I disagree about 4K monitors. There’s a reason why Apple monitors are either 5K or 6K. It has to do with 110 vs 220 ppi and 4K is a strange fractional upscaling and downscaling which can hurt performance since these scales are done via GPU especially when you’re already doing GPU intensive activities. I recommend 1440p over 4K to keep the math simple so the scaling won’t be too problematic.

Apparently Apple reserves Retina or HiDPI display scaling options for monitors with at least 4K resolution. I didn’t realise how bad the scaling was until I compared it to my pc and realised how beautiful the fonts were. Some have suggested using a workaround such as third party apps (e.g. better dummy) which I’ve tried but no success. Also seen suggestions to use a thunderbolt to DisplayPort cable but haven’t got round to buying one yet so not sure if this method works.

@Ed_Mann11 ай бұрын
Yes scaling does require additional processing power from both the cpu and GPU. Sme will say that it’s negligible. I however don’t have a crystal ball, and believe it’s best to minimize power draw wherever possible cuz ya never know. This appears to be the argument in favor of 1440pm, however I’d never be surprised to learn that Apple employs additional layers of scaling that I didn’t know about. My current understanding is that Mac product scales immediately just to present an image, and then rescales x number of times at 60x per second to adjust for screen resolution, ppi, and user settings.

As I have very little money in the bank, I tried 2nd hand monitors but most of them were VGA and as I have Thunderbolt 2 (no typing error here) I wanted HDMI... this and a great bargain at the time led me to the Philips 241E (100€) plugged with a cable Thunderbolt 2 to HDMI (13€). It natively supports RDP to your Windows machine if that's what you prefer (to go fully without cables). One thing that I would like to have is "premium" version of this monitor, with a much better brightness (it is about 300 nits I believe, so HDR although supported is not really a HDR) and possibly QLED technology. Really was hoping to find a great alternate for that display because I was really looking at getting two 27" monitors. I have been looking a lot at the Dell UltraSharp 27 4K USB-C Hub Monitor - U2723QE as well as the U2720Q, bu thought the newer model would be better. Would love to get your thoughts and suggestions on this and any others. Really just worried that I will have issues connecting to the studio with a monitor or monitors other than Apple's, worried screen text will need to be scaled, brightness, matte finish of the screen instead of glossy, etc? I have always just stuck with the iMac but the 24" is not what I want. Thank you!

how for the love of god you can say that 1080p 24inch works on mac as an external display? Ive just updated my laptop to a macbook pro m3 pro and was rocking a dual 24 inch displays on my previous windows machine and although the ppi was not great - it worked. With the new macbook i geniuenly get headaches using it for more than 30 minutes even with the betterdisplay app helping out.

Not suffered headaches or anything - would prefer 1440p every time though.

With so much variations in screens people view content on, there isn't so much point in getting highly calibrated monitor, unless printing photos etc. But online content purely depends what the end user views it on

Thanks for you reviews, I was wondering what you think about this LG-32" 4K UltraFine 32UN880-B and if you think it would be any good for video editing and a bit of colour grading with FCPX or DaVinici resolve cheer, Jim
