In the wake of Richard's death, I've been watching some of these old TV commercials, and can't help but marvel at the wide variety of styles he was able to master. Some of these designs were absolutely not meant to be animated. The Tic-Tacs commercial, for example, has things like visible folds in the clothing of its characters: details that are far too complicated to be drawn over and over again. But Richard Williams was a man who could convincingly put animated characters next to actual humans. No task was too great for him, and the world already feels a little less interesting for his loss.

Agreed. Some of those old ad writers used to have a delightfully wry sense of humor. They knew that the best way to get people to remember you was to make them smile. I also like the aftershave one ("Remember, never for evil!") because the premise is just so bizarre. Also, the lighting and angles look really nice! That must have been so hard to animate, though, and those ad agencies expect you to work quick.
