Teenage girls are teenage girls around the world, making scrapbooks of their favourite boybands :) Only recently said good bye to the last of the scrap books and posters I had saved. But it felt right. Currently doing my between season declutter and clean and it really doesn’t take long anymore in turn it has affected how I consume now too which also makes things much easier. Thank you for the trip down memory lane ladies x

I was a lot like this couple. I had so many collectables and nostalgia pieces and things from childhood. It took two house moves and about 5 rounds of decluttering over about 6 years to do it. You have to go a little at a time and it's clear this couple will declutter further now they have started. I made a small fortune selling all my collections and retro toys from the 80s and 90s so keeping hold of this stuff for so long wasn't a bad thing really 😃

I think you nailed it, It’s the multiple passes that help. So don’t beat yourself up over stuff. Grouping and letting it sit in my mind often means next time I can let go. I also need to be in the right headspace. Visualising the end result

WOW! The living room makeover/declutter looks great! They had way too much stuff for the space. I think a lot of us are guilty of that too sometimes. I know I am. I am slowly decluttering stuff but definitely need to declutter more. I will never be a minimalist, but I don't like a lot of clutter either. I think you found the right balance in their apartment.

Sometimes the smallest things can help to get the momentum going again! A few of my solutions include making a list of things that are bothering me so I can focus my attention on things that I can solve now vs. later, micro decluttering in the larger space (like a small box of keepsake trinkets or a box of papers), rearranging furniture, organizing a small space (like a drawer), or even clearing a surface. Most times that’s all it takes for me to get started again with a more challenging space.

My SIL passed away 2 weeks ago. Helping my MIL cleaning her room made me realize that you don't want to leave the world for others having to take care of your things. She had so much merchs from a lot of KPOP artists and bands, but it's okay, we got to donate them to our younger cousins. So, I started to declutter papers and clothes, tho it felt very hard since I kept on thinking 'I might need this and those'. After watching a lot of your vids, I started putting a time limit (6 months/1 year) so that I can let them go easily.

I am never happy with my spaces 😆 I'm continuously decluttering. Even now, I went through my makeup, ok all good, nope a month later doing it again and I'm not big enough to get pr yet. I dont do rounds if decluttering, it's all the time. The lessons you have taught this couple will keep them going forever. I'm also convinced that most people want a bigger home because of their stuff. If they keep decluttering, they may realize they dont need to move because who needs that stress really lol. I also believe that if you cannot display all your items what's the point? The books I own now, 90, are displayed, the rest are electronic (and I have a lot) all I have stored is Christmas, outdoor cushions and hubby's things which happens to be a TV stand. I'm not a minimalist but not a maximalist either. (Unless you count Harry Potter stuff 🤪) even though at this stage you're not done, I'm pretty sure they already felt a huge difference and could breathe better. Another amazing episode, thank you. 😘💖😘💖👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

The first of April’s videos I watched was her mother-in-laws declutter episode 1 where they start with the garage. One area for items to get rid of and one area for items they might want to use later. I was so inspired I cleaned my garage and started my two areas. The over flowing mess I’m dealing with in my condo was decluttered somewhat pre-move although sometimes stuff was just slung in boxes but enough to count as time 1. This round number 2 is the serious do I want this going forward. Still in progress as I’m pretty sure those saying a hoarder moved in wouldn’t want me as a neighbor. Round 3 is in progress as well. Remember the two areas in garage? It has been a huge help knowing that the sell pile was designated for a garage sale. That garage sale is Labor Day weekend and I spent this last week working on pricing and going through everything again. I kept only a couple items truly small useable items and it gave me huge confidence that I’m ready to get this stuff gone. And I know that I’m going to do the same with my keep boxes - declutter again. So I think 3 rounds is a minimum as well. Much to my surprise I’m actually reducing by maybe 75%. Having so much excess is a combination of being the last out of a large house owned by my parents who lived through depression and were the recipients of stuff from their siblings estates that no one else knew what to do with. There’s been spells of I will buy anything I touch in my life which hasn’t helped either. Now I’m old enough to look at something and say there’s not enough year’s left in my life to read that book, knit that yarn, make that quilt or take up canning. It’s very freeing.

