Super Mario Bros. Wonder is EXACTLY What 2D Mario Needs

Nintendo revealed Super Mario Bros. Wonder in their direct yesterday, showing a strong first impression between it's art style, character roster including Daisy, levels and the Wonder Flower! I know it might be too early for some people to be convinced. But I think this game is already better than every NSMB game. The artsyle, character, roster, level design, and music are already better than all the NSMB games. I think there's a big chance that this game is better than SMB3 and SMW.

@@LegoReader12345hello Well be has 2 whole series to himself, Wario doesn't really need to be in a main Mario game like that. Don't get me wrong, it'd be COOL just not something the character needs to not feel like Nintendo is a little allergic to him, like Daisy was for so long. Waluigi is a weird one though, cause unlike Daisy he was made just to be a sports roster guy. I like him but... I don't think he's gonna ever get that promotion. Also cause he's tied to Wario too heavily who I've already said why he doesn't need to be in a Mario platformer. Waluigi would be right at home in a Wario Ware though, aside from that one gag in Gold, idk they keep him away from there.

Land 2 already did that. Land had some actually interesting enemies like the zombie dolls (forgot their name), the sphinxes that spit fire, and Yurarin (the jumping seahorses). I could definitely see some of them making a comeback, and it would be way more satisfying than just shoving one character from the game in there again.

Yoshi is probably this game's Easy Mode character. Which is so brilliant. His ability to flutter jump, and likely less traction on ice, is perfect for an easy mode character without it just being a Nabbit who is immune to all damage. But the fact anyone else can come and than mount the Yoshi, means if the level is too challenging for the Yoshi player the more experienced player can take over in most natural way possible, while also being fun for the more experienced player since they get to use Yoshi. Which would explain why there's multiple yoshi colors playable but seemingly not Toads, it's a way for every player to be the easy mode character.

SMB Wonder is what I was hoping a new 2D Mario game would be, very excited for this and Sonic Superstars. I'm so blown away that Daisy and Yoshi are playable characters, hopefully this will mean Wario and Waluigi will finally get their turn someday.

I don’t think this is really the same 2D Mario that is the next after SMB3, SMW and the NSMB series, it’s more of exploring a new genre of 2D Mario which is more stylised, open and indie like with the wonder seed and elephant mario being non-traditional elements.

it almost reminds me of nsmbds. that game added a bunch of new weird interesting enemies that just never showed up in the next 3 for no reason. snailicorn and the ravens come to mind; then theres like those weird lipped bobombs and the pumpkin goombas. itd be neat if those returned but im happy to see a bunch of new enemies

⁠@@ViIvaNunner Crowbers appeared in Wii, 2, and The Origami King. They were also a scrapped feature from U. Also, excluding 2, I’d say the other New games did a decent job at introducing new enemies. Wii gave us ice bros and scaredy rats, two current series staples. The Bramballs and jellybeams that debuted in that game even made a small appearance in the movie. And, several other enemies from both games I didn’t even mention, like eep cheeps, waddlewings, foos, flipruses, several piranha plant variants, etc. If you want to count them, Wii also had those flying green stingrays. So, in comparison to modern Mario RPGs, or even Odyssey to some extent, the New games did a much better job at adding new, memorable enemies than you’re describing. Although, this trailer alone does seem to imply Wonder will be adding even more original enemies than the New series combined.

That really cool that Super Mario Wonder is taking some aspects of Mario 3D World with the hub world with the levels popping up and requiring you to get a certain amount of the wonder seeds to progress with the game while playing like a normal 2D Mario. The game looks amazing so far also Daisy finally having a big role in a mainline Mario game since her debut good for Daisy fans! Now if they only finally get Waluigi in a mainline Mario or Wario game everyone would be happy!

This and the last 2 mainline mario games that came after Odyssey ( Maker 2, Bowser Fury) have had different plots that don't involve peach getting kidnapped. Along with the movie, the statement Miyamoto said about peach recently and the new peach game, I wonder if this means that the mario series will finally stop having peach be the main goal and change things up with its story even if just a little.

Yeap and not only that future projects will involve Peach not getting kidnapped either since she will be getting her own game as well. Even Super Mario RPG she was also involve and even though she was kidnapped in that game, she wasn't the main goal of the game. Still Nintendo could had done something creative with the whole kidnapping/rescue thing like what Sega did in Sonic Advance 2 where if you rescue a character then that character would become a playable character afterwards. The only time they kinda did that was in Super Mario 64 DS.

One thing I did notice when I first watched the trailer was that there's no timer! It might just be a me thing, but I never really liked that there was some weird idea that you had to beat the level before the bloated time limit eventually got to zero. It was less of a way to rush you, and more of a way to prevent you from experimenting and spending too much time on a level, and I'm glad it's gone/hope it stays gone. Back in the day, I used to play a lot of Super Mario Advance, which was a GBA version of Super Mario Bros. 2. For those of you who didn't play that game or the original version, that game had no timer, so you could hang around on levels and take as much time as you needed to complete them. Personally I loved running around in the sand levels where you could dig up the sand and make patterns with it, even if that wasn't what was intended. A small change, but a welcome one among other things!

It's almost like they asked HAL to be involved in this one, it has SO much personality. It looks like a mixture of all the good bits from 2D mario, Kirby's charm and sense of wonder, and DKCR's uniqueness, with a touch of Rayman vibes. It pulls from so many things yet still manages to feel like Mario. As a 2D platformer fan who grew up on Mario, I am feasting!

This style reminds me of the 2D Rayman games, Rayman Legends is up there with the Pinnacle of 2D Platformers for me, with Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze and Metroid Dread. I can’t wait!

