The patients aren't abusing the drugs. They are being prescribed and administered them by doctors. The discussion should involve how, why and when physicians are prescribing off label to patients. The influence of the pharmaceutical company that the doctors ALLOW in their offices (because we never, ever learn) has created a system where if a pharma company wants their drug to be approved for an additional purpose, other than what they originally paid research for and applied for, then they enlist doctors to prescribe off label. Now the pharma company is getting paid, instead of having to pay for the information they get from the populace who is providing themselves as guinea pigs. Getting approved for one purpose is cheaper and faster, so get that through first then rake in the cash while the populace proves the other purpose for you.

There is a shame aspect to anything we blame the individual for the condition. I would like such discussions to include the systemic issues particular to the U.S. leading to this epidemic. Which in turn made us have one of the highest death rates from COVID in the world. First, we know now that the food industry has purposely created food products designed to be addictive while providing limited nutritional value. We know that the food industry has fought with millions of dollars to prevent government regulation -- even improving the nutrition information panel, so consumers make more informed decisions. We can't even improve the nutritional profile of school meals without the food lobby bribing politicians to protect their profits. Second, we have a culture that leaves very little time for healthy behavior, such as exercise, quality time with loved ones, and rest. Our worker protections are pretty weak compared to other wealthy nations. Consider how many working Americans have no paid leave (sick, family, or otherwise). Consider the hours many American work to cover daily living costs -- which for a lot of Americans include unsubsidized medical/dental care. If you consider these factors, the health disparities between rich and poor are BY DESIGN. It's beyond genetics (which indeed plays a role, but not as much as we think). The current American system is designed to drive people with lower financial resources to illness (including obesity), while providing people with higher financial resources a much stronger safety net to promote health.

There's always a miracle drug that turns out to have terrible side effects. This story has been told for decades. They are already talking about the terrible side effects of Ozempic. I would personally wait several years for a large body of research to be established on the side effects of using these drugs for weight loss (separate from diabetes, that research is there already from what I understand.)

I highly doubt there will be funding for a study of this medication on the general population for weight loss with so many people gaining the weight back once off the medication, or even more specific unknown variables such as addiction like Alyssa suggested. Those who grant funding for these studies would just be burning money to in the end not be approved. And after what Purdue Pharmaceutical did to get wide spread approval for OxyContin, that can be prescribed for various reasons which has led to the present day rampant fentanyl OD’s, the approval system for a medication such as this has been cracked down (some).

I’m glad that people are finally admitting that weight loss is not easy nor is managing your weight. We’ve always been taught it’s a personal failure, you’re lazy or a horrible person it is very easy to put on weight. We are bombarded with food all the time and there are things like hormones, medications, biology, etc. Not everybody has time to go jogging for 45 minutes a day or do HITT. If you can do that, god bless you for it, that’s great! Some people have to get up early in the morning go to work and don’t come home until 9 PM or later and at that time they’re tired! So anybody who judges others for being overweight just think about that.

Unfortunately, the call to action you have requested are to the type of people who do not understand or can contribute “nuance” to this and accompanying conversations. To do so, you have to have a mindset that applies a greater thought process to most if not all topics. And majority of people do not want to look inward on their own issues.

You know I am 67 and about 40 lbs. over weight and that weight has been stable over the last 20 years. I have a fairly new doctor and on my last visit, he was looking at my numbers and he said "Oh, good. I see you lost some weight." I told him, "I'm not trying to lose any weight." He said, "You aren't?" I said "Nope." I feel good. I'm built like my grandmother at this age. Genetics does play a part, people! You can't fool Mother Nature. I would have to completely starve myself to lose 40 lbs. and be miserable every day, and I am sure all the weight would come back. I'm A-OK the way I am. Not everyone is meant to stay the same weight they were in high school. It's a myth. It's not realistic. Society would like all women to become Stepford Wives and I refuse to join society in that total BS. If you are happy in your own skin, you are way ahead of most people. Don't worry about what people say. Just don't listen. March to your own drummer and the heck with everyone else.

You failed to address the health effects of obesity. Obesity is primarily hormonal, it is thyroid related, autoimmune related, medication related, and lastly, it is due to over eating (due to anxiety, depression and dependence on easy access processed foods) and genetics -in that order! It’s not about looks. Excessive fat can quickly raise your blood pressure and cholesterol which can kill you. It is also associated with the development of cancer and other health conditions which lead to a cascade of other health conditions which can kill you. That is why these new drugs are important. It’s about life over death, not looking better. The real dilemma here is in finding a doctor who can treat the root cause of whatever health condition that is causing your obesity.
@Authorrlee7 ай бұрын
You make a great point in stating that finding the right doctor is incredibly important to this equation! As someone who has a PC + various speciality doctors it has taken me over 5 years to find a GOOD & truly carting team that can address the various roots. Do you have a recommendation to people on avenues to take on where to start? I ask this genuinely as the way I had to do it took 5 years which is far too long & a length of time that allows several sicknesses to develop that could take the rest of a lifetime to undo. I would hope others do not have to go my same route.

Everything I tried worked; like low calories diet and intermittent fasting etc.... but the minute I stopped I gained all the weight back on and more.
