Canada by contrast often apologizes for its mistakes, undermining said exceptionalism. Most countries don’t do that. Looking at Russian or American exceptionalism of “we are the best country on the planet” is rather different then most counties exceptionalism of “our country does some select things better than all/most other countries”. A running saying up here is: Canadians are satisfied as long as they are above the bar set by the US. Québec is satisfied as long as they are above the bar set by the ROC. When the US started to legalize weed, we (Canada) didn't like being behind so we finally got our shit together. When another province passed a single payer system, we (Québec) had our set up faster than the other one could get challenged in court. In both population, we have a huge contingent that is satisfied with the mediocrity of "at least we aren't them." It is very paralysing for any positive change.

I disagree. If Canadians only wanted to be above the bar set by the US, then we would have just let Conservatives privatize all essential services and just tried to be a little better than the US. "and we continue to ignore the terrible economic problems of indigenous people.” This is a very complicated issue (and yes the canadian government doesn’t help a lot of the time) but the issue is that many of these chefs are corrupt and pocketing the money and funds, other gorups want less government involvement and the ability to run and operate their own autonomous group others will take billions from the government, claim they are getting nothing and no ones helping them and then pocket the money and not spend it themselves on infrastructure and instead want the federal to fund the whole thing as well as upon giving them money. and then yes there are actual issues where the provincial and federal institutions are not doing their job or having trouble implementing these things and that should be viewed and addressed.

@Tman the pseudo Philosopher @mrbeast85 I mean deep down I’m a revolutionary socialist, but that’s just not an avenue we have the means of going down atm so focusing on reform while still being heavily critical can actually make improvements to people’s lives in the mean time. All the while radicalizing people and pushing things further and further left. Calling for revolutionary action is easy to do on twitter but it accomplishes nothing rn. Even if someone started one the fascists and military would wipe the floor with us and our relatively low numbers and largely untrained population. Just because someone is in favor of reforms doesn’t mean they’re not a socialist. I think we also need more organized direct action but there are limits on what we can actually achieve. Sabotaging exploitative or environmentally disruptive operations in minecraft would definitely do something but beyond that and lots of labor strikes (which are extremely hard to coordinate and motivate people to participate in) we don’t have a lot of options until we get larger numbers.

Atlantic Canadian here, living in the GTA in my early 30s. Canada has been having this disillusioned view of itself for as long as ive been alive. I always see Canada tag teaming with the US in horrible shit since the Iraq days, but people always like to brag and tout how great Canada is. It never stuck well with me, and from the 2000s to now it seems to have never changed, despite hardships and problems we still face. It makes discussion for improvements or reforms far more difficult when in the proxy of the US because Canadians will always revert to "Well, atleast we arent as bad as the US." Its infurating. I had to bridge the Trudeau discussion from beginning to end to help them realize just how bad Trudeau's actions have been.

It’s not even true, Greece (more precise Athens) was the actual oldest democracy in the world (it founded democracy) that being said while we’re not perfect and can be and should be far better here in Canada i felt most of Vaush's arguments were barley researched, barely informed and just more reactionary hinged ranting takes than reality. The emergency measures act actually was written with oversight written into it. Again the Brian Mulroney government that created it, was so hesitant to write the law that they literally ensured it that it has imbedded and inherent oversight and regulatory ability woven into every aspect it Not only does the government have to have multiple hearings before the other parties in parliament to justify this, but a mandatory investigation and independent review of the cause, justification, and etc of the government in enacting the act occurs right away The fact that Vaush ranted like this is verbatim the patriot act which itself has no oversight and or any regulatory aspects written into it at all shows how lazy and fucking stupid the progressive left are when it comes to this subject Also Vaush clearly knows nothing, The Canadian civil rights commission literally launched a lawsuit against the government and called for an investigation of why they enacted the act, and they might actually win it if the government cannot prove sufficient means to have enacted this. if they win the courts can overrule the measure act because it did not meet the criteria required to enact it so yes you can sue the fucking government over it. and Yes actually the people of Ottawa do matter, and were a factor in it’s passing not solely the economic issue (the trucks blocking the bridges and major trade and trucking routes had already been cleared, it was downtown Ottawa that was blocked off and shut down) Ottawa, Ontario and etc are among one of the major provinces and city areas that guarantee a party the election If you lose Ottawa and Ontario your party will never be elected. Not pissing them off is key to that goal.

