Well Bjorn, I’ve said it before but I want to reiterate. Your conversational and humble presentations are very enjoyable and relaxing to an old mountain man. Even tho we’re some 5000 miles apart, I feel like we’re old friends sitting around the fire together enjoying the natural world. Many thanks my friend! PS: good job on the bread. I have the same little container so I’m going to bake some bread on my next outing. 😜

That is the truth, my friend. We have baked better bread than this in the living history group using a Dutch oven, but that one is too heavy to carry. I like the concept of being able to make a little bit of bread, maybe just for two people, without having to carry too much.

I used to make bread and hobo stew when camping. No stove necessary, just a couple of Dutch ovens...or at a pinch, one Dutch oven and some aluminum foil. Cooking over coals is awesome. I've also made pork, steak, and chicken directly over coals many times, and eaten fish my brother caught. Good times going camping 2x - 3x a year as a kid. I miss it more deeply than I can say.

When I was a teen, I would ride my horse out into the back woods and bake the native indian bread, Bannock. I would just drape the dough across a willow bough and let it bake hanging on the stick. My horse always got half, and he wouldn't eat it unless I had butter and blueberry preserves on it. Lol!

Before the "problem" I used to love going off on the train to the beaches or parks and having a picnic. The food always tastes better and I'm always more hungry. I bring my salads in one box and the bread in another and all my homemade spreads and a big flask of coffee. Years ago when I was young my family would go on wonderful picnics in the mountains around Dublin in Wicklow and my parents would bring a big stew that we made in the pressure cooker. Oh God it was to die for. Ah those happy days chasing around looking for rabbits and getting lost and climbing trees. I hope you enjoyed

My father's father came from Lysakker at age 19 as a master baker to USA. He answered a newspaper add from South Dakota in 1909. My father also became a master baker. He chose a different career before I was born, but we still hardly ever had store bought bread. I am one of the last in the family to make lefse. When I first was married, my wife was amazed with me making bread. I didn't know it was unusual.

In Australia, bread cooked on the fire is called damper. Its cooked in a cast iron pot and buried in the coals, or placed directly onto the coals or the dough is wrapped around sticks and held over the fire. Though you do have to eat around the "extra crispy" bits, its the best tasting bread in the world :)

Nice! Looks beautiful! Bread always impresses! I have practiced this method many times and have a few inputs. It seems to be easier if the container is bigger, idea is its a hot-air oven basically, wherever the bread touches outer container, it gets burned. If container is big, say over 5 centimeters from all sides to the bread, one can get away with open flames, but its definately more risky. :) Time varies very much as its really difficult to tell the heat, especially inside the oven. I get anything from 5-25 minutes on same setup! Often I make 3-4 small breads, and i have a handkerchief i cover them in, so they sort of "afterbakes" together. If one is not finished in the middle, one can continue baking it. I usually enjoy the bread with butter and jam, or sometimes just some mustard. Of course with soup, bacon or sausage it gets even better :)

Very nice video. It is exceptionally difficult to cook well in stainless steel, so it is no surprise that the bread made in this video is "over-toasted". There are a couple of things you can do to campfire "bake" bread. Of course, baking in a cast iron Dutch Oven is the easiest, but cast iron is heavy. A good lighter-weight substitute is a cast aluminum Dutch Oven which weighs just nearly half of cast iron. Of course, baking can be done effectively in a reflector oven or even cooked on a stick over the fire. However, if you are dead-set on baking in a thin metal can, put a can inside of a can ( two cans).

the trick i use when teaching my students this method is heat some stones to put around the can to avoid the flames the flames heat the rocks rocks heat tin , tin bakes bread , and i also break cream along and have the kids make fresh butter , they love it and the butter making lets the younger members feel like they are part of the team .....i teach 10 yrs and above in my classes

If you can make the heat source slightly cooler (maybe using embers instead of open flame or a smaller flame) and cook it for longer you might be able to still have it cook all the way through with less burning on the outside.

Not sure it'd work as the bread has so much flour! It'd probably need steam. This dough is for immediate consumption bread, will turn to Stone as it cools..
