I don't understand why many folks see barring execution being more civilized. I believe the execution of criminals respects the gravity of heinous crimes and the sanctity of the lives of victims. Many have asked if execution is an effective deterrent to future crime. It does not matter. Justice is not primarily about deterrence of other crimes. Justice is punishing crime appropriately. Deterrence is a noble goal, but deterrence is not equivalent to justice. Justice must be primary, then deterrence can be considered. If we can properly execute justice AND deterrence simultaneously, then great, but if only one can be done, justice is necessary. Deterrence can be a work done by law enforcement rather than the courts.

If you support the death penalty you have to accept that innocent people will be executed. If that's a price you're prepared to pay, remember that it makes *_you_* a murderer.
@stuckerfam Жыл бұрын
@davidhoward4715 What about potentially innocent prisoners? I am guessing you are an advocate of holding convicted criminals for some length of time in prisons. Since people like me, who believe in allowing governments--by due process--to execute especially heinous criminals, are "murderers," then by the same logic, you are a human trafficker for promoting the imprisonment of potentially innocent convicts. By your deduction, everyone who approves of any punishment is an unjust offender of that punishment. If you believe in arrests, then you are a kidnapper because even the best police will inadvertently arrest innocent people. If you believe in fines, then you are a thief because innocent people will be fined. If you believe in community service, then you are a slave holder because innocent people will be sentenced to community service. If you support any war (even the most just), then you are a war criminal and also a murderer because noncombatants are killed in every war. If you believe that police should be able to use force when they make arrests, then you are a violent criminal and again a murderer, because imperfect cops can kill an innocent person in the messy process of a confusing arrest. If any action you approve of the government taking ever accidentally or incidentally leads to a miscarriage of justice, then you are the commiter of that miscarriage. If you have ever voted, then every action taken by that politician that led to anything wrong was also committed by you. You are not only a human trafficker, a kidnapper, a thief, a slave holder, a war criminal, a person of violence, and a murderer, but due to your approved government's action (and potential errors) you are also an abortionist if you approve of abortion, a liar if you approve of public education (which can err), a torturer if you believe in public healthcare provisions (which can mistajenly give chemo or other terribly difficult treatments), and a child abuser if your government's social work departments ever miss an abuser. You are a rapist if an innocent prisoner is raped in prison. Unless you are the most morally virtuous person and only ever do good and only to the right person and only for the right purpose, AND you are a full anarchist who approves of nothing an imperfect government could ever do, then you are a perpetrator of every failure that you ever gave tacit approval to. You can not logically accuse someone who approves of the death penalty of murder if you are not willing to accept the guilt of the miscalculation of anything you believe in. Your faulty logic does not work if applied to other government actions, so it obviously does not apply to people who believe in the death penalty. Just as you are not a war criminal or a rapist, neither am I a murderer.
@stuckerfam Жыл бұрын
@seanpadgett3053 This is precisely what I was referring to: a view of being "civilized." You perceive yourself as one promoting a better society that would never execute a heinous criminal. Since you saw a lack of due process in far-off lands, then do you oppose the execution of a person in a system that does more to ensure due process? Is your problem with the death of the person or the lack of due process? You say it's not only due to the lack of a fair legal process but also due to execution being "barbaric." Do you approve of legal abortion? This act is obviously barbaric (the child receives no pain relief as he or she is dismembered in the womb), so does legal abortion have a place in your civilized society? Would you approve of the abortion of an unbirn child diagnosed with Down's Syndrome? Barbarism exists in some fairly obvious ways in modern cultures. Do you approve of the euthanasia of the physically or mentally ill? I understand some Catholics who oppose the death penalty are at least consistent in their view, holding to philosophically and ethically consistent positions against abortion and euthanasia, too. Nonetheless, most people who oppose the death penalty are actually FOR abortion and euthanasia. Most cultures for most of human history have viewed murder as an act in which the murderer surrenders one's right to life in the taking of another. This is how precious another life is. It is precious to the point that if one maliciously takes an innocent person's life, then one gives up one's own life. It is a terribly uncivilized culture that would refuse to honor the life of the innocent victim while it intentionally keeps the murderer safe, fed, healthy, and even entertained.

@@stuckerfam Abortion is a totally different subject and one I’m not going to debate. I will however make an observation based on those right wing pretend Christian nut jobs in the USA, who are against anything that could hurt unborn babies but don’t have an issue with them being born so they can be slaughtered in school mass shootings while they offer nothing but “thoughts and prayers”. Some good photos and footage however the photo you show at 6:42 is misleading. I think it's of Ploetzensee, in any case an old Nazi Germany execution chamber, hence the nooses. Hanging was not a method of capital punishment in the GDR (East Germany) although it was applied until 1949 in the west which was under military occupation, including west Berlin, before the Federal Republic was formed and the Grundgesetz (something like a constitution) outlawed it. In the GDR until 1968 the method was Fallbeil (guillotine) and thereafter by ''unerwartete Genickschuss'' which means ''unexpected shot to the back of the head''. Although it wasn't officially abolished until 1987, the last execution was in 1981. The photos you show of the exterior are indeed accurate and are of the ''Zentrale Hinrichtungsstaette'' in Leipzig, which means ''central execution place''. However prisoners were not held there prior to their execution but driven there on the day of their execution. It was a converted concierge flat on the edge of the prison. There are a couple of MDR (German TV channel) documentaries about the Zentrale Hinrichtungsstaette in Leipzig where you can see the interior, obviously without guillotine as it had been removed in 1968. There's also a German film about the case of Erwin Hagedorn, a child murderer who was executed by pistol shot there in 1972, which shows what the procedure would have been. The film is called ''Mord im Eberswalde''.
@touranzohdy2861 Жыл бұрын
The guillotine picture doesn't match the narrative. The commentator states that the guillotine was in an execution chamber whereas the here it is clearly outdoors. Also the way people are dressed does not look like they're in 1964.