So this is my guess but... the Flower Kingdom will be Daisy's Kingdom, (Sarasaraland is going to get a rebranding). The NPC at the end of the level giving a wonder seed looks like he has a flower bud on his head. The Caterpillar with the Crown will be related to Daisy somehow, I'm hoping that he was transformed into a caterpillar buy some curse from Bowser.

I don't think they will be adding Sarasaland into this game. Plus it not about Daisy!! The caterpillar is the ruler of the flower kingdom since we saw him wearing a Crown, my theory is he came down to the mushroom kingdom and ask for help for Mario and his friends, Have y'all noticed that Bowsers ship eyes have been brainwashed or something and the way how Bowser Jr. Looks different, i don't think Bowser is the main villain here. It must be a new Villain who controlled them. 👀

With the the Flower Kingdom having ties to Daisy, and potentially new bosses besides the Koopalings, imagine if they brought back Tatanga from Super Mario Land, since he once kidnapped Daisy in that game! Wow you bring up a good point with the level selection bit it does seem like were going to have more freedom as to which level we go to with the wonder seeds being a type of unlock key for each world and it does seem like there leaning towards more exploration since they got rid of the time limit

My gpd the references on the artstyle for the new Mario Wonder is lost on every western gamer... it is supposed to resemble Yoichi Kotabe artstyle for Mario very closely. Think the Mario we see in the instruction booklets of older Mario games (hence why some animations are straight references to what we used to see on the manuals). This is the most inspired 2D Mario has ever been since Super Mario World/Yoshi's Island on the SNES, almost 30 years ago. New Super Mario Bros was good, but never ambitious, always safe. This is whacky, trippy, daring 2D Mario. Give me more of this, "Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy" tripped out artstyle.

Something a bit interesting about the purple coins is that they only gain the decimal point while the wonder flower is active, I wonder if they get rounded when the effect goes away?

The fact that it's not another New Super Mario Bros game is exciting enough. Anybody says that the NSMB games aren't copy and paste haven't played the previous 2D Mario games. My one hope is that this game isn't too easy.

This seems very early to say....but I'm gonna say it anyways. This might be the best 2D Mario game ever. Literally everything about it hits that sweet spot I have for this series. It just stands out so much. And FINALLY, Daisy isn't locked to Spin-Off Hell. Let's just hope this game doesn't pull a Mario 2 USA on us

You know what's cool about these animations? The more I look at them, the more they look like proper evolutions of his animations from SMB3. The way he runs with his arms out in a wing position and jumps in that star formation, etc.

I'm actually kinda excited for a new 2D Mario for a change. Not to say I dislike the 2D games, I have mountains of respect for the first 6 2D titles for shaping how the franchise and the entire industry are today. It's a simple case where it's just, hey, I can enjoy them, but it doesn't quite peak my interest in the exact same way as the 3D games are for me. I grew up with the NSMB's series, and even then, I've never been the biggest fan of them for being stale imitations to try to recapture the old days and their lack of innovation that the previous 2D Mario's and most 3D Mario's do. But then here comes Wonder, which is looking to be the massive shake-up in creativity and evolution that 2D Mario has been desperately needing for almost 20 years. I'll definitely be giving this game an honest shot to see if its level of risk-taking and creativity can be on par with the 3D games.

It has Daisy playable and Yoshi as more than a powerup. That's literally all I needed to see to know that this is gonna be a game made with a ton of creativity and love. That said I hope its sales don't suffer too much from being *that* late in the Switch era. I god damn HOPE it surpasses New Soup U, because from the trailer alone it already deserves those sales far more.

I knew the Super Mario Movie would end up having an effect on the games. You can't give Mario more expression and emotion than he's ever had in all games combined, and then hope to just take it back. It looks like they're having to step up, with the characterization, now that Mario and Luigi stand to be seen as Chris Pratt and Charlie Day. Also, they finally added Daisy, because, you KNOW she's gonna have to show up in either the second or third movie.

I'm super hyped for this game, it looks amazing. One thing I'm a bit worried about is level quantity. It doesn't look like there are that many levels. At 16:45, you can see the beginning of the entire world. If you look closely, you can see that there are only three levels in the first area. THREE. I think after that, you go straight to the desert.

I like how it seems almost like they took from the spiderverse style of animation we’ve been seeing with movies blending 2d and 3d, playing with frame rates, contrast between the back and foreground’s styles, and just uniquenedd as a whole. i love this direction so much.

I really wish people would recognise that 3D World was the most recent 2D game. Yes obviously it's 3D, but the mechanics are identical to the 2D games. So, for me, it really has to beat that level of creativity with the levels, as opposed to beating New Supe (which is already hard).

@@R1IY2N The actual definition of the 2D games isn't the way the game is programmed (New Supe and Wonder are both 3D games). It's the way the game is structured: levels with a flagpole at the end, each with a unique gimmick, mechanics based on interacting with the level and power-ups, rather than Mario having a broad set of moves. The 2D games also have power up mushrooms instead of the life meter, all the multiplayer games are 2D, only 2D games appear in Mario Maker, etc. etc.

To make it short, it's so nice and refreshing to have a 2D Mario game that isn't just another addition to the "New" series. And I still can't get over the fact that Daisy is finally playable in an mainline game! Aside from the worlds, the level design, the Wonder Flower, the characters, and the apparent new bosses, the thing I love most of this game already is the art style. It feels like a new evolution of the 2D titles while still feeling like Mario! All in all, I'm still very hyped for this new Mario adventure (a little more than I am right now for Sonic Superstars), and I'm excited just *wondering* what will come next!
