I’m willing to die on the hill that Stranger Things should’ve been either single season or an anthology with new characters each season. First season ended perfectly and IMO and later seasons lost the horror elements in favour of just being a nostalgia fest.
@texaspoontappa20883 жыл бұрын
It gets worse in my opinion when the group is either split up or they add too many new characters. The charm of season 1 was that we followed a tight knit group of kids trying to save their friends. Then they added that girl and started splitting up the group, then in the third season there are way too many extra characters and the original group is barely together. I get that it's realistic for friends to outgrow each other at that age but for the audience, it felt like the show lost what it was supposed to be. I wish they'd stopped after the first or _maybe_ the second season.

@anoziraflaminghot3 жыл бұрын
@@kickitsmooth that was actually how the show was genuinely supposed to be. if you look it up online articles mention that it was pitched to Netflix with the intention to be an anthology series. but Netflix had the hindsight that the audience would fall in love with the characters and thought it would be best to continue their journey through multiple seasons.

Funnily enough, Arrow did something similar. Korean dramas very rarely get 2nd seasons, which is actually why I love them. It's 10-20 (usually 16) 1 hour long episodes, and then the show ends. Resolved, with no cliffhanger. It's just so nice compared to American shows that either gets dragged out to make more money or gets cancelled too early.

Korean filmmaking, screenwriting and acting (for the most part) is so on point. Finally, foreign audiences are getting to see soooo many incredible films and tv shows coming out of Korea. I read that directors train, basically like an apprentice, with a great director before they take on their own movies or shows. What I enjoy most about Korean shows and movies, aside from what you pointed out, is how they don’t feel the need to have actors articulate every thought or piece of exposition. A simple look or nod is enough for the audience to know or at least get some idea of what might be happening. We don’t need to be spoon fed, and that helps make a great drama, thriller or even horror story. If you enjoyed Squid Game, then you might also like Sweet Home (Netflix). Not quite the same level but still great. And check out Mother, another of Parasite writer/director’s earlier movies.
@patrickt.64923 жыл бұрын
Itaewon Class is such a good show. It tells a complete story over 16 episodes in which every character ends in a place that is different from where they began. There would be no story to tell in a second season. The show said everything it needed to.
@JonJayAllDay2 жыл бұрын
Yeah i think Western shows should take a big note from Korean shows, like make something good and short that can be wrapped in a season or two. If its good or popular enough maybe it'll get to go on, but i know and get that a lot western audiences are really use to shows, movies and media in general having multiple sequels, spinoffs and successors and theres a lot of money in that from a marketing side. So with that in mind to me the cut off for a show should be 5 seasons. Thats generally when shows start falling off, really in my opinion no show needs more than 5 seasons, because after that it usually just gets unnecessary to me. Like after that usually the creators, writers and executives start milking the show for all its worth, the shows popularity starts whining, or theres a dip in quality. Like if you cant do everything you set out to do at the beginning with 5 seasons worth of content then your doing something wrong. There are expectations, some shows have stayed good and maintained its popularity after more than 5 seasons but thats all they are, just the expectations not the norm.

Everyone's saying it, but it's true: Avatar: The Last Airbender. Perfect length. Perfect chapters to thematically tie the story- water: the discovery and introduction. Earth: the grounding and fleshing out of the story. Fire: heightening of stakes up to the epic finale. You wish there was Air. Like, I was left wanting more. That's the best feeling. Even without the miscalleneous comics/books, I could imagine the story going forward. It lives on with a great memory left to me of the good times had. Riverdale had a really good intriguing first season that should have been all the show did. I loved it and remembered it fondly. It seemed really unnecessary to do a season 2 but I watched it and just.... wow. THEN they did a season 3 and half way through I was out. It destroyed everything I felt for the first season and now I cringe at those beloved comic book characters I used to read all the time as a kid.

