As an American I can tell you it's pretty disgusting. Lots of political posturing about transportation. But not one finger lifted to make emissions free (ish) miles work. And LA is in one of the most temperate regions of the country. Locally I've been waiting on the planned expansion of a bike/pedestrian route into the nearest city. 9 years later and it's not done and you ride a tight rope on the chewed up white line while being nearly missed by angry drivers. I hope VC and JB make it safely to the next race.

So from long beach you could have taken the river path northbound and ripped that up, snaked your way through LA River then heading westboand through the valley... were you guys planning on going up Topanga Canyon from the PCH? I'm lost how you ended up going through LAX...

The tunnel under lax is scary. If (heading north) you make a left on imperial highway, right on Pershing, then a right on Culver, then a final left on Lincoln (pch) you can go along the back side of the airport without risking your life!

God I miss being stationed at Pendleton. Use to ride out the Oceanside gate, jump on Carlsbad Blvd and then SCH 101 past Encinitas and ride to Mission Beach. Used to think ~40mi was something crazy on the bike, oh man, how much I had to learn.

Riding on the shoulder of the 5 through Camp Pendleton isn't that bad. Seems sketchy but I actually prefer it to riding through the actual base. It's definitely faster with fewer hills and the effective tailwind generated by all the cars passing by.

Riding the coast through LA to SD is, by far, the worst section of the entire West Coast bike route. I did Canada to Mexico years ago and once you get to Long Beach it's garbage riding for a long while. Then amazing, then garbage through Pendleton (literally riding on I-5 is the only option) and National City to the border is garbage (but you started North, so that you happily missed). North of LA is all awesome riding. At least you got the worst riding out of the way to start!
