I was mostly disappointed by the Steam Deck's performance of even older AAA games and compability e.g. I got a big library of games on Epic but it's a pain to get them to run, XBox Gamepass likewise only works with workarounds. As I don't travel much, battery life isn't a big concern. So I would go for Rog Ally. Trying out a steam deck showed me that I don't really need a high powered mobile console but would rather stick to TV gaming.

I got mine at launch and I literally fell in love. The best thing are the console-like experience, the quick resume and the battery life. For my backlog of not too demanding games, is absolutely gorgeous. Even though I have a PS5 and a couple of PCs, i started playing regularly thanks to it.

@@TheFlagrantOne I think Deck can do even more, don't underestimate it. AAA games of last years work usually well. Modern not-demanding games, like last Prince of Persia Lost Crown, upcoming Little Nightmares 3 and so on, work super and they aren't exactly Indie. You can even stream your PS5 games with Chiaki (I am using for Alan Wake 2 in HDR). I think you wouldn't regret.

I recently bought the OLED steam deck and it really is an incredible piece of tech paired with steam OS. Unsupported games generally work and I ran my deck through a bunch of older PC ports around the 360/ps3 era with great results. Plays Yakuza and FromSoftware games with ease. Supports PS5 remote in HDR and can run Xbox game pass. I think this is the ultimate companion piece for gamers who have everything and an amazing console for the rest of us.

@Annoye The ROG ALLY doesn’t get hot, it’s very Silent, light weight and looks awesome, BATTERY LIFE IF you want 3-5 hours of Gaming the best performance at 30Watts on the ROG ALLY you can use a power bank which has 100W output with 30,000mAh. Or get 5 to 9 hours at 15watts with the same power-bank which still has better performance than The STEAM DECK. Was a Q1 Steam Deck LCD user, then I upgraded to the Limited Edition Steam Deck OLED and my usage has gone up like 1000%. The OLED is a masterclass in handhelds. Handhelds are meant to be easy to use, less fiddling required, and to last as long as possible before recharging. Having games like Tales of Arise, give me 5+ hours of gameplay before dying as well as 6+ on emulated games means its perfect for visits to the mechanic, airport/airplanes, trains, basically any sort of long commute. I swear by my Steam Deck and as cool as the others are and as powerful as they are, the Steam Deck community also just works so much harder to continuously make this handheld godlike.

For a proper apples to apples comparison you should've matched TDPs between deck and Ally as well. Sure you cab push the Ally to 25w but your battery is going to disappear in 40 mins. And that for me was the difference. The deck has similar performance to the Ally at 15w (better in some games worse in others) and way better battery life. This means that when traveling I can play over 4 hours of Witcher 3 or 6 hours of Vampire Survivors or Death Must Die.

I know from personal experience that the most important things for a handheld for my tastes are the battery life, ease of use, pick up and play nature, decent temps and fan noise, and portability. The Steam Deck was the best balance of attributes I care about. Plus, I really love OLED screens and try to avoid LCDs if I can.

I bought the Steam Deck OLED from the US. I live in India, but my wife traveled to the US for work, and she is bringing it. She is returning this weekend. So excited for the Steam Deck OLED. I was torn between the ROG Ally and Steam Deck OLED. I finally sided with the Steam Deck OLED due to ease of use that everyone is talking about, OLED screen, and terrific support that Steam is offering. However, I do like the ROG Ally for its more compact size, 1080p screen (which can come in handy when using Windows for other tasks), and 120Hz (again, while using Windows UI/apps). Maybe I will also buy the ROG Ally 2 when it comes out maybe in the next two years?