What really separates the first season of Stranger Things with the other seasons is the friendship of the main 4 boys + elle. It was just so nostalgic and wholesome watching 4 nerdy dnd boys from the 80s interact with each other and a "strange" newcomer. Also the demogorgons just haven't been scary since season 1. There was something so eerie about a humanoid monster like the demogorgon in season 1.
@edensnotd3ad3 жыл бұрын
Something that is a big pet peeve of mine is the fact that the boys in season 3 just like stop being nerds and just focus on the girls for some reason. As if in 9th grade it’s just now wrong to like DnD? If it were me i’d probably play DnD to distract myself or something lol. idk i just never liked how they became so girl crazy and lost the connection i really had with them, that being all the nerdy stuff they liked to do in the first and somewhat second season.

thats crazy, you're right, they even had side characters that were recurring in all seasons like Janice, Gunther, even David who was barely there was in both seasons 1 and 10. I think the cast just had major loyalty to the show, most of them were pretty up & coming and not known in entertainment at that point so even though they did make other ventures while still filming friends, they ultimately knew friends is how and why they got their big breaks. Many actors in tv shows these days are already well known so they wouldn't feel that same connection to the shows they're doing regardless of how well it does.

Squid Game has even less reason than a lot of shows to stay past its welcome since it's bound by the fact that it's so tied to its allegory and message about current stage capitalism and it pretty perfectly conveyed said message, every character played their role and died when necessary, the plot is bigger than Gi-hun or Sangwoo or Saebyeok or the cop or whoever else, and sure, there's open ends whether Jun-ho survived being shot, what happened for his brother to end up like that and of course the ending few seconds with Gi-hun not getting on the plane and clearly planning something but it doesn't bother me personally if those plot points are ever tied up and I'm happy for it to stay open ended because Squid Game is set in the real world, it's not like Hunger Games where while it has a similar ideology behind it; it's dystopian and otherwordly and it's in part a self-insert fantasy/projecting means for teenagers. It doesn't do any service to Squid Game as a series if you had Gi-hun and Jun-ho end the games. Because that means, to the viewers and in relation to said allegory, you gonna have Gi-hun quite literally ending capitalism. And that would just be weird as hell and bad writing if you took an average, outright goofy, cinnamon roll ass, sweet character like Gi-hun, who is meant to be a direct stand-in for a bunch of real world problems and impoverished people (right down to the strike he took a part in 11 years ago being based on a real workers strike that happened in South Korea in 2009) and whose character is meant to be all about kindness, caring, trust and humanity persevering in spite of great greed, pain and cruelty being something's he's faced with and given the option to take part in (and it being a big point that it is _not_ in his character to hurt others, Saebyeok outright says it when he considers killing Sangwoo, not like someone like Katniss who is a far more fantastical character and is trained like a warrior, Gi-hun is literally just someone's nice, cute dad who done fucked up), and just had him going John McClane mode or turning into a genius and doing some guerilla warfare bullshit on a bunch of people who are meant to be stand-ins for real life billionaires, and I'm sorry but that's fucking dumb as hell bro tl;dr my point is asking for a Squid Game season 2 is almost like asking for a fucking Animal Farm or 1984 sequel, it's a piece of media trying to say something, conveying the state of affairs at a pretty specific time and place and while it'll hold weight for years to come it just cheapens it to make a season 2, it already said what it had to say so their choices going forward are either saying more of the same or having it turn into some whack, out of character, shark jump-y bullshit

I feel like with streaming platforms gaining more traction, we'll see less dragged out shows. Network television (NBC, ABC, CBS) love long-running shows because they can have episode re-runs and milk advertising dollars. There's NO way a second season of Squid Game could be as good as the first. The first season had the novelty of the games themselves and half the fun (if not all of it) was discovering how they worked, the small glimpses of the stuff behind the scenes serving to whet our appetites while working as a self-contained critique of capitalism. With maybe the exception of the cop and his brother (which imo could never stand alone as an entire season unless some serious finesse is involved), there's just nothing a second season could bring to the table in terms of excitement and thrills. All we can hope for is that it's artistically competent.
@Ray035953 жыл бұрын

I feel like squid game could work with several seasons if they just ignored Gi-hun, an anthology series where we have different characters each time and we learn more and more every time could probably go for 5+ years and still be interesting. They could also do like flashback seasons where we see the frontman play or the first games etc etc. They could stretch this for years and it would be... ok, but i would like them to end on top like you've said. apparently this was the intended ending for a while. It just unfortunately is the perfect setup for capitalism to take advantage of. And I think the writers should've been aware of how contradictory the ending would be to set up a second season for a show that very clearly worked best as a one-off. Let alone, that the thought of Gi-Hun taking down this entire organization is simply ridiculous.
@patrickt.64923 жыл бұрын
The only loose end that I wonder about is what happened to Ali's family. Is Gi-Hun going to use his money to help them? I suppose they could have a twist where the detective survived getting shot and falling off the cliff, although that seems a bit of a reach. The more I think about it, the more torn I am about the ending. I kind of want to see Gi-Hun take down the evil organization but I wonder if taking the cynical route and just having him get on the plane would be better. At least he won the bet against Il-Nam.

