Birmingham resident here for 12 years, lived in Alabama my entire life. Full time uber driver, so im up and down these streets every day and night. This video is not accurate at all of the overview of the city. Does Bham have some rough neighborhoods? Of course, I drive through them everyday. Does Bham have its problems, absolutely. But what city doesn't. Most locals here are descent people and just trying to get by like everybody else. What this video is showing is only a small group of mislead young people. Birmingham has tons of beauty and history. Don't let this video distort your view of the city. Just mind your business and you'll be fine.

@ as a parent myself I can honestly tell you that sometimes it doesn’t matter one bit what’s taught at home. The peer pressure and outside influence sometimes win. Studies show that after 14-15 kids learn more from peers than anyone else. Many great parents out there whose kids have unfortunately taken the wrong path. If you have the ability to move out the trenches to raise your kids chances of succeeding in life then you should.

He definitely hit a nail on the head, but a lot of their parents probably didn't necessarily want to raise children in an area like that. I'm from right up I-65 from these two places; in Montgomery. I didn't have a rough upbringing like many in this video, but I've been in some of these same environments as in this video. This will be long but I'm hoping some of the young men in this video or others living like them might see this comment. And a 5-minute read might give you a new perspective. Many of the guys I grew up with who gravitated towards the streets weren't bad guys, but they got caught up in that era. Most were able to turn it around before they got in too deep. Some are still locked up for things they did in the early 2000's. And some lost their lives in the street, and they were some of the most feared guys around. But the craziest thing about it is hardly anyone is repping what they did 20 years ago the same way. So, all of that that seems so important now fades away as you get older. It is true some people chose to be foolish and are just evil people. But I understand the systematic effects of many born into these environments. From Roger Wiliams (one of the areas in this video) or Birdville in the Mobile area to Tulane Court or Smiley Court in Montgomery to Gate City or Kingston in Birmingham, and many rural areas in between in Alabama; it's the same song. These are effects from the Jim Crow South. Many black people were able to beat the odds and get out of these environments. But not everybody made it out. I saw several of these places firsthand in the 90's and early 2000's. Some were worse than this. I know how drugs ravaged these communities. Some of the fathers were incarcerated for selling the drugs or strung out. Some lost their lives in this cycle. Some of the mothers were strung out. And some were parents who just worked so much, they couldn't monitor their kids as much. So, when I see these young men, I know some of you'll are the kids of those broken homes from that era. But what I will say is don't let your environment as a kid dictate your adult life. You can get certified in a trade in two years. You might say that's a long time but think about two years ago and how that flew by. If you want to go to a 4-year college and get a degree, go for it. I got mine. It's many areas you can choose to study. You can go to the military. You can make a KZbin channel. It can be about comic books, movie reviews, sneakers etc. You can do comedy. You cand get a CDL and travel the country. You can be an actor. Point is you have options. Your friends should understand if you want a better life and if they don't, they're not your friends. If you have to get in your car and leave the city; do it. If you don't have a car, get a bus ticket and get out of town. No one will know you in the new place so you can relax and focus more. Give yourself and/or your kids a better life than you had as a kid. The tongue is powerful. When you invite beef and disrespect, that's what comes your way. And when they come, they are not going to wait until you are outside holding your gun with 20 of your boys with you. They are going to sneak you when you are by yourself. Do you think at that moment you are going to be ready to go out like a solider? That sounds good but the reality is you will likely be trying to get away and wishing you could be doing some of the things I mentioned earlier. Not saying you can't protect yourself but put your trust in God more than in guns and the street. And go find the good things in life. It's way more out there.

I think all of the projects in Mobile County are either torn down, or boarded up waiting demolition. They were concrete and well built , and should have stayed open because it provided housing to many folks in need. Now many are homeless, or near homeless, and that makes the crime and poverty worse. I lived in Mobile for some years, and glad I left when I did. To many young kids running around with guns 10 years ago, I am sure it is much worse now.

As an Elder in the African American community though I Love my People this lifestyle and it's acceptance as normal is disheartening, disappointing and embarrassing at the least. One problem is not many talk openly about how this lifestyle is bad. Musicians and entertainers glorify the lifestyle. If a white person talks bad about it, they are called racist. If a black person talks bad about it, they are labeled an uncle tom. I don't think may of These people would listen to an older white man, tbh, so I think somebody from their community that they respect needs to come out and not only talk about it but show them how to get out and why the path is wrong. But the local politicians don't want to lose votes, so they don't speak out on the behavior in their community by their own. Entertainers and musicians don't want to lose credibility. I have seen some ministers talk about it, but that's about it. It seems like we have created an environment where no one can have a real conversation, at least both ways. The people in this video can say whatever they want, but the only thing they want to hear in return is that they are a victim, and they have to live this way, and it's ok. The culture has to change before anything can change.

I guess it’s because we live in these communities and we’ve grown kinda numb to some of this, but as long as you don’t go over there with them, or deal with them, you’ll be fine. It’s not as bad as the media make it out to be, but it is the main focus of how other races view us as people. That’s what’s unfair.

@davidmoultry8275Ай бұрын
Man, my heart breaks for these guys. I once thought like they think. I grew up in Birmingham, on the south side as kid and the west side as a teenager. My mother is a strong one and she did a terrific job of handing us the tools she was handed and more. Things shifted when we moved to the west side. No father figure in the home, the gangstas and drug dealers became my father. I went from just hanging out to becoming desensitized to violence and death, along with drug abuse at a young age. I became a monster. As I watch the video, I can see the longing to be loved and the pain. Love will be found one way or another. The environment will suck you in if you don’t have a solid supporting cast. I strongly feel that a man of character and integrity is needed in the home. I’ve been confined to a wheelchair for 23 years now after suffering a gunshot wound through the neck. The offender was a guy I hung-out with. No beef however, he’s been forgiven! The church offered me everything and more. God was the Father I never had but always had. I’ve been to the juvenile detention center- county jail- tons of events, with the hope of someone life being changed through an experience with the Savior. I now manage a customer service department and work a part-time job. God has a way of making us wise if we make room for Him in our lives. These young men need to know that He loves them and that they are created in His image. May God bless them and perhaps use me as a vessel to touch some of them.

As someone from Huntsville Alabama, Birminghams "next door neighbor" if u will... Alabama as a whole, is not necessarily places like Chicago and NY in terms of HAVING TO be in the streets. Because you genuinely have no other option just because those places are fucking huge.. here you two options. Right (minding your business, and handling yours), OR Left(swerving into some shit that doesn't even make sense to the mugs suffering and dying as a result). I could literally write a book, probably. But ill leave it at that my friend's.. Ill say this to end it all.. i chose option one, after years of destroying myself doing the other one.. gid bless 🙏💯

As a person that loves America and loves Americans, this hurts to watch. You can look at ALL 50 states and see just how bad the streets are now. It used to be just the big cities but now it's small town USA. And it's not these kids fault, or the parents fault... It's the Federal Reserves fault, it's the fault of our elected officials, it's corporate greed. Our money has been inflated to the point it's almost worthless. Last I looked, the U.S. dollar was worth like $0.07 on the dollar. And with inflation, all the wealth in the states, counties, cities, and towns gets sucked up and taken. We are being robbed and stripped bare from the inside out. 90+% of the whole country looks like a bankrupt going out of business sale. These young kids/adults are stuck, even if they wanted to do something different and make clean money... There's nothing out there.
