the idea of a horror cinematic universe is so cool to me and I think they executed it pretty decently

They were on a hot streak until The Nun came out. They had Connuring, Annabelle, Conjuring 2, Annabelle Creation. Say what you want about Annabelle 1, but it still has decent scares and fits in the same tone as the other ones. And all four of those movies were well connected to each other. When the Nun came out the universe went to shit and hadn’t recovered since.

My grandpa grew up in Mexico, and he also has forgotten mostly everything he knows, yet he still tells the story about when he was in high school, he snuck out to hang out with his friends. On his way home, he had to walk down a long railroad track. His friends weren't with him anymore, so when he heard them laughing and talking behind him, he was a little scared. When he turned around, he said that down the trail was La llarona. He said she was beautiful until he got closer to her, and she looked up at him and was pail and sick, looking. He ran home without looking back and never saw her again. He has yet to change or forget that story from over 60 years ago.....

One of my favourite horror movie scares of all time was in Annabelle Creation. It was the scene when the two girls were playing in Annabelle's room at night, and accidentally hit the doll's face while the doll was sitting on the bed, causing its head to be turned slightly. Then, between cuts, the girls notice that Annabelle had turned her head back towards them. There was no loud music cues or dramatic score, no "oh my God did you see that", and no frills. Just a doll head-turning slightly off-screen 👍
@christopheresquire9472 жыл бұрын
My favorite was the scene where the girl hides under the stairs and you can see two eyes right before the doll gets snatched. Nobody says anything about it, no attention is drawn to it, you can just make out two eyes and THEN the jumpscare. It’s amazing

I think the best scene in the history of horror movies is that when Lorrain and Vallak officially "introduce" themselves to each other. Well, specifically Lorrain's line "Your name gives me dominion over you, demon. And I do know your name! You are Vallak!". There's something so magnificent about it. I think it's the first time when someone who is not a priest is in direct confrontation with a demon so fiercely.

The nun/nun 2 had the potential to be similar, especially since SPOILER it is implied that the nun is a descendant of Saint Lucia, and she is now kinda known across Europe as the nun who defeated valak. It could be this "ah yes my old enemy" feeling. Nun 2 had so much potential but all the scenes fall flat because there's no build up of sinister events followed by the nun being called on the scene and then no consequent figuring out of valak's objective and backstory. one second everyone is calmly living life, the next Maurice is full blown possessed

The point in time where the demon 'vomits' into the characters mouth isn't 'vomit' its the exact moment of possession. The nasty evil has been forcefully placed inside the character. I know alot or most will disagree but I feel like from a real-world standpoint that the actual Annabelle doll was scarier than the one used in the films. The one they used already looked terrifying when it was originally made, like they meant for it to be unsettling. That kind of thing is something I'd keep my eyes on if some seriously unexplainable crap went down since its got 'permanent terrifying schemer' face. You could spot that friggin horror show out of a thousand other dolls. Essentially the cinematic Annabelle is getting profiled since she just looks the part, all blame roads end with her. The original doll however, is one that you could throw in a pile of other dolls and not think anything of it. That blank face, innocent smile, and unassuming posture isn't terrifying you because it hasn't done anything yet to warrant fear. Annabelle from the movie was a custom job that has few copies, while the raggedy ann doll is mass-produced. She's tiny, physically unimposing, created from flimsy materials, sporting a very non-threatening look and blindly pleasant designed demeanor. She's the kind of doll parents would place in a crib because it literally looks as if it was designed to be incapable of harm. When messed up unexplainable things begin to happen, and assuming you're lucky enough to actually suspect something of the doll so easy to dismiss because of a look intentionally designed to be a pleasant and innocent presence given to the youngest of children, you tell me that those blank eyes that are always staring but never actually looking at anything, and that exaggerated cartoonish smile don't start to get creepy, then progressively creepier.

I couldn’t agree more!! It’s the innocent, blank, mass produced nature that would have made it so much more terrifying. The only way they could have made their doll work in my eyes would have been to start with a beautiful version of the final doll. Pretty smile, bright eyes etc. then slowly throughout the movie have her change into the final “horror” version we started with. It’s too unbelievable that any mother would love that doll for a child!!
@rapz85 Жыл бұрын
@@Lsharp416 Aside from the raggedy ann-abelle, that would have been the way to go if they'd thought of it. Could have kept the unique look that way, but the pleasant looking doll sporting an inviting/welcoming demeanor would have contrasted well with the 'difficult to pinpoint' increasing horrors that seem to always occur around it. I'd have been a fan.

Creepy is in the eye of the beholder, just like most other stuff. If I ever got a chance to visit that museum and burn the doll then I can guarantee then worst thing that would happen to me is a charge of criminal damage. Its literally just a story made up for profit.

Your analysis in the beginning of why some horror movies just didn’t do it for me makes so much sense now!! I hate the cliche characters that are always doing the “dumb” things when presented with danger. And the jump scare after jump scare at every moment you think it’s going to happen takes away from the scare. Having a smart, developed, relatable character is much more engaging and in turn makes it scarier when something bad happens. It’s so obvious now just something I never sat and thought about! At timestamp 18:24, you asked the question about the 12 year gap. I believe that shows how patient "evil beings" can be waiting for an opportunity to make themselves known or that could be the explained as the time taken to begin the process Ed Warren discussed in the Conjuring. Oppression, Infestation and Possession. One thing that always jumps out at me watching great stories is that they are all centered around children and some threat toward children, in the Conjuring it Bathsheba making moms sacrifice their kids, in Chapter 2 Bill Withers and Valak threaten children of Peggy Hodgson, La Liorona we see also the sacrifice of children. Valak himself ,the demon, is portrayed as a child riding a dragon. The threat toward children triggers a response in all of us and the director does an excellent job of putting the watcher in parents "shoes" in the movie. I can't help but be reminded of my own childhood, taking and making "dares" to my childhood friends, poking fun at things like "bloody Mary", ghost and demons. The whole idea of waiting 12 years is basically enough time for demon, who has been called or conjured unknowingly by a person dabbling in things they know nothing about to wait for the most opportune time to begin to oppress and invest a life. The longer it waits the better its chances of succeeding. Humans have short memories and are the worst for being curious about the unknown especially as children.