I wonder if it’s because the characters are awful people who never learn from their mistakes, so they can exist in an eternal yet believable state of non-development.

I was looking for the iasip comment. That's so true I think because the gang is so awful you just wanna see if they can top off what they have done so far . And the characters are deeper that what they seem

@@butterflymilkkk IASIP is such an interesting example because while I do feel the last couple of seasons have been slightly weaker (at some points when I was watching it felt like they were just rehashing old jokes, kind of like the show had lost its mojo from the earlier seasons), they have found a way to strike a balance between developing the characters' traits and dynamics while simultaneously keeping them 'static' enough as to ensure that the gang stays relatively the same and everyone keeps playing their role sort of

That show is going downhill imo. It’s still pretty funny but i feel like i can rewatch almost all episodes from the first 10-11 seasons while after that im ok with only seeing those episodes once and be done with it

Don't think that the last two seasons are a proof of going downhill. They have some classic episodes in there, just some weaks ones but still it's really impresive that they can have some of the best episodes after that many seasons. Hope the new one gets on top like the firsts TWELVE seasons

The show creator of Squid Game himself even said he actually didn't originally plan to make a second season. I wouldn't mind of they left it at one season tbh. And I totally agree with you about Stranger things. I feel like Stanger Things definitely did not need to go on this long. The first season was excellent. And I enjoyed the second seasom for the most part. But it totally feels like the show is being dragged out at this point I prefer when shows are just made to be one season or a few seasons so that the storyline can be finished and everyone can move on.

i would like to see 1 more season of squid game but with different characters. The only character that i feel should be mentioned in season 2 is the cop who fell into the water. For the main guy, i feel it should just end there.

Still feel like season 3 should’ve been the final season. It had such a sense of finality to it with Hopper’s death, Joyce, Will, Jonathan and Eleven moving away. It was the perfect bittersweet ending. Besides, by Season 3, you can tell they’re running out of ideas so to end it there would’ve been perfect. I’m kind of scared for season 4 despite the amazing trailers

All I know is that Nathan will go out on top if he keeps up the classics

Avatar the Last Airbender and Dark are great examples for shows that were done when they were done. The team behind Avatar was offered more screen time. They could have gotten 6 or more seasons. But they said no. They had the arc planned and they finished it in 3 seasons and it´s one of the most perfect shows ever. Dark was perfectly planned out. Every line, every piece of clothing, of background was placed purposefully. The show would have suffered tremendously if that hadn´t been the case. They knew start and finish and it showed. I love that in shows.

The Wire is another show that did not go for too long, and is underrated. People are divided over the last season, but I really enjoyed when taking into context what the writer were trying to communicate.

Schitts Creek is another great example. I think the ending was great although it broke my heart in some ways. They decided to end it just as it grew in popularity so you know they were writing the ending as they originally intended and I respect that.

Yes. I love k-drama because i get a complete story in roughly 16 hour long episodes. Meaning they don’t have to rush like in movies, but they don’t have to drag everything out like in traditional American tv. It’s my perfect middle, and I hope Netflix doesn’t ruin it because they’ve been putting some banging k-dramas out.

Suits is another perfect example of this- the writing was immaculate up until s5 but after mike went to prison shit got c o r n y

Truth, seasons 6-8 were bad, season 9 was great though imo. It had a great ending

I think going out on top is not really the priority for most networks nowadays. As you said, the main thing is finding the next money maker, keep it until it's not profitable and move on. Legacy only has meaning to the viewers while the producers will put the most value on how long a show was able to air successfully.

Grey's Anatomy is that show that I loved and thought I would never get tired of watching but despite the "there's always gonna be people going to the hospital" the writers messed up the best characters and it got so weird and boring I stopped watching