@@TRX25EX I feel that. Some games work great. Other's don't. See if I had an ROG Ally I'd also have 2 less Buttons on the back of my "Controller". In a game like Ace Combat 7 I got to be holding down my Thumbstick and also Be holding "Y" to Keep a Visual on my Target. So i physically cannot lift my Thumb up for even a milisecond to try and mash it (To change Targets) *AND* fire a missile with "B" at the same time. So I bound my MGs, and Missiles to the R4 and R5. It's small things like that. And I DO agree that the LCD deck DOES feel cheap. (Mine always Creaked when I squeezed the Right "Grip") but the OLED is Absolutely Fantastical. Also. The Track Pads are ESSENTIALLY now to me anymore because I've grown super accustomed to Typeing like that now. AND I can play RTS Games with no issue. I have a thing about keeping my Screens Mint-Condition so I just dont use the TouchScreen out of Habit.

As someone with the deck, ally (have returned) and go, it’s fair to say the deck is my go-to when I want burn some time. It’s just amazing that I can get the urge to play older console games and have them loaded in seconds. The screen is beautiful and gives you great performance for emulation and indy games. I also really love how big and supportive the deck community is for the best possible experience. That being said, I could never recommend it to someone who enjoys a large variety of games that include AAA. The deck struggles to play big titles even at the lowest settings. The Ally/Go can actually play demanding games at above average settings, and with windows having far more functionality, can use it for a lot more than just gaming. I’d never replace my gaming PC with one, but I use my Legion Go as a PC tablet every day.

I think he's referring to when you start up a different game it doesn't resume where you last left it. Some consoles, for example the PS5, will let you boot into a "saved state" of the game so you don't have to launch from the main menu of the game everytime. It's a pretty nitpicky thing and honestly not even important in my eyes.

Same with me. I went for the SD Oled. I'd rather have better battery life and more portability. The flexibility of the deck using Linux works for me as well - particularly for emulation. There are also plenty of games on Steam for my needs. I can also stream my xbox series x onto it. Looked at the ROG and GO, but after seeing the Digital Foundry comparisons, the performance at 15w and below - I went for the Deck. For anybody still deciding, my advice would be to look at all three and then decide based on your planned use. If you want to play AAA games whilst plugged in at 25+w then it'll most likely be the ROG or GO. If you want flexibility, great community support and longer battery in most games, then it'll be the Deck. On screens this size, 800p looks great, especially on Oled.

Asus proved to be the same on that regard, that being their standard practice of abandoning software support after about 2 years (and thats for phones, who knows how many softare updates rog will get). They really suck at being long term and their customer support is...questionable to say the least. ROG Ally may be a nice handheld albeit quite power hungry but the real problem here is Asus unable to learn their lesson on long term support. I would say that everyone wants to enjoy the device they paid for as long as possible and get their moneys worth without feeling regret that it could be dropped in such a short period.

Turns out all I needed was a killswitch case and a screen protector as now the bezels feel perfectly proportioned with the beefy case and the screen protector has eliminated the frosted glass look, which I feel makes the display look all the more vibrant. I do love my 256GB LCD Steam Deck. Debated upgrading but held off for now. The trackpads are so nice for older PC games and navigating the desktop is awesome. SteamOS is lovely and is mostly pretty simple to get other games to run and add them to Steam. For intensive AAA games where the Steam Deck sometimes suffers from thermal throttling (because I like to push the graphics settings) on sustained high temperatures, streaming via Moonlight has been awesome. Since the Deck is only 720p, my modest RX 580 can stream AAA games at Ultra graphics settings to my Deck. No heat, more battery, and awesome graphics. Configured Wake on LAN to turn on my gaming PC and then activates Steam Big Picture. But then it's still running on my gaming PC, if I sleep my Deck. I am very curious though about the thermal improvements due to less power draw on the OLED. Without FSR, does your OLED thermal throttle at Medium/High on Spider-Man Remastered?

While other devices may be slightly more powerful and I won't lie I'm a bit envious of VRR displays, but other than that the Steam Deck, to me, is a more complete device with a much better interface and more stable platform for the time being with more features. I'm so glad that I don't have to deal with Windows, just that alone is worth so much to me. The quick resume from suspend is vital to this kind of portable device, especially since I tend to play maybe 10-20 min then take a break (have a small kid at home).