While I am no fan of the first Annabelle, they did explain that the doll herself was not possessed. She was more of a conduit for evil/demons. The fact that any entity that wants into this realm can come through her is what makes her creepy. Malthus is the demon that came through. I actually liked that concept. We've already seen tons of "evil dolls/toys" movies. I think they were trying something different. However, I do agree that because it was rushed, the execution wasn't that great. On the other hand, Annabelle Creation was the better movie. I didn't expect much after the first film, so I was pleasantly surprised and genuinely frightened by how good it was. And when you think about it, it actually made sense what was happening in Annabelle Comes Home when pretty much every evil entity in their locked room came through once Annabelle was released from the cabinet. Besides, they had already hinted at Judy Warren inheriting her mom's gift in The Conjuring 2 when she was seeing Valak/The Nun walking around their home. It all makes sense! Also, weren't you paying attention to anything? In Annabelle Creation, there was no mystery as to why the demon was in the house 12 years later. They explained that! Samuel Mullins was the doll maker who created Annabelle in memorial to their deceased 7-year-old daughter, so they actually INVITED what they thought was their daughter's spirit to live permanently inside the doll. After they found out they had invited in an evil entity, they thought it was just best to contain the evil so no one else would experience what they had. That made sense since The Warrens keep cursed artifacts in their home for the same reason. That's why they used tons of Bible scriptures to keep the demon at bay. It wasn't until the little handicapped girl released it that she became the next target. Primarily, because her spirit was already broken by her disability and she couldn't fight back, which I thought was even more evil to pick on someone who doesn't get around very well. But hey, they're demons, that's what they do! Plus, they already explained that The Curse of LA Llorona was not part of the original franchise, but it was shot in a different universe on a different timeline, which was the movie "fad" so to speak. These films are shot in alternate universes all the time. It's usually when they want to talk you into ignoring all the sequels within a franchise and rewrite the story. I do think it should be treated as a standalone film in case they wanted to add to that timeline, but I don't think they will since it did perform poorly. I think it was because it didn't have James Wan. That was the mistake! At any rate, the explanations were there. You just missed some things. That's all!

Great video!! I agree almost exactly with your ratings, but I actually really liked Annabelle Comes Home. The Conjurverse is by FAR the best horror franchise ever made. Period.

I actually really enjoyed the curse of La Llorona. Loved that it utilized Latin American folklore rather than a traditional Judea Christian concept of a ghost story or Demonic possession. But your opinion is your opinion man, and I respect that. Also this movie is definitely conjuring universe as father Perez makes an appearance and references Annabelle.

I didn't think the nun was too bad, the over reliance on the jumpscares is a little annoying but I still enjoyed it mostly. I just hope if they make a sequel they learn from the flaws of the first and take the strengths to make a better film. I will say that some of the scares are pretty good and the nun is my favorite character in the franchise.

It was a complete hoax. The kids came out a few years ago and admitted that it was all faked. And in real life, Ed and Lorraine was there for like 8 hours and was kicked out.

Ed and Lorraine actually didn’t play a big role. They were there for only about 2 weeks and as the family said, they made it worse for them. Kinda weird lol

They also weren’t “Called upon”, or contacted in any way. They showed up themselves all on their own, and routinely did that in their “cases”.

Might make you even more disappointed to know that right before their passing, a LOT of the families sued them for making them believe their children were possessed, when in reality it was mental illness. The haunting in Connecticut was just a boy with schizophrenia, and with proper treatment and meds pretty much loved a normal life

My favourite movie ever is Annabelle: Creation. I can see why others don't really like it though. I love the way that the characters can be actually smart in it, and I love Janice and Lindas friendship. I also think that it was a great way to explain the Annabelle storyline. The way that it is more colourful compared to the rest of the movie also somehow has a factor to it for me. I think the main reason I like it though, would just have to be nostalgia. I'm young but when I was younger, about 7-8 years old, was when I first watched it. My family was always horror fans so I was watching horror movies at about 3 years old so I didn't scream or anything, but it was one of the first horror movies that actually scared me. I'm also Autistic so I struggle with change and continuously watch the same movies or shows over and over again. So when I first watched it I watched it over and over and over again. It was the first in the conjuring universe that I watched, which made me disappointed when I watched Annabelle. I was super excited for Annabelle Comes Home but was disappointed by that too. But the Conjuring movies were not disappointing at all and I loved them. The conjuring 2 is definitely a close second.

I saw "The Nun II" yesterday so coming across this video last night was timely. I appreciate all of the tie-ins and I didn't know about "The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It" so I'm looking forward to finding and watching that installment. In all honesty, I wasn't impressed with "The Nunn II" and thought it was pretty lame, relying on a few jump scares that I could easily see coming. Not a whole lot of mystery to this one, just scares for the sake of scares. I'd be interested in hearing your review.

A convenient thing the Conjuring movies have left out is how abusive Ed was towards Lorraine. He would cheat on her, and even have one of his side chicks move into his home with Lorraine. Plus, Ed Warren was no Patrick Wilson. It's like if they cast Brad Pitt to play Big Ed from 90 Day Fiancé.
