John Farnham has said that he often sings things off-stage that he'd never dare try onstage. I wish to god he'd done this onstage though, because he'd have blown everyone away, and introduced younger fans to Led Zeppelin. His backing singers in this rehearsal would be the same ones he had for many years: Venetta Fields, Lisa Edwards and Lindsay Field. Consummate professionals. Now we just need you to feature Farnham's performance in the Gethsemane scene of Jesus Christ Superstar, and you'll have seen the best he's ever been!

Sadly, there are no videos of this which is such a shame. Fortunately it did make an appearance on one of the Rarities Albums. Not only a stella vocal by John Farnham but his band is made up of some of the best musicians Australia had at the time. The drummer, guitarists, keys, backup vocalists have stayed with him for years. They read each other like books..all makes for extraordinary performances everytime they get together. John's vocal range is base note F2 and his full voice top note G5. But then the screams in black dog are E6# or maybe F6. Which makes it 4 - 4.1 octaves ...I suspect there is also a couple of later songs which are lower than F2..

This recording of Black Dog was recorded on sound check in 1994 . Apparently John Farnham has only performed this song once in concert in Brisbane the same year . This song was included on a Rarities album in 1997 . John Farnham at this point of time was into his 40’s and being an sound check John would’ve be comfortably holding back . Nothing against Led Zeppelin and Robert Plant’s vocals , but Plant was on his 20’s when Led Zeppelin recording and was together performing this . And Robert wasn’t full belting range like John Farnham was . John is 73 and now probably fully retired after sadly losing his long time manager and best friend Glenn Wheatley to covid 19 early this year , they had an partnership for over 40 years . John Farnham cops a lot of slack for since his many comeback tours since he had a major tour called The Last Time in 2003 . But since that Last Time tour he has only released one album with some original music on it 2010 Jack . John as slowing downsizing into semi retirement with touring no big arena shows nothing like what he did in the 80’s and 90’s only if was touring with other artists like Tom Jones , Olivia Newton John ( they have been friends since the 60’s RIP ) he has even toured with Lionel Richie and Stevie Nicks being the opening act . John started to enjoy doing the summer festivals tours with other Australian artist before the pandemic happened even when the song line up was just a greatest hits set list when he just do 10 shows in a year at the most . Of course John Farnham was always available for a charity concert which was his last appearance on stage in 2020 charity gig for the Australian bushfires disaster which Olivia Newton John and Brain May from Queen was special guest on stage with him . The Farnham Band are highly respected as some best session players in Australia , The Farnham band has very few line up changes since John formed the band in 1987 . The Farnham band has also was the band for Kylie Minogue and Olivia Newton John on the national tours .

Here Queen + John Farnham extended version of We Will Rock You . kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIGZgGieeLNkg5o Apparently rumoured John Farnham was asked to join Queen in the mid 90’s . He was apparently Queens first choice after the loss of Freddie Mercury . John probably not interested in leaving Australia to based in London he turned it down . Plus being Freddie Mercury‘s replacement is big job , John had already was somewhat replacement singer in the Australian band the Little River Band which hardcore LRB fans disliked . John did say about being in a band he’s a good team player as long he’s the captain . He just used to being his own boss responsible for his own mistakes and successes . So understand why he turned Queen down if the rumour is true ? Queen went on and hired Paul Rogers for a few years. Queen and John Farnham join forces in 2003 to re-record We Will Rock You over the original record John Farnham added extra vocals Brian May and Roger Taylor like John’s addition also added in extra guitar work and drums . But both artists never performed live together . It was used as promotional song for 2003 rugby union World Cup .

@@TheThamesmen Just an update guys, as I'm not sure if you have seen/heard the news, Breaking news in Australia today that John was taken to hospital today for surgery/treatment for cancer ❤️ Im sure he has all of Australia behind him as he goes through this difficult time.

John started in the middle to late 60's His first hit was a song he hates to sing now a days called Sadie The Cleaning Lady but he did do another song called One Is The Loneliness Number that would still be cool in this day and age look it up and see if you like it but remember it was in the 60's. John has a big gig coming up soon head lining with 4 or 5 other bands and artists I think in October or November will be in front of about 8 to 10 thousand people just a small little festival just before Christmas. Keep up the great work you both are doing cheeers

I hadn't heard about that. Unlikely he would be involved now...as I imagine it will take a certain long time for him to recover from his cancer surgery 🙏❤️

I can guarantee you that this only exists because the Front of House sound engineer decided that he should put the soundcheck on tape, post mix! Been there, done that.

It’s a great version of a great song. I didn’t know it existed, but when I saw the title of the video I was 100% confidant that John was going to completely own the track. However about 20 years ago I went to a concert for some headline act like Red Hot Chili Peppers or similar, and the support band was Train. You know, the guys who did Drops Of Jupiter. I didn’t get grabbed by that song when it came out, and it got played on the radio so much I was totally uninterested in them when they took the stage. But they did a cover of Black Dog and the guy on vocals ripped out a superb version. Not as over the top as John’s version, it was much more like Robert’s version except it was completely controlled and polished. I had to give the guy a ton of respect, he had a great set of pipes and totally turned my opinion around on them.

Train may don’t be everyone’s cup of tea but are serious musicians. Thanks for the comment

Hi guys, you should totally check out a KZbin video by a guy called John Stolfo called John Farnham can sing anything! It’s a three part series but each video is only about 7 minutes. It shows him singing in almost every genre of music from country through to opera. These really show his versatility 😊

I think this version is a proper studio version, he did release the song on a group of albums called Anthology 1,2 & 3 but he didn't release it as a single. Word is though that it was his warm up song. There is a version of him doing it live somewhere on YT I have seen it.
