Balanced Lug sail rig setup and test on 20kts gusts!!
Three weeks after my Goat Island Skiff launch I'll show you some mods I made on the boat and rig.
Mounted some cam cleats to bring the control lines aft, added a clamcleat to the tiller to adjust and remove the tiller extension more easily, made some seats with 80mm straps, added an out haul and reefing loops.
Then I took Forager out on a really gusty day! the cameras can't show you how much I had to let that sail luff but believe me I honestly thought that that would be the day of my first capsize!!

Awesome video buddy , I’m seriously thinking of building a dinghy sailor , I have built a canoe and a 13 ft skiff run about , and now I’m getting itchy fingers to start building another boat , I sailed hobbies and laser sailers in my teenage years and love sailing , I like the clinker style boats but is a lot more work with ribs and planking etc , I really want to learn the skill of planking and steaming ribs etc , it’s the craftsman ship I’m looking for and a personal challenge for me , my skiff was a stitch and glue method and fibreglassed inside and out , your boat is a little ripper and gets along fast who knows I may build one like this in the future as well. 👍

Hi Don! Thanks for your comment! Yes I have now extensively tested the lazy jacks. They are probably the best add-on on my GIS! They help when reefing, fishing, beaching and even while running with 30kt winds to fly just a little bit of sail while keeping the boom functional!! The weight of my yard+ boom together make only about 6lbs, even with the sail all bunched up I can swing all of it out to 90 degrees with no problem whatsoever! Good to try (I can see your experimental approach more clearly now - cool) .. when depowering go really hard on the downhaul as first resort. Crazy tight. That will flatten out the top of the sail which is more effective at reducing heel (and drag - pointing angle always relates to drag from flapping or overfull sails) than flattening out the bottom ... of course the time comes when have to flatten out the bottom as well! I'm still not convinced about the halyard cleat. Glad you have the lazyjack cleat on the side of the mast that can be a halyard secondary if ever needed. Was it a pure spectra halyard (no outer) or one with a polyester outer. When I rigged 420s they used a metal Clamcleat CL217mk2 for their halyards they can handle really substantial loads and can take the halyard right out to release. The plastic ones wear out with much load. Combined with a fairlead behind can pull the halyard through the cleat from any point on the boat - as you have done with the outhaul. Great applications of a fixed loop for reefing. The original idea was to allow to change to a shorter footed sail ... but that is brilliant. But not as brilliant as the custom GoPro mounts for the GIS. Really really brilliant. Maybe a show and tell on those .. there are quite a few boats with spacered gunwales!
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback Michael!! Reefing loops: I believe the loop idea for reefing was Joost's, I can't take credit for that! GoPro mount: I'll check if I have any footage of the building process. It's really simple, just 4 pieces of wood and 4 screws... The previous halyard was spectra with no outer. All spectra I have has no outer unfortunately. I can't get Spectra with poly outer anywhere in Portugal!! Downhaul/Outhawl: When I flattened the bottom of the sail I had the downhaul already maxed out. My downhaul is made with 2x double blocks + 1 single. Using 2x triple blocks alone would give me more distance to pull, but I already had those doubles and I don't want to buy any more blocks!!!

Very nice video!! A lot of ideas and reflections on GIS set up. Personally I prefer to avoid lazy Jack as if the wind picks up strong and I need to reef, I prefer to have all the sail inside the hull (no windage). And I really like the camera mount!

Really liked this one, I’ll definitely going to add an adjustable outhaul on my goat, I am struggling a bit to get a nice shape on the sail while reefed. And the lazy jacks looked much more useful than I envisioned it would, might have a go at that as well..

So if I understand correctly, the lazy jacks tighten up as the sail drops, negating the need for a topping lift. Nice. For beaching, you might want to have a boom crutch with optional positioning; port quarter, starboard and center. You'll be able to drop sail and keep the boom from swinging in on people. Just a thought.

Teo great stuff. You are a very competent sailor! When did you even have time to tighten the outhaul in that wind!? During the tack?...ah I see it now! during the tack with the block. You use the Clamcleats from UK? The CF boom seems key...my Spruce boom would be a banana! Also I love the strap seats. I have a large fender for rolling the boat on the beach that I use, but it is only on one side of cockpit.

