I was going to say the exact same thing. I imagine my eyes were just that wide the first time I heard 'Deadhead'. He really shines in this EMG video. I don't have any hesitation in saying I personally think he has the best, most powerful voice in modern music, dating back to the 60's. At 19 years old Devin was scouted by legendary guitar shredder Steve Vai to front a band he was putting together. At some point Steve send Dev to a vocal doctor to check out his vocal chords; and the doctor told him that if he continued to sing the way he did he would permanently lose his voice within two years. That was nearly 30 years ago now, and Devin's voice has only gotten stronger.
@Paultimate72 ай бұрын
This implies that the doctor didnt help him understand that he needed to improve his technique, whereby he then did do that. I hate that implication and people that make them.
@hewiesАй бұрын
@@Paultimate7 I have seen an interview with Devin where he said he screamed until his throat bled and he was then able to sing like that going forward. He also said that he does NOT recommend that anyone follow in his footsteps, but it worked for him. It really didn't sound like he was taught the correct way to do it early on and he learned how to do it. Very much the opposite.

Not only is he a wonderful singer and composer, he is a wonderful human being. He's very versatile as well, one day he releases an ambient album, a country/Americana one the next, electronic, pop, progressive rock, extreme metal - he does it all. Since you're a vocal coach, Higher at Plovdiv might be nice, or Why the Quarantine Concert version, Bring him Home in Auckland, Death of Music at Royal Albert Hall. Beware for Deadhead at RAH - it has a tendency to get blocked, you might need to blur the video.

Hello Bethany, lovely to meet you! I too make reaction videos, but just about the emotional impact of the music rather than trying to be too academic about it. When I started about 4.5 years ago, I worked through a lot of Devin Townsend material, and I would most definitely call myself a fan, having acquired vinyl, CD, DVD and Blu-ray of everything he’s ever done. There are literally like 25 albums to explore, live records, concert DVDs and loads of KZbin stuff. I know comments below a video can be somewhat overwhelming (from experience) so there’s no need to respond or answer this. To continue your Devin journey, you’ll soon discover that he is one of the most authentic vulnerable artists out there, and everything he writes is as an emotional response to the world around him and how he makes sense of it. It often resonates with the listener who is looking for a barometer and explanation for their own reaction to the world. With this in mind, there is no Devin period that repeats, so from the early days of Strapping Young Lad and the angry extreme industrial metal that SYL made to Ghost, a stripped back chilled Enya-esque record, to the bonkers but brilliant chaos of Deconstruction, to the shiny effervescent poppiness of Epicloud, to a pre-pandemic Empath there is nothing that’s wrong to explore. However, for what it’s worth, here’s where I’d go next! (These are mostly live and easy to find on KZbin) Deep Peace - from Live at Plovdiv Deadhead - live at Royal Albert Hall The Death Of Music - Live at the Royal Albert Hall Coast- live from By A Thread concerts Grace - live from The Retinal Circus Detox - live at The Retinal Circus Why? - live from his studio quarantine online concert Genesis - live at Roundhouse 1. Numbered 2. Awake 3.Pixillated - all live at the By A Thread concerts Higher - live at Plovdiv Mountain Top - with Che Aimee Dorvil - live Dunlop sessions You know, there’s so much to unpack and to enjoy, take your time and enjoy the journey. Fun fact is Devin never really had proper training, he went to a vocal coach, and he was told his singing was gonna damage his vocals and he pretty much said "nah fuck that" and with as he put it "sheer will power" just forces his vocals. In his early years when he was fronting his band Strapping Young Lad, he was more death metal vocal strong with his solo stuff being more a mix but now he focuses so much more on his range and what he can do. I hope he doesn't ruin his voice though because he has a fantastic range and voice.

for a teacher who is really good at harsh vocals of all sorts, Kardavox Academy here on youtube is very much specialized in the heavily distorted sounds. And The Charismatic Voice has a video where we get a laryngoscopic view of Will Ramos' (Lorna Shore) instrument as he tries a couple of different harsh vocals, which is also used in currently ongoing scientific research of vocal production. Mary Zimmer of VoiceHacks, another youtube channel focused on harsh vocals with more of an educational bent than the aforementioned, has a similar and newer video of the laryngoscopy of Enrico Di Lorenzo (Hideous Divinity) which should also be insightful.

The 'metal Freddie Mercury' on fire! (I've seen Freddie in a Queen concert, 1987) Background voice is Dutch Anneke van Giersbergen who I've met once after an amazing show. You should review her also. Anneke was the example for Floor Jansen (from Nightwish). Song 'Grace' is beautiful: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2KqqKebpZeijtk

The Devi musical treasure trove has extra special gems with Anneke singing with him on some amazing numbers (pick any they're all winners).Which -jumping ahead to the masterclass... the postmod Beethoven Arjen's many musical journeys under Ayreon. These contain DOZENS of the best singers in the world (some which you have heard recently) and musicians.

Someone said that Dev is the male version of Floor Jansen. I think that's a pretty good comparison. Both can do pretty much anything with their voices. Looking foreward to more reactions of Dev (and Floor).

Oh, I have been saying that for years. Very similar qualities.

So wonderful to get to watch you discover Devin Townsend. Devin fits into the broader theme of great metal vocalists using wide varieties of clean and/or harsh vocal placements to great effect. You wanted a resource to learn more about harsh vocals, so I'd recommend this video by vocal coach Mary Z (who specializes in harsh vocals) explaining the fundamentals of the different types: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXPVeKmeabGdg9U . Her channel in general is a great resource. Also, Lolie from The Fairy Voice Mother KZbin channel knows a fair bit about the subject and I'm sure she'd be happy to point you towards some more resources. Also, a bunch of people are going to start begging you to react to Devin's performance of Deadhead at the Royal Albert Hall, and I just want to warn you in advance that he had a cold for that performance and that's why he sounds a touch worse for wear at the end of the song. If you want a version of Deadhead without Devin having a cold, I'd recommend reacting to the Plovdiv performance of it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIaQeINqZrGYibs I think it presents a better example of his voice on that song, since he didn't have a cold at that performance. Finally, I would add to the suggestions that you react to Devin's performance of Why? from his quarantine shows : kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqTHZY2he7uCfrs It's Devin leaning into the musical theatre aspects of his musical inclinations and it's GREAT.

To see Devon's vocal range, I recommend the live version of Bring Him Home from Les Mis. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3rbpXuIes50opY . It blew me away and his interaction with the audience was hilarious.

You should reach out to Devin for an interview to ask him questions. I'm sure he'd do it if he can find the time in his schedule. He's not only talented, but he's an awesome person

Loved that genuine shock. Devin's a bit of a unicorn vocally. On the other part, Mary Z at Voicehacks is a name I'd drop for you to contact about harsh vocals. www.youtube.com/@voicehacks
