How can we better protect ourselves from incorrect diagnoses our treatment. After a year of pain, I figured out that during an Invisalign treatment gone wrong with my previous dentist - she had shifted a crown in my mouth and it was now hitting incorrectly. When I told her there was a problem, she never checked my bite. She told me Botox will help. It didn’t. I saw a TmJ specialist / orafacial pain. She never checked my bite for inferences or prematurities. I suffered through splint treatment that didn’t fully resolve pain because every time I took the splint out to eat, the bite was off because of the crown. She said this may be the best we can do. 😢. I hurt my hip (luckily) and was put on strong muscle relaxers. This relaxed the jaw and the crown not placed correctly was obvious. I went to my new dentist. He did a bite check, fixed the crown and one other prematurity. In just 10 days 75% of the pain gone. Given it was a year - the dentist said there could be damage/ I may have pain that will happen. How can we make sure that dentists check this? So many professionals - so much money - so much pain and ongoing damage, for something that could have been avoided if when I first said there was pain, my dentist checked my bite.

I’m concerned that TMD due to poor dental work or incorrect protocols on checking the bite wasn’t part of your list. Sadly, situations like this do cause TMD and if a dentist is unaware and the patient (rightfully doesn’t know) it causes a lot of pain

@@vidhyaravi200 dental work altering the bite - that alone does not cause TMD. It can exacerbate an underlying issue. That’s why I didn’t include it on this list.

@@theTMJdoc isn’t it worth saying that? I never had TMD before and now mine is going away once the crown was adjusted. Doctors not checking the bite early on lead to things getting worse than they needed to be. Even just saying this could make things worse may help one person know go and insist on getting your bite checked if you had recent dental work. I wish someone had told me that - I had to figure it out.

This can correct with TMJ orthotic therapy. However sometimes braces or bite adjustment are needed after that. Exercises will not help.

Have you encountered disk displacement without reduction occuring only at night where eventually the disk can be reduced in the morning and the jaw has normal operation, without clicking, throughtout the day? If so, do you find any commonality between cases (for example mainly attributable to muscle imbalance)? Thanks again!

Hi Priya, Thanks so much for your informative videos. I was wondering whether you could recommend a TMJ dentist in the Reno, Nevada area? I am currently shopping around between a few TMJ dentists, to have an orthotic created. The first dentist (from a TMJ/sleep center) quoted a price of $7500, to have a day and night time orothic made. Does this seem excessive, in your opinion? Thanks again for all that you do!

Hi Priya, hope you are checking on these comments. You replied to one of mine in the past and I am hoping you will see this. In this video you talk about cervical vertebrae being rotated. I had a chiropractor tell me my C2 was turned in comparison to C1. In the last 1.5 years or so I have had 2 teeth (molars 18 and 14) extracted on the same side. Do you think the bite change from the extractions can effect the C2 to be turned or would you say it is more likely that the C2 turned is causing my TMJ issues? Thank you for these videos.

"Hello, I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share with you some concerning symptoms I've been experiencing since an accident I had in 2021. Initially, I didn't feel much, but around 5-6 months later, while sleeping on my left side, I suddenly felt pain in the left side of my collarbone accompanied by dizziness, numbness, and blurry vision, which lasted for about 15-20 minutes. Recently, I've been having severe vertigo, depression, anxiety, and stomach problems, which I believe might be related. I understand seeking medical help can be daunting, but I'm feeling quite anxious about it. Could you please offer some guidance or support on how I can best address these issues? Thank you."

Hi, Priya Mistry! Do you know the relationship between TMJ problems and Eagle syndrome? I was diagnosed with disc displacement with reduction and Eagle syndrome. I used to feel severe pain in the neck, masseter muscle, and in the TMJ. After I started treatment with TMJ orthotics, the pain in the TMJ and masseter has improved significantly, but I felt no improvement in the neck pain due to Eagle syndrome. Do you treat this condition in your office? Is there a non-surgical approach for it? Thank you very much for all your content! It has helped me a lot!

Hello, I’ve had my daytime orthotic for almost 3 weeks to correct my joint/jaw placement and I’ve noticed slight muscle twitching, tingling and soreness. It’s nothing extremely discomforting, but it can be noticeable. Is this normal and part of the process? I’m assuming this is because my jaw is getting put into its correct position and my muscles, jaw, etc. are getting used to and adjusting to it.

I’m sorry but I really cannot comment because I have no idea how this orthotic was made, what precise condition it’s treating or the prescription built into it. I’d recommend speaking with your TMJ dentist.

hi Dr Priya, I saw a TMJ dentist earlier this year becuase my jaw locked and I was in a ton of pain - they had me wear two splints, a day time one all day even while eating and a night time one. My TMJ symptoms are gone but I have weaned off the day time retainer and my bite is off - only my back molars touch. my dentist said this should correct itself on its own - do you know anything about this? and how likely this is? I am happy to be out of pain but now so worried about my bite and future problems
@theTMJdoc
@theTMJdoc 4 ай бұрын
The bite may self correct and it may not. It’s impossible to say what the likelihood of either scenario is. Many people move on to phase 2 TMJ treatment - braces or full mouth reconstruction to build a balanced bite.

@@theTMJdoc interesting! I've found plenty of information online regarding how splints can "permanently" change a bite, but I haven't been able to make sense of how or why this happens. if the splints cover all the teeth so they can't move, how would a change in the bite be permanent? my bite pre-splint had good occlusion and my joints were in a fine position - my symptoms were primarily from clenching and muscle tightness. how can a bite change be permanent if the teeth dont move?

I told the oral surgeon about the spams and he's like that's because of your bite being off. He's like you just need braces. I went to my previous orthodontist and he was like how weird but he thinks they are the retainers and I was just biting down on them at night so I'm not wearing them for two months to see how that goes. I'm only biting on one tooth on my left side and one tooth on my right. Have you seen anyone?? My left side pops to buy everything came out in the MRI in place so idk.