I have a bedroom in my daughter's house which is 12 x 15 feet. I have a 5-drawer dresser, a double bed, a nightstand, a bookcase, and a desk. I go through my winter clothes in the fall and summer things in the spring and donate to Goodwill anything I haven't worn in the season I am cleaning out. I get all my books from Goodwill and donate them back once I have read them. I also clean out my desk drawers twice a year. The bookcase holds all my decor items. If something new doesn't fit, I have to find something I have in there that I am ready to donate. I do not hoard and living in one room, you just can't hold on to a bunch of stuff, which I never have done anyway when I had my own place. Keep up the good work. Will make a big difference in your lives! Clutter-free is the way to go!

I’m almost forty and I only allowed myself one bag per decade of my life of memoir items… but after moving a lot and some other life events happening, I’ve changed bag to shoe box, and try and declutter those once a year, just to make sure I still love everything I those boxes and they still bring me joy and not anxiety. But I really loved your holiday item declutter idea, why not make it easier on yourself, and just do it on the holidays when you’re already going through that stuff. As a niece of a librarian, it pains me to see books being stored away… my aunt would say “ who could read them in a box”. I myself keep the books I love to read (or read multiple times) and donate the rest, in my city every two blocks or so there are little free libraries people have set up in their yards where you can take a book or leave a book. So every quarter or so I go through my book stacks and sort them, going to read, loved to read again, and meh. And then just spread them out all over in the little free libraries.

The scrap books made me giggle. Takes a whole lot more effort than just “like” on an Instagram. 😅 I jumped on the 2020 declutter wagon. I did several rounds of declutter. We recently moved and “do I like this enough to tote it up 3 flights of stairs?’ Is a good motivator. :) Great job! I appreciate you not bullying people into letting go but letting them warm up to the idea.

Here's what I've done to help myself get rid of holiday decor( my weakness). First, I take the boxes out a month ahead to see what I have, to stop myself from buying more. It is so easy to buy stuff when it starts appearing in the stores! If I see what I already have, I can then plan what I want to use. After the holiday, I only repack what I actually did use that year. Anything I didn't use goes to charity. I am now down to one small storage box per holiday, or season, and they fit nicely in a bedroom closet. For me, that is huge! I used to have 8 big totes full of just holiday stuff that was taking up garage space!

So satisfying seeing the storage room now. It took me two rounds to get my small home decluttered, however I found that it is now a constant process of tweaking now. I am still finding stuff to dispose of and would highly recommend doing a run through about six months after the initial declutter. By that time you can really see what you have and have not been using, and you have also built up your decluttering muscles (mental and physical).
@noemisolano47482 жыл бұрын
fianorian I agree with you, after you declutter you always find something that can be donated, tossed or shred papers. All of 2021 I was decluttering only my things. Took me awhile because I work full time so I only have Saturday and Sunday to look at my things in my home to see what can go. I donated tons of stuff and shredded lots of my papers. So now I too am tweaking and finding stuff that can go. I now see the labor of my work decluttering because I have less things. But I keep up with the shredding because junk mail keeps coming, lol 😂. I only buy clothing that I need. This way I won't have so many clothes.

This Summer my husband and I have gone to 5-6 estate sales. It has been an eye opening revelation! I have seen what people have helded onto, stored, hoarded and collected for many years but when it comes right down to it, we can not take it with us and other people do not see the value or care less about your collection of dishes, crystal , owls, mushrooms, outdated furniture, old books, trinkets and decorations. I would love to have half of what people in just the United States spend each year just storing their junk! Things they have not seen or touch probably in years but yet will not let go of it. It keeps us prisoners to "things" that after we take our last breath meaning pretty much nothing to our family, children or even strangers who walk through our homes at our "estate sale" I love how you do not push people to let go of their things but I wish they could see it through someone else's eyes! You do a great job and are such a gracious young woman.

