The History of Dorako | Ultraman Kaiju Profile Bio

Ultraman (1966) introduced so many iconic monsters... Dorako AKA Draco is one of them. In this video, the Toku Professor covers this winged (well, at least half of the time) kaiju's complete history, beginning with Ultraman Ep. 25 "Mystery Comet Tsuifon" all the way up to the Ultraman X Series, which is the last time this monster showed up in a major show. Toys, minor appearances and more are covered as well.

I did mention, one time, that Mirror Man, was similar to Ultraman in a way because he fights Kaijus. I did not know about that guy until I learned about him and the kaijus that appear in that series by Alien Klaten. The other Ultraman like heroes are Fireman and Gridman! I will be looking forward for more kaiju/kajin bios in the future!

Wow, i never know that Dorako actually exists first before Gigan, the space Kaiju from Godzilla franchise. Coincidentally, both Dorako and Gigan have hooks and both of them come from space. 9:32 I want to think that the in universe lore is that Geronimon's ability to ressurect kaiju is slightly off when it comes to space creatures, because they aren't native to earth. It would explain why Dorako was slightly different from his original appearance. It was made to be more native to earth than it actually was.

I love all Dorako's design (except for the Redman version), the Re-Dorako design was supposed to replace Red-King, so I think the design gave him horns to make a crown. My favorite version is Powered Dorako, his intimidating Grim-Reaper like design, op abilities and actually beat both Red-King and Ultraman, it took both Winners and Ultraman combine effort to beat him, and leaving an impact even in death, I know Ultraman the ultimate hero is a low-bar, but Powered Dorako is definitely a great stand out in that show.

I have never been the biggest Ultraman fan ..well, after ultra q and the first series, that is. But these bios have definitely made me want to watch them in order. I was raised with Godzilla first, and I knew who Ultraman was early on. I even got in to the early 90s Australian series (Majaba was awesome!). But Spectreman came before Ultraman for me, since it came on at 7am, whereas Ultraman came on at 530 am before school. Keep in mind I was only six at the time. I was kaiju crazy, too. So I'm not sure as to why Ultraman didn't pique my interest. I mean, I knew Eiji Tsuburaya created the series and all, and I would willfully watch ANY Toho film. However, I just wasn't impressed with the kaiju for some reason. And I still don't understand why I prefer Spectreman over Ultraman, since Spectreman was VERY low budget, and many of it's kaiju were .....I dunno......hokey as well. BUT, when the kaiju and the action DID gel for me.... it was AWESOME. Spectreman really could kick ass. I'm assuming the dude playing him had legit martial art skills...another passion of mine. Ok.....back to the Prof and his content! What I'm saying is...well....thank you for getting me interested in monsters again. I have much content to browse now!! Post Scriptum...you gotta admit....Spectreman's English theme rocks WAAAAY harder than any other superhero series does. Even the Japanese theme music is catchy as hell!!

My head cannon is that Dorako undergoes a sorta metamorphosis when it’s wings get pulled off. It grows hands and horns, as well as a more aggressive attitude. This helps Dorako survive whatever planet it’s stranded on.

Any chance of some Spectreman stuff? That was my favorite suitmation growing up, i even... tactically requisitioned... the flight fins from my grandfather's Chitty-chitty, Bang-Bang! 1:18 scale kit for very primitive cosplay [they were the perfect size for 5-8yo me's arm-blades]. Looking it up again for the first time in over 30 years, I was pleasantly surprised to learn of the environmental message of the show [basically what if every Ultra-Kaiju had Hedorah the Smog Monster's origin]. i'd love to hear your take on it. Personally due to localization timing in Chicago, I grew up thinking Ultraman was a Spectreman knock-off [I held the same views of Robotech vs Macross, as Robotech was on Syndication in Chicago long before Toonami brought the barely older Gundam Wing, so to me Gundam is a Robotech KO]

When I was a kid powered dorako was one of the coolest kaiju for me. It had an imposing yet elegant figure, and the scene with red king established its lethality yet gracefulness. Now with this dissection of the series I have actually come to love it even more. I mean, the rest of the show is meh, but that episode, and especially dorakos first appearance against red king still sticks with me all these years later.
