Santana always struck me as such a meta character. It’s like she knew she was a character on a cheesy teen drama. Naya as an actress played this meta piece soooooo well. Like she’s was just so aware of the role, and it flowed to well.

@betulceyhan85192 жыл бұрын
The show’s writers took a lot inspiration of the actor’s real life traits. Like in Glee Project they talked about how if the actor doesn’t inspire them to write then the actor won’t be chosen. So I think the reason for Santana is Naya’s quick wit and sometimes sassiness along with her charisma. She talks about it in her book how in the Pilot she didn’t have any lines but she tried so hard to show her uniqueness that Ryan Murphy chose her for the mean girl group. He probably didn’t get inspired by Diana’s character or maybe he got upset her well manners or something got in the way of her being a villain he discarded her and Santana got the part instead. Naya was just the perfect person for Glee and I dislike Ryan Murphy for letting her down in favour of Lea. Naya and her character were original just like her voice and I’m still amazed how much natural talent and confidence this woman had so young.

I get the feeling that Santana was bullied in middle school too. Santana and Quinn wore their Cheerio uniforms as armor. I also think she may have promiscuous because she thought that one day she might fall in love with one of the guys. Maybe she thought it was a phase just like her Tom boy phase? Santana is just so ultra feminine in the way she dresses that I have a hard time imagining her dressing up as Uncle Jesse. I think her makeup and high heels became sort of her armor too. It made her feel powerful. I also think Santana loved the way Brittany didn’t let this cold miserable get to her. She was like a ray of sunshine.

I will say though, I wish you had talked a little more about Santana and Quinn's dynamic as it's very interesting. They have almost identical motives in many cases, yet, they choose very different approaches to get what they want or to appear powerful. They do backstab each other but when it really counts, they also get each other's motives so well that they end up supporting each other. To me, it appears to be one of the more realistic friendships in Glee because it shows just complex popularity can be. Quinn is also one of the few characters that's never afraid of Santana, which is why I think their dynamic is so interesting.

The reason I personally love her isn't because she's good or bad, it's because she's real. Santana is the most relatable character on the show, not because she's gay but she experiences struggles just like anyone else. She makes selfish decisions just like anyone else but she also looks out for the people she loves at the end of the day. Characters aren't made to be perfect, they are meant to be real. Unlike any of the other self righteous characters on this show Santana knows her flaws and unlike Rachel who did wayyy too much, Santana didn't let her confidence in her talent shine at the expense of her peers. That very raw balance is what makes her such a brilliant character.

About her daddy issues: Okay so first of all, the writing of the show was eitherway a mess. Buut, the part of you saying that she was searching for male attention etc in relationships- that is NOT a stretch. I say this from experience, i personally, as a now lesbian, was constantly trying to seek FEELINGS in hetero relationships. That did come along with a lot of lonelyness, but by the difficulties i had at home personally, i did definetly try to seek more attention. Somehow it just ended up being males due to heteronormativity, so that itself wasn't 'daddy issues' but i was definetly trying to make myself happy as a person, by having relationships. So, what i think could've happened, is that santana kept trying to feel something with having sex and relationships, and once realizing she did finally (kind of) feel something for brittany, she took slow steps towards her. 3 steps back 1 step forward. Fyi: i would love for you to compare ryan's writing vs the others! I'm so curious how the mess of a script became such a mess

@@cnstqnce2841 i completely understand! I currently still have a lot of difficulty with seeing fantasy seperate from reality. My main way: do i ACTUALLY want to be with a male? Not just the dreamy wedding stuff you see in romcoms? No? Okay done. But, due to all the lockdowns i've accidentely gotten that hetero mindset again due to the amount of shows & movies i've watched without LGBTQ+ rep. It's been very exhausting, but i'm happy that on (dutch) netflix the show Anne+ is on it, soo i get to watch LGBTQ+ stuff again! It's a difficult path, but it is worth it for our happiness. I still remember how of a robot i was, searching for guys to date- it was and is disgusting to think like that for you as a person but also for others, it took me 3 years to get it out after having it internalized. I hate how they made Finn the victim of the episode when he was the one who outed Santana. I liked Santana’s coming out story a lot...and then this episode ruined it. I wonder what her coming out would’ve been like if she was the one who chose to do so. I remember talking to some people/reading people’s opinions and they were justifying Finn’s actions by stating that Santana was rude to him before that so that’s what she gets. And I can sorta understand that but outing is most definitely not the way to go. Maybe he could’ve gave her a private warning or something and taught her that she should be more empathetic to his insecurity since he’s sure she wouldn’t want him making fun of hers. Everyone has something they’re dealing with and life would go much better if others didn’t make fun people for it. I also couldn’t stand Mr. Shue in that episode, he suspended Santana for slapping Finn after he outed her. Mr. Shue’s rules are always changing up, he ain’t suspend Finn for fighting Puck or Jesse...but thought this was the best time to do it. I typically don’t agree with the most popular opinion, but Mr. Shue rightfully deserves all of the hate he gets! Many people seem to like Finn’s cover of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, but something about it always rubbed me the wrong way. I’m glad you see how inappropriate it (and I Kissed A Girl) was. They already had Tina sing that song in the first episode, so idk why they felt like it was a great song to do again

