I don't usually leave a comment on videos like these. I just place a like and leave... But I loved and found amazing how you display all the information and differences between different standards, type of screens, etc. You go straight to the point, and the viewer can stop the video to see those details, and understand in more depth the advantages and disadvantages of every element! Super cool!

I compared a lot of these, but ultimately went for a LG 34WK95-U. Ultra-wide (21:9), 35 inches, 5120 x 2160, 450 nits peak brightness, 98% AdobeRGB, 5 ms reaction time, 8.8 kg. This is the sweet spot for me for video editing and photo editing. And the price is reasonable too.

I disagree about 4K monitors. There’s a reason why Apple monitors are either 5K or 6K. It has to do with 110 vs 220 ppi and 4K is a strange fractional upscaling and downscaling which can hurt performance since these scales are done via GPU especially when you’re already doing GPU intensive activities. I recommend 1440p over 4K to keep the math simple so the scaling won’t be too problematic.

Apparently Apple reserves Retina or HiDPI display scaling options for monitors with at least 4K resolution. I didn’t realise how bad the scaling was until I compared it to my pc and realised how beautiful the fonts were. Some have suggested using a workaround such as third party apps (e.g. better dummy) which I’ve tried but no success. Also seen suggestions to use a thunderbolt to DisplayPort cable but haven’t got round to buying one yet so not sure if this method works.

Last summer I got the LG 27” UP850 which is a 4K IPS monitor with HDR, 400nits and 95% DCI-P3 for a whisker under £400. It has UCB-C data and 96W power delivery plus a ton of other ports so I use it as a USB-C hub as well. Fantastic quality and superb value for money - is there anything that comes close? Only caveat is that it’s a power hungry beast by the time you have everything driven through it (44W up to 185W max).

Apple recently muddied the waters further by introducing their new-for-2022 Studio Display for $1,600 US. What I like about the Studio Display: VESA mount option, good image quality and color accuracy, ability to pivot to "portrait mode" for DTP work, 27" diagonal, Thunderbolt, solid design, 5K. What I hate about it: EX-PEN-SIVE! I'm wondering if there's an aftermarket display offers those features listed above for substantially less money.

Yes scaling does require additional processing power from both the cpu and GPU. Sme will say that it’s negligible. I however don’t have a crystal ball, and believe it’s best to minimize power draw wherever possible cuz ya never know. This appears to be the argument in favor of 1440pm, however I’d never be surprised to learn that Apple employs additional layers of scaling that I didn’t know about. My current understanding is that Mac product scales immediately just to present an image, and then rescales x number of times at 60x per second to adjust for screen resolution, ppi, and user settings.

I don't have a 2nd screen, my external monitor is my only screen for my good old mid 2012 MacBook Pro 13" since its screen went black in 2020. I know what the problem is, it's the back light but unfortunately there is no competent repair shop in my place to deal with the right circuit on the motherboard. As I have very little money in the bank, I tried 2nd hand monitors but most of them were VGA and as I have Thunderbolt 2 (no typing error here) I wanted HDMI... this and a great bargain at the time led me to the Philips 241E (100€) plugged with a cable Thunderbolt 2 to HDMI (13€). Probably not the best set up but it allows me to use my MacBook Pro and watch your video.

As someone that spends 90% of my time in a day in the MS Suite having no limitations on how many spreadsheets I can have up at a time; it is a godsend. The 49” size at only $999 with VRR and a TB to DP 1.4 cable to get the proper resolution/refresh has made it an amazing screen such that it’s my primary and I just keep my MBP closed while using the Apple Touchpad 2 and Magic Keyboard on the MacBook Pro 14.

I got myself the HP U28 4k usb c monitor. Good enough to charge the 16” MacBook Pro. I like it and it’s pretty cheap at £329

I have that Samsung M7 smart monitor for a PC, and it is excellent, and it gives 4K@60 screen. It is just like hooking up a smart TV but without antenna out. It has support for Tizen Apps, has 2 HDMI, USB-C with charging and video transfer (up to 65W) and additional USB ports for whatever you like. It natively supports RDP to your Windows machine if that's what you prefer (to go fully without cables). One thing that I would like to have is "premium" version of this monitor, with a much better brightness (it is about 300 nits I believe, so HDR although supported is not really a HDR) and possibly QLED technology. That would make it perfect. Kind regards.

My ideal monitor would be the 48" OLED. Won't mind the bigger ones either even if I would have to sit way farther. Bigger is ALWAYS better!

Thank you for the info! Very informative and helpful. Well, I like many were waiting for Apple to bring out the new and improved 27" iMac! Then the Mac Studio showed up. I like the studio and will most likely go with that but I can't see myself spending the money for the Studio display. I think Apple is nuts! It's really just an iMac screen without the computer! Really was hoping to find a great alternate for that display because I was really looking at getting two 27" monitors. I have been looking a lot at the Dell UltraSharp 27 4K USB-C Hub Monitor - U2723QE as well as the U2720Q, bu thought the newer model would be better. Would love to get your thoughts and suggestions on this and any others. Really just worried that I will have issues connecting to the studio with a monitor or monitors other than Apple's, worried screen text will need to be scaled, brightness, matte finish of the screen instead of glossy, etc? I have always just stuck with the iMac but the 24" is not what I want. Thank you!

how for the love of god you can say that 1080p 24inch works on mac as an external display? Ive just updated my laptop to a macbook pro m3 pro and was rocking a dual 24 inch displays on my previous windows machine and although the ppi was not great - it worked. With the new macbook i geniuenly get headaches using it for more than 30 minutes even with the betterdisplay app helping out.

With so much variations in screens people view content on, there isn't so much point in getting highly calibrated monitor, unless printing photos etc. But online content purely depends what the end user views it on

Thanks for you reviews, I was wondering what you think about this LG-32" 4K UltraFine 32UN880-B and if you think it would be any good for video editing and a bit of colour grading with FCPX or DaVinici resolve cheer, Jim
