Today we are showing you how to make a natural, cold process Goat's Milk salt bar which we will be scenting with a blend of fresh, citrus essential oils.
Goats milk soap making and salt bar soap making are both intermediate soap making techniques that can be slightly more complicated than making a regular cold process soap, but we are doing our best to make our recipe and creation process easy for you to follow at home.
In this video we explain and demonstrate how to make a salt bar soap with Goats milk and we talk through the individual ingredients and show how our recipe looks on soap calc. We cover steps such as how to incorporate your Goat's milk into your lye and how to make sure it does not scorch and we also talk about how to adjust your superfat levels to ensure that the final soap is not drying on the skin - an important point when creating salt bar soaps as they are generally made with a high amount of coconut oil.
We show you our blend of essential oils which we are using to scent our soap. This week, we have chosen to use Bergamot, Lime and Cedarwood Atlas essential oils and they give the finished soap a really fresh, clean scent, almost spa like!
Lastly we address how and when to slice a salt bar loaf into bars, as salt bars need to be cut quickly or they become too firm to cut. We also cover making salt bars in individual cavity moulds to avoid the need for cutting.
If you do wish to recreate our Goats Milk salt bar at home, here is the recipe that we created and feature in this video:
Note that when working out how much essential oil you can safely use in this recipe, you include the weight of the sea salt in the calculations too.
Sodium Hydroxide 167.2g
Water 167.2g
Goats Milk 167.2g
Coconut oil 990g
Apricot Kernel Oil 110g
Fine Sea Salt 550g
Lime (Distilled) Essential Oil 15g
Bergamot Essential Oil (Bergaptene Free) 15g
Cedarwood Atlas Essential Oil 15g
Himalayan Pink Sea Salt (Optional) 20g

And that's why I have three stick blenders. using two as one for standby one fot active use. The 3rd is there for that emergency use if the other two fail.

Haha, love it. I have two stick blenders, AND now two temperature guns. I drop mine on the floor recently, the batteries in it went flying, and I wasn’t sure how accurate it was when putting it back together. I was a bIt lost in the middle of making soap as to where the temperature degrees was at, so have bought a spare. As they both are essential to the soap making process. So, good on you.

I'm planning on making a salt bar with goat milk but I'll be using the milk in oil method as I don't want to use frozen milk. I made a box for my loaf mold like that to prevent the bowing. Thanks for sharing this video. The visual is exactly what I needed.

Love the addition of goat milk to the salt bar. Beautiful looking soap and presentation. Interesting to hear about the distilled version of lime and the change in Bergamot essential oils making a difference. I use both EO and will look for that over here in Aus in future

Thank you :-) Yes, it is strange how the extraction method of the essential oil can change it from being phototoxic to not. I have never thought to research about why this actually is, but now I want to!

Lovely recipe, thank you so much for your video, tutorial, and very open generous sharing. I love your company and your soap work, and the fact that you are in the UK like me. I feel that you and Wayne are my friends. Gonna definitely try this soap bar in the next few days. Been thinking of salt bar making literally over the last few days. I made a pink clay salt bar about 6 months ago, my first. I thought that I didn’t like it as it was so hard that I thought that it wouldn’t lather. I started using it 2 weeks ago - and oh my goodness - it’s hard and long lasting in the shower, bubbly and gently cleansing. Bless ya my Sussex friends!

Thank you for such a lovely comment :-) It's so nice to hear that our viewers think of us as friends as that is exactly how we like to be seen. Yes, salt bars are so hard, but they do create such a beautiful lather. They are our bars of choice when it comes to our own sinks and we currently have one of our lavender ones on the go!

Did they keep their color after a week or so? Mine always starts off a cream color and after a few weeks it darkens dramatically.

Your soap is natural and beautiful ...I'm always enjoying your videos ^^ I wonder how to dry salt soap..just leave it at room temperature??
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany Жыл бұрын
Thank you :-) Yes, we cure (dry) our salt soaps at room temperature. We do find they can sweat in high humidity, so we do sometimes cure them in a room with a dehumidifier running if we find they are starting to sweat.

Do you make an avocado soap that is skin friendly? I've found avocado oil quite stinky but haven't used it in a soap just skin balms for myself. I wondered if it acts differently in soap? Thank you

The only soap we include Avocado Oil in is one of our salt bars and then it is only at 10%. We are going to be experimenting with different oils and butters over the coming months though, so I will add Avocado to our "must try" list!

I wonder if this bar would work with 10% avacado oil, 10% castor oil, 80% coconut oil, and coconut milk instead of goats milk?
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany Жыл бұрын
You could certainly give it a go, though you would need to run the changes through soap calc as the required lye amount may change :-) Coconut Milk should be fine to use instead of Goats Milk.
