I can’t find any footage of the explosion. It’s hard to believe this hotel didn’t have any working cameras aimed at the aquarium.

London did it with more class in 1814, when a brewery vessel broke, taking others with it. The flood of beer, up to 1.4m l and 3.5m high, left 8 dead immediately, and more from alcoholic intoxication afterwards.

@@billhuitson5208 Indeed. The area affected was Irish, and portrayed by Hogarth in his print Gin Lane. Five of the dead were in the cellat of a house opposite, out of their noddles after a wake for a two year-old who'd died the day before. However, this was slightly earlier, Regency rather than Victorian times - Victoria was born five years later.

Thanks Rahere, that’s very interesting but tragic, my mum told me a similar story , I think it was where she lived in Leeds during ww2 where people who were sheltering underground were killed when a vat of hot liquid toffee was hit and flooded the shelter.

Why must there be an aquarium with tropical fish in a hotel? When are people going to learn that animals are NOT for entertainment? These fish would have been much better off where they came from, and free. Shame on this hotel, for unethical practices!

It does seem a bit odd for it to fail like that. Surely it would have been laminated glass? That is allot of weight of water though. One little crack created when installing it would eventually fail.

Maybe if the hotel had baths in the bathrooms and a swimming pool people could've got together to save some. But there's too many NPCs nowadays and the media isn't even reporting on who was at the scene at time and their reactions and escape experiences (edit: I found out that it happened to happened at a quiet time around 5am - two people injured but don't have details).. I hope they're in fish heaven now thinking about their days in an aquarium.
