@@fan2hd277 Let’s leave Fox News alone. OK. I’ll be specific. As a “historian”, he stated how good were relationships between Arabs and Jews, but did not say a word about Farhud. Google it . Hundred Jews were murdered in Baghdad ( it is Iraq). Avi Shlaim himself from Baghdad originally. It happened before the establishment of Israel. Only this fact alone disqualifies him from being a historian. But I will continue: describing flight of Arabs from Palestine in 1947-48 he uses the word “expulsion” ( btw, only small portion of Arabs were really driven out - it is a well known fact), but when he is talking about Jews flight from Iraq and other Arab countries, he uses the word “migration”. So, by his “historical” opinion, hundreds of thousands Jews in Arab countries almost simultaneously suddenly discovered a burning desire to “migrate” in the same direction, leaving all properties they had behind… Strange phenomena… What it could be??? So, he is a liar, or half-truths teller, which is tantamount to lying. I can go on and on dispelling his lies and distortions but it will take the whole article to write. For me, as a person who is studying Middle East history and conflicts for more than 20 years it is enough. Hopefully, you have learnt something….

We should also accept that Arab Iraqis turned on the minority Jews even before Israel was created. For example, the violent Farhud in Baghdad in 1941. I just want to thank you brother Muhammad Jalal for your work. May Allah continue to raise and guide you and us through your work. It is always an honor for me to listen to Prof. Avi Shlaim's wisdom on the history of the conflict. I pray for peace in Palestine and that this conflict is eventually resolved without either side transgressing. I normally enjoy reading (good) comments, rather than expressing my own thoughts. But for this one, I felt like I had to say something. I am an Iraqi by blood. My father left Iraq sometime during the Iraq-Iran war. Since then, Iraq has gotten worse and worse; even today, most Iraqis outside hold the opinion that it is a shadow of its former self. My father still reminisces about the Iraq of once-upon-a-time, when children of diverse religions or beliefs used to go play around the priest, the imam, and the rabbi, and receive blessings from all of them. My father named me Bilal, despite the dismay of some family members. Mainly because the name "Bilal" wasn't common in Iraq- or at least in my family- and was seen as more on the non-Arab side. My father named me Bilal, after Bilal Ibn Rabah (Radiya-Allahu Anh) out of his hatred of divide, especially his hatred of Arab nationalism (or Al-Uruba in general). Like many other Iraqis, my father lived the divide of Iraq and witnessed the emergence of transgressing political parties one worse than the other. The hatred planted over the decades into the people of Iraq for each other didn't help either. Eventually, he had no choice but to leave. My father always tells me that the worst thing that happened to the middle east was the rise of nationalism. It was the piece of the puzzle that allowed nefarious outsiders to do what they did. I didn't use to think much of it. But the more I grow up, the more I can see exactly what he meant. The Jews of Iraq were the pride of Iraq. Many of their established families- their names are still referenced today. They contributed to Iraq for millennia, they were Iraqi. And one of the biggest losses for the land of Iraq was losing its Jewish population. I hope one day, the Muslim ummah will unite again and undo the wrongs that have been done in this past era, both by those transgressing towards extremism and those transgressing towards corruption... Not under nationalism or tribalism, but under the taqwa and justice of the early Islamic caliphates.

To the question of whether the Jewish community could have survived in the post Ottoman era? The answer is yes, the case study of this is the Christian communities that are still there and hold government and education positions across the region.. as a matter of fact, there still are some Arab Jews in their homelands like Yemen, Morocco and Egypt. To be honest am not sure if the other religions in muslim worlds have the same rights as the muslims may have in many of the western secular countries. I was pointed out by christian missionaries, that there would be an uproar. Which i have seen in Malaysia and Indonesia. This is often an argument brought up by Indian Hindu fascists. Agree that we believe Islam is true and would like ppl to be muslims and not convert. But isnt the freedom to choose a fundamental right and religion cannot be forced?

An amazing interview of an extraordinarily knowledgeable, insightful and wise historian of Israel and the Palestinians! One of the most informative and enlightening interviews on this complex subject, I have ever seen. Professor Shlaim puts everything into an easy to follow and understand narrative, that gives proper context and perspective into what is now unfolding in Gaza and the West Bank! Clearly what occurred on October 7th, while reprehensible, was not at all an act that was unprovoked, as claimed by Israel and the West. There is far more to this than we are being made aware of. Thanks to the brilliance and supreme wisdom of this learned scholar, we all have an appreciation for what motivated this attack in the first place. I would like all Americans and the world to see this interview, in order that they get an accurate picture as to what has and continues to go on with the Palestinian people , and the brutal occupation they have endured for decades now, at the cruel hands of their Israeli masters! Disgraceful that the world has allowed such barbaric and inhumane treatment of an entire people, go unchallenged and without consequences, for those committing this brutality against defenseless civilians! How has humanity allowed such depravity to continue for so long, without ever intervening to put a stop to this genocide??? The guest is brilliant, soft spoken, and very nice to listen to. I couldn't help but notice that he talks about hard evidence, yet he found it absolutely ok to adopt a huge side of the 'israeli' narrative without that hard evidence and ignored the evidence to the contrary. As in, he accepts that ALL 'israeli' deaths on oct 7 were perpetrated by Hamas and not the mass Hannibal directive, ignoring countless reports we've seen of survivors saying they were being shot at by their own forces, with tanks and helicopters. Especially the Nova festival event. My problem is he didn't differentiate or even bring up that evidence. It's not to deny that deaths have happened on the 'israeli' side that were caused by Hamas fire. And he used the term terrorism with Palestinian resistance while discussing Oct 7, but not IDF response, even though he did use ethnic cleansing and genocide (he used terrorism for zionist acts in Iraq and Egypt which is good). However if you're using the 'terrorism' term, apply it equally or don't use it at all. I also disagree with the term 'Cruel Zionism' which can suggest that there can be a zionism that is not cruel, a zionism that is perfectly ok. However, that has never been the case since it was established as an ideology. All in all though, I enjoyed the discussion so thank you for inviting the professor.
