Күн бұрын

Mr. Lawler serves as a national security consultant and is the Senior
Partner at MDO Group, which provides HUMINT training to the Intelligence
Community and the commercial sector focused on WMD, CI, technical and cyber
issues. Mr. Lawler is a noted speaker on the Insider Threat in government and
industry. Prior to this, Mr. Lawler served for 25 years as a CIA operations officer
in various international posts and as Chief of the Counterproliferation Division
Special Activities Unit. His overseas assignments include Bern (1982-1985),
Paris (1985-1989), Oslo (1989-1991), and Zurich (1991-1994).
Mr. Lawler was a member of CIA Senior Intelligence Service (SIS-
3) from 1998 until his retirement in 2005. He was a specialist in the recruitment
of foreign spies, and he spent well over half of his CIA career battling the
proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. As Chief of the A.Q. Khan Nuclear
Takedown Team, which resulted in the disruption of the most dangerous nuclear
weapons network in history, Mr. Lawler was the recipient of one of the Trailblazer Awards in 2007, marking the 60 th anniversary of CIA. In 2004, former
DCI George Tenet sent Mr. Lawler a note which stated, “Jim, what you and your
team have achieved will rank up there as one of the most spectacular intelligence
accomplishments in the history of the CIA. It occurred because of your exemplary
leadership. Not only are we in the process of taking down a network, we are also
in the process of disarming a country as a result of your fine work. With respect,
George J. Tenet” And former DDCI John McLaughlin noted that the effort was
“the closest thing I’ve ever seen to a perfect intelligence operation.”
Mr. Lawler also received the Director Award from DCI George
Tenet, the U.S. Intelligence Community HUMINT Collector of the Year Award,
and the Donovan Award from the CIA Deputy Director of Operations.
Prior to his career in intelligence, Mr. Lawler practiced law and was
the president of a steel components company in Texas. He is a graduate of Rice
University, Houston, Texas; and the University of Texas School of Law. He is
married to Ellen and has three children and seven grandsons. He has completed
two novels: “Living Lies,” an espionage story of the Iranian nuclear weapons
program, and “In the Twinkling of an Eye,” about recruiting a spy at the heart of a
devastating covert Russian-North Korean genetic bioweapons program. Both
have been cleared by the CIA’s Publication Review Board. “Living Lies” was
published in August 2021, and “In the Twinkling of an Eye” is to be published in
early 2022. He is currently writing his third espionage novel, “The Traitor’s Tale,”
which is about treachery and treason deep within the CIA.

Im a barber 43 years. I had a customer who was a retired diplomatic attaché all over the world. He said he always encouraged his political appointee bosses to treat his intelligence officers with generosity, love, dignity and respect lest they embarrass the boss by revenge flipping. (His words) Whatever that meant. It didnt sound good though.

Excellent interview. Guy seems like he was very talented and was good at what he did. He makes alot of good points. I would argue that it does not take a sociopath. Someone who is empathic and someone capable of multiple personalities does well. Theatrical actors can do this, to a point. He probably casted a wide net to recruit and handle his sources.

These episodes with spooks are problematic. To a person, they are professional liars. By definition! You actually can't take anything they say at face value. Their recounting of events is almost certainly skewed for either personal or other reasons. It really doesn't matter how emphatically they say "I'm out of the agency now so I can tell you the true story" or "that was me then, just acting in my role". Their version of events has no more validity than a Netflix fiction. I'm sure the special ops guys do something similar some of time but at least have some credibility. I wouldn't waste my time taking to them at the water cooler in an office nor watching them on line. I'll be happy to check back in for the recounting of combat by soldiers.
@gunbacker9428

Thats the case with anyone. Everyone on these podcasts are telling a story and stories get embellished. You can enjoy the conversation without taking it for 100% fact. Theyre based on true events and that's what's awesome.

Such a strange guy, how he speaks of the obvious like he just discovered something. Especially when talking about psychology. It's hard to listen to him, his abuse of trust and general inability to form a real bond with anyone but himself is repulsive.

I agree. The reason is that recognizing that something is obvious is different than truly intuiting it. There is a kind spiritual detachment/abnormality with people like this that was clearly picked up immediately by the agency. It is a good thing that he channeled this into a good cause (and I hope that is true.)
