For me, the definition of masculinity is an impulse to protect. Masculine men defend and protect their families, their spouses (of either gender) and the weak and defenseless. By that standard, I find it infinitely more masculine to protect a baby cow or bunny than to eat one.

I guess, but by that standard, most females of other species are more masculine then the males. Hell, male lions often kill the young baby males since they're competition for mating. I think what you're trying to get at with reference to humans being protective is refereed to as tribalism. Which isn't always bad, but can exploited by others via propaganda, as many nations have done in the past when they send men into war where they think they're fighting for their families, but the reality can differ drastically. Remember, no one in war ever thinks they're the bad guys. Being a "good man" or a "good woman" seems like a distraction IMO. It's probably more pragmatic to say "be a good person".
@amandajmb6228
@amandajmb6228 6 жыл бұрын
I basically agree that being a good person is vastly more important than being a good man or a good woman. Let me elaborate slightly. When I was a young woman I was attacked. My girlfriends gathered around to comfort me. My guy friends went on the warpath. That experience shaped my opinion some. I do think that in our society, whether by nature or nurture, men and women tend to react a little differently when someone they care about, or someone they perceive as a member of their group, or someone that needs protection is threatened or hurt (this is not to say that women can't be equally fierce, I know we can!) I'm obviously speaking of broad tendencies here, not individuals. The bottom line, for me, is compassion looks good on absolutely everyone. There's certainly nothing emasculating about it. Quite the contrary. Compassion, especially when it means going against the norm, is heroic.
@xenoblad
@xenoblad 6 жыл бұрын
Ok. I'm fine if you think there might be some generalizations at the moment. Idk if looking for the attacker is the wisest thing to do(performing what seems like "vigilante justice" can get you into a lot of trouble). I probably would call the cops and attempt to keep individuals at the scene who could be key witnesses of the attack. Sure sometimes it's necessary to go on a "warpath"(I'm assuming that means using self defense to be charitable), if the situation is drastic, like if the attack is happening in real time. I think we agree on everything else. I'm just a little cynical about masculinity given all the times through out history political opportunists have exploited it to cause massive suffering. So I'll admit, I'm a little biased.

All of you are so lucky to discover veganism before you developed health problems. I went vegan at age 49 when I was obese, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type II diabetes, sleep apnea, IBS and anxiety taking 5 pills a day. That was 5 years ago and now I take no pills and I am healthier than I was 20 years ago. Young adults never imagine themselves growing fat, sick and slow, but it will happen if you eat meat, dairy, eggs and cheese. It will get you... it gets everyone!

Great video! It's a very interesting topic indeed. As a French vegan man, I'm always stunned to see how meat is deeply associated with strength, sexual vitality, fearlessness, etc. On the contrary, veganism is often considered by people as sentimentality, and when you're a vegan man you're exposed to all sorts of homophobic and/or misogynous insults, just because you don't want to eat what is supposed to make you virile. There's also this stupid belief that vegan men are inevitably vegan because of hysterical/dominating/manipulative/emasculating women. When I said to my dad I had become vegan, he even thought it was because of my mum... who is not vegan at all! It reinforced my realization that our fight must be wider... obviously.

I loved this! When I first went vegan my parents were so skeptical, but they didn't stop me because they knew I would want to go vegan even more. After showing my parents that I could be happy and healthy as a vegan, my dad went vegan too. I was so surprised because my dad was a meat and cheese connoisseur. Its been a year since he went vegan and it goes to show that anyone can be vegan.

That is amazing! How did he come to that realization? I'm so curious as I know sooo many people who love their meat and cheese (family and friends)

When I went vegan (for ethical reasons), I didn't try to force it on my parents. I have cooked dinner for my family since I was 8, so I began to make vegan dinner. I didn't stop my parent from eating animal products, but if they wanted them, they had to cook it. At the beginning, they would eat my vegan dinner, but add meat or cheese on the side. After a few weeks, they stopped making animal products to go with my vegan dinner because they my dinners were tasty and filling on their own. Fast forward to January 2016 (8months later)... my dad found out he had high cholestrol. I suggested that he cut out animal products completely from his diet and see if it helped, before taking medication. I helped him veganize his favorite meals and I continued to cook vegan dinners for him. He's been vegan ever since, which really surprised me since he was such a meat and cheese eater. He's vegan for health reasons and i've been slowly showing him the more ethical side of veganism.

Become a vegan animal rights activist by going to some activist events or meetup potlucks. I guarantee you'll meet way more vegans and vegan guys than you thought possible. In any case, the vegan world needs more activists. I like Anonymous for the Voiceless due to its effectiveness in getting people from the non-vegan public to think about the issue. Potlucks are probably better for socializing though.

Every person out there is a potential vegan. I would say just date kind men that want to be better versions of themselves- men who are actively striving to be better humans. The odds are pretty high that if you find a man that is kind and knows he can change for the better (and works on that), you will find a man that can easily become vegan over time. Maybe he isn't vegan yet but he can be in the future. Or... go to vegan events and meet ups and join vegan clubs and don't be afraid to ask people out :)

Awesome video and thanks for addressing this topic! My situation is the opposite, I'm a 34 year old male and went vegan before my wife and 3 kids! I led by example, didn't push anything on them and after 6 months they made the choice themselves and are going on 6 months! Also, I have been into fitness and weightlifting since I was in high school as a full blown omnivore; and this past year I have never felt better in the gym. My recovery time is much shorter and I'm putting up more weight on many exercises than I ever have in the past! Keep bringing the great content and breaking stereotypes!

As a guy, I really don't care about being a good man. Being a good person is all I care about. How people want to arbitrarily label patterns of behavior means very little to me. Give to charity. Be a responsible consumer. Participate in politics. Be a responsible and productive member of society. These are what make a good man, because this is what makes a good person. The gender here is irrelevant. I'm not trying to criticize any of your points per se. I'm just a little off put by topics of masculinity and femininity in general. Cool video though.

Fantastic important topic of discussion ! Men will feel inspired by this. They need to remember that there are many successful strong male athletes that are vegan for years. And a vegan diet can no longer be associated with weakness because it actually increases strength and energy in many people that eat healthy whole foods. Identity politics has socialized into people the idea that men need to eat meat and other animals secretions, which is a complete myth. Protein is found in all plants and we need to work on combating the male carnivore stereotype. Humans are natural frugivores. Our bodies aren't even biologically designed to digest and assimilate flesh and secretions. So carnism is a social construct that patriarchy especially has pressured men to take part in. We can all break free from that culture of animal suffering and animal oppression which is linked with women's oppression. The book The Sexual Politics of Meat by Carol Adams dives into this topic. Fascinating. It would be cool if you made another video discussing the connection between feminism and animal liberation. Both carnism and sexism are rooted in control and power over other groups