I've been consistently decluttering for a few years now and I don't even have that much stuff but each time, there's more stuff that I'm ready to let go. Also pushing back really hard against gift-giving from folks unless it's truly needed (for example, we used to literally get a trunk full of random stuff that relatives would give to us every year at holidays that we didn't want or need so instead now we focus on creating lists or for our more creatively inclined folks- they make us one or two items that we love instead).
@SpaceMakerMethod2 жыл бұрын
OMG... you really hit on something important about gift giving. I was thinking of making a video about that in December. Gifts, as sweet and generous as they can be sometimes can really add to the clutter and stress we already have. Glad you found a balance with that.
@ds76752 жыл бұрын
I was a bit disappointed the video was about the storage room again but once the owner started going through her elephant collection I was happy. I so wish she’d kept the two green elephants but I get it’s her stuff and she felt comfortable enough to let them go and just kept the larger one. I hope someday she finds a spot to keep the collection out, too. And how lucky are they to be in an apartment where there is an extra storage room to house items one doesn’t need on a daily basis. They should be proud about going through everything a second time and still managing to donate or pitch many items. Kudos!

Yesterday I went to my cousins to start working on a room in her home where everything she didn't know what to do with had been shoved. I focused on cleaning out the contents of a window storage bench. We pushed through just for that one thing. She has to post items on her Local Buy Nothing group to clear out what was decided. The elephant collection: next time you get it out have white tissue or unprinted newspaper on hand for rewrapping. Colored newspaper in damp climates will transfer permanent color onto collection. I’ve seen it happen and it really wouldn’t take long after a hurricane with accompanying electric outage for even storage unit to get damp. Something non-collectors can’t relate to is the fun it brings us to go through a collection while cleaning. It’s a relaxing break from all the cleaning work if nothing else. If it fits in a tote or two what harm does it do? And who knows down the road there might be a perfect spot to rotate displaying one or two small ones. Like the big one on balcony.

Ugh I’m a minimalist also and have a diagnosed hoarder 2 yards over. He’s in his 60s and grew up in the house and when his parents died he kept all their stuff so he’s not going anywhere. After a year I couldn’t take it, plus he sunbathes in his undies so I spent 3 grand on a 6ft wood fence. Maybe you can get some of the reed/bamboo fencing rolls from a home improvement store to help block it out?

So many times 😹 First when downsizing, then moving from Ottawa to Vancouver, and then again after moving within Vancouver. Biggest change, and related space benefit, was reducing the number of physical books from 34 boxes to 3 and then (during Covid) replacing my keeper books with a ebook - if it existed in a Canadian format. I did spend extra money on buying an e-version but it was so worth it to no longer need three full-height bookcases! Both Ottawa and Vancouver public libraries accept books - as well as CDs, and DVDs/Blue-ray - donations.

Was thinking - can the guest bedding be stored in a couple of the suitcases? With some kind of wicking bag to prevent mold? I'm just at the beginning of this video. I'm looking forward to seeing what is accomplished. Such great teamwork, planning & flexibility to find the solution! I'm binge watching this series. Every time I get up to get something, I take a box or bag and re-situate a bunch of stuff that needs more taming. If I can pick it up and move it, so much the better. I remembered from before my recent (COVID-INFESTED!) plane trip, I had collected a large box lid's worth of travel stuff (not all of which went with me!). Now that I have a small suitcase still on my bed, I am going to pack up the travel stuff and put it in the suitcase for my next trip (February 2025, if all goes well!). I'm getting so inspired by this focused five-day declutter effort. April, you are the Energizer Bunny!!! Amazing. Great job, Miami Couple & Kitties! So dedicated and focused! So happy (and somewhat jealous!😅) to see the progress!!! Unfortunately, decluttering will take the rest of my life, and then some. I have become the holder of possessions from deceased family members (Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma, my younger sister, my ex-husband and his Mom, even a few tokens from my Dad), and can't bring myself to thinning out these things. My husband calls these items "shrines", and reminds me that I have also my own personal clutter to deal with before it becomes a "shrine" too--if not, my son will just throw it all into the dumpster! What I have always seen as a responsibility of love🧡is becoming such a burden as I get older.

@@mimishimaineko1173 Some people take a picture, and toss the item. You could put everything in for a group picture, (or individual) and it make a digital family history album. Under the pic. you can write a line about whose item it is and why it’s important/ what it reminds you of. E.g. grandpa’s favorite recliner. Your whole family can access it on google docs and can reminisce on the memories and have it for everyone to add to or be the “keeper” of. This way no single person is burdened with storing the actual item, but the most important ones can be remembered or added by anyone.

