I am still using my 10yr-old 2013 MacBook Pro 12hrs/day. Had new hard drive and battery installed a couple years ago but other than being stuck with Catalina, its still working great. My hard drive crashed when Apple tried to upgrade my OS to Big Sur without M2

I miss mine old MBP, those are such great machines! Had a mid-2012 and, as you mentioned, I also upgraded the HD and RAM (back when you could) and it was fantastic! Sadly, the graphics card died, and since it was part of the logic board, it basically killed the machine. Still on the fence for a new MBP as my PC laptop is working good enough...but Mac keyboards and track pads though 🤔

Great explanation. Yesterday I tested out the new MBP M2 Pro to emulate my actual daily workflow by opening Affinity designer, iMovie, Logic Pro, Safari with 10+ tabs, a chess game, and multiple finder windows. After some time of usage, I found that Affinity crashed constantly, which led me to think that I'll stick to my 15.4" MBP from 2018 for another 3 years at least because that pretty M2 Pro is more expensive than my Husqvarna Svartpilen 200. The good thing is that you won't have to carry [or forget] dongles anymore, unless you need a standard USB port.

Very helpful video thanks. Currently on a mid-2015 15.4" and bought an M1 16" last year but quickly returned as silicon not compatible with the version of Photoshop I was then running, coupled with the fact that I could no longer run my Virtual Box VM (essential to run an old film scanner which is Windows only). Now that I have new Photoshop, tempted to go with the M2 16" (screen perfect for photo work which is 90% of my use) but my uncertainty is over which flavour to go for. Will probably opt for base spec based on all you've said, except that I'll probably go 2TB or even 4TB as I'd love to get away from constantly having a tethered external drive carrying my photo library, travelling a lot as I do. Anyway, nicely presented vid!

Good vid, covered most of the topics of interest on the new machine. My daily is currently a 2014 15" rmbp. I loathe the port robbing that apple did. Glad they put back an hdmi and SD slot, but I only have 1 peripheral that's USB-C :( And the fact that VMWare/Parallels/Virtualbox can not emulate the x86 architecture on M1, so one of my use cases goes out the window... I'm still trying to justify the upgrade path and the $6k CDN price tag. In the meantime I've picked up a lightly loved Asus TUF laptop to see if pure linux will meet my needs.

Having had an m1 air 16gb since launch (which has been excellent!), workflow changes drove my requirements to a more powerful setup. I waited and waited for the m2 pro/max to come out toward the end of last year. I couldn’t wait any longer and picked up 2 m1 max 32gb (14 and 16) for me and one of my team at the end of December, £500 and £299 cheaper than msrp. Imagine my horror when the m2 pro and max got released! Then I saw the price in the UK and £749/25% more for 20 - 30% more performance thankfully didn’t seem worth it. If you can get m1 pro or max for substantially less than msrp then they are still well worth it. The price increase in the UK has left space for the m1 series as long as they remain in stock.

Just thinking about the different strategies with the cooling fans , i’d take a punt the fans coming on later on the m2 was needed to get the full hour of extra battery life over the previous model for marketing purposes.

what? No, it's like M1 vs M2: the M2 has better E-ccores, same goes for the M2 Pro/Max that have 2 extra E-cores Also the new M2 Max 16" is heavier due to an improved cooling system, so it will kick in later. Apple in generally prefers them to be quiet

Is there a difference in base frequency between the 16" M2 Max and all the other M2 models? Based on the GeekBench score reports, it appears there is, and they are 3.7 GHz and 3.5 GHz, respectively. And does high-power mode (which is specific to the M2 Max) have an effect?

Great video. I was interested to hear your 20201 m1 vs 2022 m2 discussion. I have a 2019 16" 2.4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9 with 32 GB memory. Could you render an opinion if I would really see a lot of improved performance with a 16 M2 with 16gb memory vs the pretty well spec'd out 2019 macpro I have new??. I really do like my 2019 and am trying to see if I want to make the jump to upgrade.

I am using a M! MacBook Pro base model and a M1 MacBook Air with 16GB ram and 512Gb SSD, they are both excellent machines, though I love the MacBook Airs thin and light size for traveling, The M1 Pros screen is much better, don't think I am going to upgrade u until the M3/M3 Pro/Max chips come out.

Hmmm, video exports aren't handled by the GPU, they're handled by the media encoders so wouldn't see the 30% improvement unless they were bottlenecked by seriously heavy adjustments (which the GPU handles).

currently using a 16" Macbook Pro with the M1 Pro / 32GB / 1TB storage. I'm mostly doing photo editing in Lr and Ps. This beast handles everything I throw at it. Maybe if I money wasn't an issue I would upgrade just because I like new tech, but for now I'm waiting for the m4 max (at least) to upgrade :))

I have zero interest in these M2 Max machines. My MacBook Pro has been flawless. That's the one thing that annoys me so much on Macrumors (a website I no longer visit) is people think Apple is selling "them", the ones who have the previous model and they keep complaining that it doesn't offer enough. Of course it doesn't because people shouldn't be upgrading year after year. To be clear I did in fact upgrade from my 2019 Intel 16" MacBook Pro i9 (for the obvious reasons) to my 16" M1 Max but I have never upgraded under 3 years. It's just insane.

4hrs difference in battery life between the 14 and 16inches is quite much. I love the portability of the 14inch version but the battery is a thing of concern

I have both and can say if you have a max chip they are way worse off but the 16” still lasts about an hour or two tops more.

Bigger screen makes more a difference than power jump up to M2 in the 14. If you don't need the size, travel a lot or have an external screen you can use too - then go with the 14.

07:00 - that’s a 20% speed increase, not 16%. The correct formula is ((old time)/(new time) - 1)*100%. By using your formula, if the M2 Max took 1 second to finish the workload, it would be just a 99.7% speed improvement, which is clearly incorrect

Good question - it won't. It will improve speeds between your Wifi 6 devices though (so long as you have a Wifi 6 router)

The price jump of the base model is because of the spec bump. the m1 14” with 10 core cup and 16 core gpu cost 2199 as well. The base model m1 14” had an 8core cpu

Mechanical/civil engineers also don't use macOS. Most graphic software only run on Windows.
