The ones from the 90s and 2000s were the best. I'm kind of disappointed that teen comedies went downhill right as I became a teenager. Teens in the 90s had these amazing movies that defined adolescence in that decade that they were teens in, like they were made for them. For us, I think the only decent teen comedy that came out when I was in high school was Duff. Duff was pretty great, but it's no Mean Girls or Clueless. The rest were not very good at all. The Kissing Booth? Girl bye. Teen shows are getting better though.

Totally agreed. What’s interesting is I’d argue there are still a lot of really incredible funny films being made, it’s just rarer to have them be a ‘pure comedy’. Feels like often comedy gets a little hidden in the mixing of genres: The Favourite The Nice Guys Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri I, Tonya Hunt for the Wilderpeople Vice Ingrid Goes West Sorry to Bother You Grand Budapest Hotel Jojo Rabbit More and more we see comedy get used to talk about serious / less inherently funny subjects as a sort of “should this even be funny?” provocation. Which is amazing (and obviously being able to find light in the darkness feels incredibly valuable right now) but I truly hope we haven’t entirely lost the days of great smart dumb pure comedies. Being invited to laugh and then finding yourself doing exactly that takes true filmmaking craft.

I agree, but Three Billboards isn't really a comedy at all to be honest. There's comedy in it but I would say less so than even the original Fargo. The three films in the 2010s that made me laugh the most were Get Out, Pain & Gain and Kung Fury. One is a horror/comedy, one is an action/comedy and the other is a shitpost which came from a kickstarter for a parody trailer on youtube to be made into an actual film. I love Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Ragnarok though and I'm kicking myself that I still haven't seen Jojo Rabbit.

There have been a few gems recently like "Dolemite is My Name", "Barb and Star" & "Borat 2" but those are few and far between. I really miss the days of Ted and The Hangover. Nowadays when I go to the theater it's always so empty unless it's a marvel movie.

You hit the nail on the head with this one. 22 Jump Street was truly the end of an era. You just don't get movies like Tropic Thunder, Superbad, or the Hangover anymore. I've watched Booksmart 3 times since it released because it tickled that part of my brain in a way a movie hadn't done in nearly 10 years. Be better hollywood

I feel like comedies now are so improvised that they are limiting themselves to just spoken jokes whereas something like Shaun of the dead shows is how much you can use visual comedy and not just people falling over and stuff but even like camera angles and scene transitions to make jokes

Because people are insane these days. When I was in 9th Grade, my public high school's student council voted to ban all Christmas and Hanukkah celebrations or ornaments from the school. They said they "didn't want to offend anyone". They even called the party before break a "Winter Party", not a holiday party. I'm all for showing respect, but this PC thing has gone WAY too far. If you make a joke about another country that locals would actually agree with, people call you mean or offensive. They even tried to "cancel" Speedy Gonzalez.

2000s and decade before that were movie golden years for all movie genres. You had ballooning budgets, but not yet solidified corporate structures/control. Also CGI and effects had become amazing. This basically gave you just optimal mix for really good movies, before that you had a lot of creativity, but not abundance of money and technology to realize that creativity. After 2000s on other hand corporate started to snuff out creativity and decisions were made solely on basis of safe investments.