Hi Clint! Yes I tightened the outhaul mid tack. The clam cleats I already had before from another boat, not sure what brand they are but I'll check next time I go sailing. I had made a wooden boom too but found it would bend too much for a loose foot sail so just used the old windsurf masts to make new carbon spars. Thanks for watching! 😉

using 'normal' rope instead of spectra....I don't use spectra anywhere on my dinghy. Too slippery and its strength is not needed - and if you have tiny lines you can't get a grip on them. Love your videos...thanks
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Gerry! The Spectra halyard is very important on this type of sail. The low stretch line I used here is just satisfactory, but for better performance and/or high winds the Spectra makes a big difference. If the halyard stretches the sail's luff will flap in strong winds so the sail shape and efficiency will suffer as a result. I have since bought spectra with poly outer and it works a treat!! Also on the reefing system Spectra is awesome as I can have really thin lines permanently hanging from the sail. Have a look at the new season rigging setup videos.😉 kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHTYaWVmZdisnck

Nice, I couldn't see the whole sail shape and not familiar with the lug rig, so wondering whether the luff laying off with the leech prevents the peak from twisting off in response to gusts, spilling pressure? That would be a good thing in moderate wind, but not good when overpowered in strong wind gusts. This is of course an important mechanism for modern racing skiffs & the point of their square topped mainsails, just curious how this works with the lug rig.
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ken! I believe the yard was designed to bend and spill wind on the stronger gusts. My setup doesn't have a separate adjustment for Luff and Leech tensions. I can kind of balance how much I want to spread that tension between them but that is it. Some GIS have separate lines to allow for a better control. I don't need it as I don't race my GIS.
@kenwebster5053
@kenwebster5053 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheBoatRambler Yep I understand about not racing. I was just really asking to get an idea how the sail responded to gusts. I only mentioned skiffs to illustrate the importance of twisting off response to gusts to limit heeling moment. You may have seen a confusing reply from me that I have since deleted, I was getting you confused with another video I commented on today. I have often wondered how well the lug rig performs what it's like to manage. I don't think I've ever seen one sailing here in Australia.
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 2 жыл бұрын
hey Ken! No worries mate! This is my first lug sail too and this video was the early days of my GIS. The amount of sail aft of the mast is enough to force some twist regardless of the luff. To be honest whatever wind the sail doesn't spill due to bending of the yard I just react and compensate by easing sheet. It does make the sail luff but it is effective and since I NEVER cleat the mainsheet it is not an issue to me. But in really strong winds the yard bends quite a bit and I can see the leech flapping. I have sailed a lot since I made that video and to me the really big advantage of my setup is the ability to put a reef on in 1 minute, and that is including the time to lower and raise the sail, that way I never have to be sailing overcanvassed. 😉

Hi! Thanks for your input! Some people like to use cam cleats for the mainsheet. I never do as I believe it's a very good way to capsize a small light boat! 😁 As for the tiller extension you are right it could be more rigid but the rudder is so light that if I pull the rope tight it's good enough for me. I don't race! 😎🍸🍹🌴🌞

ola amigo... I may be in Lisbon this summer... what is the best way to get on the Tejo for a sail? I would love a sail on a small skiff like yours....or a traditional Portuguese boat... are there places where I can pay for a sail?
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Paulo, There is no traditional boats to rent with no skipper. You could pay to go on one but it will always be skippered by the owner of the boat. In summer there area a LOT of events for traditional boats, so finding a local skipper free on a weekend is gonna be difficult. There are a couple of Canoas that provide sailing afternoons in Lisbon. Have a look at "Tejo com Vida" As for Skiffs I don't know of any for rent. The only boats for rent, in Lisbon, are cruisers from 20 to 40ft. Once you are here drop me an email and we can always try to find something...or go for a beer! 😉

Do you want flat sails in stronger wind? Do you want more curved, loose, sails in light wind?
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Thomas! Generally speaking, in light air the boat needs all the power available to move forward and it needs to “catch” all the wind available, so the sail shape should be full/deep. In strong winds the boat will have more wind than it can handle so it will start heeling and that slows it down. Going from 5 to 10 kts increases the force on the sail by x 4. Flattening the sail will make it spill wind easier so the boat can be kept leveled and easier to control.

Hello. What is the maximum number of people that can comfortably fit on the boat?
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 2 жыл бұрын
Hi!! It will depend on weather conditions but in general if you want to still go sailing I think two more persons (one on each side of the centercase ) is comfortable enough. If you're motoring, the GIS can take 4 people and gear without a problem. Of course not advisable if it's blowing a gale!! 😉

How fast do you think you were going there?

I might have topped at close to 10kts for brief moments but mostly below that as when the wind increased I was on the way home and beating.

Sorry dude you are a badass sailor. And I mean no disrespect . But that looks like a brand new wood boat. I have seen so many wood boats just ride away. We so need the old technology. In bad way. It's called kiss keep it simple stupid. Is there a chance we can make a boat. Using some sort of composite materials that don't rot. Think about it same beautiful craftsmanship made out of milk jugs water bottles and whatever. Something that don't rot

Hi Nolan! I have no idea what one can use as alternative materials for boat building but one thing I can tell you, if wooden boats are maintained they don't just rot away!! Look on my videos, Princesa do Tejo is 100% wood and she's over 100 years old now! 😉