I think one of the reasons why people love Santana despite her ruthless remarks is because of Naya Rivera herself. That’s certainly what drew me into Santana. Apart from her humor, and being one of the few people that could put Rachel into her place (even when she’s too far), Naya gave her all portraying Santana. And what’s amazing is she’s soooo far from her character. I know it’s called acting, but it’s not like there are many actors in Hollywood who are as nice as their character anyways lol. Naya was such a joy; she may look “cold” but she has a heart of gold. You never hear the cast complain about her; they loved her the same way they loved Cory and that’s so beautiful. RIP Naya. Santana is definitely one of my favorite characters to ever grace tv screens, and was also a fan favorite. Full credit to Naya Rivera for her beautiful acting and musical performances that managed to capture the heart of Glee . Glee’s decline after season 3 can be attributed to the writers decision to dispose of characters such as Santana, who they had spent years molding into a iconic character. Although she briefly re-emerges during the later seasons it’s apparent the writers were disinterested in allowing Naya/Santana to shine, lest she take away from Rachel’s spotlight. Regardless , what an iconic role !

It’s really insulting to Brittany’s character and role in the relationship to say she was manipulated by Santana in season 2. She knew what she was doing, and to think otherwise is playing into the idea that Brittany was dumb when she wasn’t. Santana impacted me so much and I still strive to be like her (except the backstabbing and negative parts obv) seeing her on the show just always made me happy

I'm really enjoying these videos! I feel like you should do Emma next. Her characters issues were severely mishandled in several instances and I'd like to see your take on it.

I can’t rewatch the coming out episode. It made me so sad and cry as a closeted kid. I can’t believe they made her the villain in her story of being outed. Like I’m fine with them continuing to keep her complicated and being a bully at the beginning, but the fact they made FINN have to forgive HER and not the other way around was disgusting. I only watch it because I love her mash up song because she has an amazing voice.

oh. Now I understand why Ryan kept Santana's character around. He needed Quinn to be the main bitch but Dianna was too sweet for that, so after S3, he thought Santana had what it takes lmao. But it backfired because people still loved her more than Rachel

I really hope you do Finn next because idk who played a bigger part on Santana’s outing than him. And speaking of which, I really love how it’s about Santana when Brittany is the literal other half in the relationship and isn’t given anything except the class election subplot. Jesus Christ, there is no other thing that pissed me off more than Finn not even taking accountability OR APOLOGIZING for being the one to out Santana. And lastly… HOW THE HELL DID HE KNOW IN THE FIRST PLACE?!! I’ve watched the first 3 seasons and not a single hint or scene showed him suspecting Brittana. He literally did a hard read!!

Hi again, I love Santana, she is my favorite character, also Burt Hammel. I think, from my perspective, the writters and producers wanted to show how wrong that point of view from Finn was, because its pretty much what the society push us to believe, also, Santana was the most honest person out there, speaking her point of view, refusing to be deceived and protecting others as much as she could, but anyway, after the damage was done. I feel, as a fan, Rachel got too much attention, despite others being as talented as she was... thanks for your amaising analyses!!!

Back when glee was airing we hated her cos we thought she was being mean to a lot of characters but now things have changed. Glee didn't age well. So many things in that show are questionable. Santana was actually just being honest. She was calling people out for their stupidity. Specially creep like Mr shu who enjoyed watching his student sexy dance in front of him lol.

Uhm antisemtic , biphobic and fatshaming comment are Not being honest in any way
@tamaraortega26893 жыл бұрын
@@laurine____7543 All characters are problematic at some point, I'm surprised people don't get the point of a black humor satire from 10 years ago. Santana's character was always like that and it's okay that they hate her because well, that's the point, her character is a kind of antagonist at some point for the protagonist, so obviously it's going to do all those things.
@laurine____75433 жыл бұрын
@@tamaraortega2689 hum yeah , but it still not just " being honest " and "give at other what they deserve " its mode " being a bully " . What Santana stan ( some at least) dont awckoloege
@aabankhan6473 жыл бұрын
@@laurine____7543 yeah obviously you are right. Glee was a mess but santana was correct most of the time if not always. She called out schue for teaching Spanish when he clearly didn't have any skills or qualifications to do so, etc. Santana was also quite insecure in the begining and used to project her feelings. She had the most amazing character development
@tamaraortega26893 жыл бұрын
@@aabankhan647 Obviously all these things do not justify being a bully but you understand why it is like that, there is a story behind the character.

I love Naya so much, also this was a deep break down loved to hear, Imo the outing of santana was really powerful, and showed fear lgbtq people have to face. Also the creative choices were amazing, the drums when shes running and the silence after mercedes started singing rumor has it focusing on santana, the overall mood through lights zooms, angles, the slap at the end... I do think forcing Santana to participate in the meetings involving women empowerment was awful however she did get support from the club, and I think I kissed a girl is an empowering song, shows pride and equality. Also showing men gawk at her and puck dismiss the situation is insensitive but society isn't either, they showed an honest depiction of how high school students react, Kurt was bullied as well and its relatable. Overall I was moved by the episode ,I also loved Theatricality alot for showing Kurt's dad mature approach and the conflicts between Kurt Fin and Burt leading to acceptance.
