurs. Does sodium get excreted with the bicarb in the bicarb diuresis which then leads to acute hyponatremia and edema?