Save the “white guilt like self hate, it doesn’t suit the north strong and free. We’re not angels here in Canada, and anyone who thinks so should be put in their place, but we’re fast tracked better than most and especially better than the US on a lot of issues, including trying to fix our mistakes (even though yes we keep making them), and while we can and need to be better, we aren't shameful. First off, Vaush doesn't even pretend to look up the fact that these measures cannot be activated willy nilly, it requires full support from the leading party and the Provinces therein in which it’s activated and there is a mandatory inquiry/investigation afterwards by the review and independent boards of Canada, as well as a justification hearing that the government has to do with the rest of the elected parties to prove the need to use this. This means that nothing can be done in secret, the government and thus the media will be informed because it is mandatory and necessary to do so which defeats the notion Vaush was putting out that these “silent” freezing of assets was covert the freaking government had to publicly and did publicly say they would be doing this, As well, It is literally something that is so unprecedented that it has cost a to of politcall good will and poll points with Canadians to have enacted it and further more the multiple mandatory investigations and regulatory procedures built into it cannot be shut down and or ignored. this is not something that you can just snap your fingers any time you please with no long term consequences, and it has a lot of regulatory measures that have to be followed, UNLKE the fucking patriot act which requires no oversight, no hearings and absolutely no justification to or for anyone so SPARE ME Vaush about the similarities between Canada and the US big brother bullshit as for fucking precedents... we’re really lucky, we’ve had only two incidents in the last 50-60 years where the “military” or some form of martial law. war measures and or emergency act has been implemented, and in each time it was in response to a terrorist political party kidnapping and murdering an elected official and a literal mohawk “rebellion” that the Quebec provincial police couldn’t handle on their own. this act has never been used against working class and or working poor at all because it was never intend to and our governments have to actually follow these codes because at least most of our people actually give a shit.

As a Canadian, I can absolutely confirm a pervasive attitude of "Canada can do no wrong", though in my experience this is more prevalent in the older generations. My only disagreement with Vaush here is that it doesn't seem (From what I've seen, at least) clear exactly what orders Trudeau has given to banks regarding the finances of people associated with the protests. I may have missed something, but I've only been able to find vague press summaries, and no specifics. If Vaush's interpretation of the orders given is accurate, them I'm absolutely in agreement: It's a shameful display, it's incredibly dangerous, and it would be quite literally less egregious to have the police roll into the protest, black bag every last person there, and throw them in a hole for 30 days. At least that way you'd know you were only getting people who were physically present, as opposed to just.. Leaving it in the hands of banks to decide from afar who is and isn't associated enough to have their access to money cancelled, with literally no oversight or recourse for those affected. That said, it may be possible that the actual orders given to banks are more specific (Targetting, for instance, only accounts that have transfered exceptionally large amounts or act as intermediaries for a large number of other accounts, or if they only disable the ability to transfer money between accounts and not in-person debit or credit card usage, etc. etc.), in which case I *somewhat* disagree with Vaush's assessment, though without oversight (Due process, etc.), protections against extreme harm (Ensuring the affected won't, you know.. Starve to death because no money, and the like), and a means of legal recourse if they feel they've been wrongfully targeted, then it's still an abysmal decision, and one that unironically makes me ashamed of my country.

It's a slippery slope fallacy. This is not a piece of new law that extends permanent powers (see the Police and Crime Bill in the UK for a slice of that yikes) its an extension of time limited emergency powers which are tightly delineated and require the consent of Parliament to activate. The law was already there and could have been exploited by a right-wing government against a left-wing protest anyway. Vaush also seems to be thinking about this in the abstract without paying any attention to the logistics of trying to use this law more often. As pointed out Vaush's preferred political stance would involve an expansion of government and/or state power and the same arguments could be deployed against that position. In fact they are, all the time, by opponents of socialised health care and even the mildest of gun control measures in the US.

That rant Vaush had at @44:15 to 47:10 was straight fire. Made me think of the sentiment MLK expressed in his letter from a Birmingham jail: "First, I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of goodwill is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection."

The Emergency Act is not martial law. The Canadian Charter and Bill of Rights. Not only that, but it has accountability in the House of Commons, the Senate, and the Supreme Court of Canada. Not to mention Canada has a minority gov't right now. The Emergency Act was needed because the police, and provincial and federal gov'ts failed to act right away. That said, hindsight is 20/20. Once the bridge was blockaded and there was no end in sight with the Ottawa situation something had to be done. It was a very unique situation and the Liberals gov't will be held accountable if the legal standard wasn't met. Even if the legal standard was met the electorate will also pass judgement at some point. Though, there are a lot of Canadians who agree it was necessary.

I have a friend who was in the military and he used to always side with police whenever an unarmed black person was killed by a cop and it led to protests and riots. His reasoning always depended on an assumption that cops were like the military; that his experience, training, and culture was the same the police, so he gave them the benefit of the doubt. Why was it always black people getting shot? It was racist policies, not racist police. They were just doing their jobs. But as smartphones and such made police brutality more visible and undeniable, his attitude started to change. He would see cops panic and open fire in situations that he personally had been in, but managed to resolve without even touching his firearm; where cops prioritize their own personal safety over the safety of the people they are supposedly there to protect. By the time the George Floyd murder happened, my friend had done a complete 180°, and he now regards cops as cowardly racist babies who shit their pants whenever they see a dark skinned person. Obviously, military occupations are still bad. This isn't a point about how good the military is, but about how bad the police are. They're even more trigger happy than the people who have been occupying Iraq and Afghanistan for the past two decades. As ironic as it may seem, I trust the military to not kill civilians more than I trust the police.

A small tip that will help anyone in life. Never donate money to anyone online, 10usd to get a tiny bit of attention from a streamer is not worth it.