The only thing I dislike is hdr. I don't understand it, it's just more contrast... I never had hdr before but it's not my thing, dark are darker and bright are brighter. But I like my game to not be too contrasted. On some games like Cross Code it's not great at all.

I gotta say what with work and such ive been gaming less and less. I picked up a used steam deck 512 and play red dead 2 with my wife now on the train. It only takes 30w to charge while gaming means i can take a small solar palel i have,100w, and a battery bank. I can ride my bike out somewhere secluded, put up a hammock in the shade and game all weekend. Its soo nice. Its my primary system now. I guarantee if you get any of the 3 and your a gameboy fan, youll love it.

Bluetooth earphones with microphones wasn't a problem on the LCD Deck, it worked fine. The issue you may have gotten confused by on the LCD Deck was that you couldn't use "wired" headphones with the "internal" microphone. If you plugged in wired headphones on the LCD Deck, it would assume that there was an inline mic, with no ability to force it to use the internal mic. This is fixed on the hardware-side in the OLED Deck, but still a bit clunky currently on the software-side - it still defaults to assuming an in-line mic, and there is no way to switch it in Game mode (it's not the audio device itself, but like a sub-setting of the audio device), so you have to go to Desktop mode to switch it to use the internal mic whenever you plug in headphones.

Because the next big thing in Handhelds now happening which is FSR 3 Frame Generation..... Basically every game supports DLSS 3 now can be used in Ally and Legion Go getting a whopping over twice the fps...... Deck can't do it and to avoid latency you need to hit 50-60fps without it but when used you hit 110-140fps..... Hence making use of FSR 3.... ROG Ally also using 120hz panel made VRR possible, a combination of VRR + FSR 3 is actually a leap forward than Deck can offer in smoothness experience it's not even comparable.... I have Ally + Deck OLED tried the FSR 3 mod in Cyberpunk and Ally is like 4090 vs 3050 in Deck or so, it's that big

@@Andrewy27 It's a comment section. Opinions are, one would think, expected here. I'll phrase it another way: can people perceive a significant improvement from 90 to 120fps on such a small screen? Given limited GPU power, I would have assumed that most people would see more tangible benefit in bumping up other graphics settings. Or in saving battery.

I haven't played it since August of 2023, i turned it on and it had top update it for 2 hours straight. Not to mention games dont run well unless its a manual TDP and plugged in. Battery life is still shit. The support from ASUS is by far the worst ive ever dealt with. I am a PC builder/Owner i would just prefer to complications of my Personal Computer. Saying "HDR is only supported for HDR enabled games" is like saying "the speakers are only supported by games that produce sound". What else did you expect? (I do realize that most games have sound and only some have hdr support, but I couldn't think of a comparison that captured both the silliness of the statement and the adoption rate, so I picked one that shows the silliness I wanted to focus on.)

I think it's reasonable to assume that Valve applied what they do when developing games when designing the Steam Deck - they hire people (or at least many of their own employees) to spend hundreds of hours in "testing" the handling of multiple builds of the Deck's body/casing, then they get the concensus of what those people want and felt most comfortable to hold for long playtimes. And this is what we get. It's just Valve magic. They don't think money first, but customer first.

Also I think steam will be supporting their device better than asus or lenovo and thats why i ordered steam deck oled 512gb. My 2024 resolution is to play far more PC games this year (I was console-only until now). That being said I do kinda like the idea of having a SteamDeck as a sort of supplement. For example I have FF4 3D, which from what I can gather is stuck at 20fps. FF4 is also one of my favourite games. So then... PC for the big releases (FFXIV for example), SteamDeck for the smaller titles. That kinda deal. I'd also likely try to get emulators on there too. Dragon Quest 8 on the go that isn't on mobile or 3DS? Let's go!