You aren’t alone. I’m the oldest child and inherited a lot of my parents & grandparents and great aunts things over the years. It is hard for me to part with some of it. I use what I can and I have been slowly working on decluttering over the past couple years. It is very hard!!! I’m a very sentimental person.

I'm already a minimalist in 80% of my life at the very least but watching such series and feeling the hell that is chronic clutter (which is what i initially started with) really makes me want to become one of those people who own like a backpack of things and like live in a yurt or something... like full on spartan monk level 😂 i really dont think humans were meant to own much individually at all and what we need shouldve always been like the groups/tribes/communitys closest i can think of today would be hutterite/amish communities... not having to worry about all the basics of life and only really own your personal devices/sentimental things would be do freeing.

Whenever I am having difficulty with letting an item go to a donation charity, I think if a friend needed it, would I be happy to give it to them? The answer is always yes, so I think of donating something as giving it to a friend I haven’t met.

What a wonderful approach! I have quite a few things ready to go to such a friend with a younger kid soon. This is good motivation to go through them sooner rather than later, so they can help someone.

Just a little idea for manuals and warranties(because I just saw a random box with them mix upped with other stuff): i just keep the pages in my language and write the appliance, month and year of buying and the date when warranty ends in the top corner. Everytime I add (or need) something I declutter the whole pile. It seems like a little space safing but it is stuff that really can get out of control. I organize them in my file box in just one big hanging folder. Newest to the back. It is not even a minute to declutter and it isn't hard that way. And because I also wrote down the appliance I don't have to search on the front page. Sometimes it can be really hard to identify what this kind of paper is for.

Regarding properly disposing of every item: it's commendable of them to be so consciousnesses of how they remove items from their lives, but at some point people need to understand that if you're really trying to declutter, getting rid of things however you can, in that moment might be more important than holding onto trash, waiting for the right way to dispose of every little thing. At some point, that becomes a sublevel of hoarding in and of itself. Also, please keep in mind that huge corporations are the real polluters of our planet, and individuals have very little impact on our environment. ❤️

I used to think that also, but then I realized that our thoughts are energy, and energy either adds or subtracts to our reality.

Decluttering is not a one (or 3) and done thing. Its a constant for us...we have to go through and decide what can stay every 6 months or so. Its crazy the things that we can get rid of twice a year...

One thing that IRKS me is the store labels left on bins
@ellenhawkins1282 жыл бұрын
I like to remove the store/brand labels, but sometimes they are put on with an adhesive that won’t let the label tear off cleanly. Don’t the manufacturers know the labels need to be removed after purchase?

My husband and I do not store a lot of stuff in the attic. I just don’t want my children to have to clean it out.

I am currently in limbo. Almost all of my stuff is in a storage unit, and I have been decluttering boxes I have in my house. (My house is in limbo too. After a renovation gone horribly wrong), and I am planning on going through the storage unit when the temps here drops below swelter. I usually make 2 or 3 passes but it’s more difficult because I’m not sure if I’m going to try and salvage the reno, or let it go and start all over.

I'm sorry to hear that Bev. Hope things start going better with the reno soon.

I've been decluttering and trying to be a minimalist since 2015. I still haven't gotten to a place that feels done. I'm mostly hung up on "useful" junk and sentimental items...

3 rounds of decluttering prior to our out-of-state downsize, and 2 more since then. Unfortunately we still have things in a storage unit in former home town waiting for our son to load and bring to us later this fall. And I m sure there will be more to get rid of once it arrives. We had less than a month to decide on what we thought we (hubby) wanted to keep prior to our December closing date. Now that we have been here for 8 months he is finally realizing there is NO ROOM for a lot of what is yet to come, so will probably be given to son as he lost everything in a house fire in late February!

I can’t imagine asking someone to clean up a mess I created. That being said, if you do, at least be present and available to assist most of the time. You wouldn’t take a few days off and/or make this a priority? You act like the husband taking time to make decisions is doing you a favor. Tells me exactly why they are in this predicament!

I had gone thru most things in my house 3 times (we are in a shoulder season-one child has flown the coop, one is about to) .....Then we had the house fire and had to demolish our house. Very effective in getting rid of all but the most necessary (and salvageable) items, but rather stressful.....Not a method I recommend.
