She channeled Screaming Jay Hawkins, the original artist. Hence, the candle with his photo. If you don't know Hawkins, have a listen and then you'll understand that it's not so much about AJ's progression, but her vocal ability to serve the music, to feel and interpret it. Her range and musical intelligence are both beyond her years and outside most people's imagination, tricked by lineair thinking. 99,9999% of adult singers can't pull off what she did with this performance at 9.
@Cbcw76

I agree. I think of her as a SongRighter. "Channeling" Hawkins' original (not the KZbin videos where he's cartoon'd it to the max, trying to be as outrageous as TV limits allowed since this was always his only shot at fame) but she has vocal tools that Jay didn't have. But this is probably, in his mind, what his version would have sounded like.
@ericallen774
@ericallen774 2 жыл бұрын
exactly, it takes nothing away from Angelina, but people go on about the weird creativity in the performance, but it is direct from Jay Hawkins. Her vocals are beyond any compliment I can give her, but the real compliment for me is that this young girl (who even at this stage had been a dedicated Billie Holiday fan for years!) would have Screaming Jay in her itinerary. My mother knows who he was but I dont think I ever talked to anyone who know him. This tiny thing from Norway obviously digs him. This impresses me every bit as much as her vocals. - all should check out some of the classic performances he does of this song.
@Cbcw76
@Cbcw76 2 жыл бұрын
@@ericallen774 I can't find any 'classic' performances but - well, I haven't searched in the last two years. The only videos I see are of his cartoon-performances from the '80s and beyond, where he understood he had one and only one chance to become recognizable, and he had to go way over the top in both vocals and performance. I listen to his original recording - which includes those loose-throated drunken-why-not? moments. I think that's a pretty great version and this is the one that I HOPE AJ discovered and listened to, not those cartoon clip.

To me it is absolutely unheard of that a 9 yo even knows of screaming Jay Hawkins let alone admire him and then rearrange his best song and then bring it home with an otherworldly performance. A nine year old girl. I think I stumbled upon Screaming J at maybe 25 when Marilyn Manson covered this and I heard that in the movie Lost Highway (one of the greatest movies ever made btw) The song was so excellent, I directly knew it's not a MM original so I searched and found this great video kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZyqgZumq9anhcU of a man who was so much ahead of his time, all the glam and shock rockers can take a hike. I strongly believe there is art, all mankind can identify as some kind of divine intervention. That song by Screaming J qualifies, and Angelina experienced that and took it to another level. I still prefer the original bc of pure felt emotions instead of reenacted ones of a 9 yo, but I totally get it if you see it the other way around. This girl could be a divine Intervention all by herself.

very important observation. she does all this vocal "play" because it is needed to interpret this very unusual song. not because it is fun or for showing off. Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old. At this point in time, she was allready a superstar in Scandinavia and Asia. Also she was the national treasure of Norway, fact. Funfact is, so the musicians later told it. They didn´t know who she was, when entering the studio. We have to assume (yes, I know) that she introduced herself with her normal "every day" name. But as this guy told, the moment she began to sing, they had no doubt, who she was. You can see, how concentrated they were. They wanted to be the best for their national treasure. From about age 10 Angelina has sounded just like an adult, and her musical expression is mature. Listen to anything from 10 onwards and you wouldn't know it was a child singing. She's just not like other child singers. I guess that's because she's really an artist, like her grandmother, and creates performances rather than simply singing songs.

Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - Her nationality is Norwegian but is fluent in English even at this age - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the arrangement based after listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight on how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with the same band at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and gives them some instructions. There are English subtitles as the spoken language is Norwegian: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXLOi3d3ja90aqc

I'm not a music expert, but as an Angelina fan I understand that what she does here is not improvised, like a child's play, but is designed by her. She is the one who arranges the music of Jay Hawkins, which she shows at the beginning in the photo on the mug. Singer who gave birth to the screamed-theatrical genre. This performance is a tribute to him. Angelina here has created a work of art that will remain in the history books regardless of the age she made it. Angelina was not a normal child and she is not a normal artist: she IS A GENIUS! The best description of Angelina was given by an Italian reactor: "Angelina was already born a butterfly and over the years she has perfected and added colors to her wings".

You can see her at under 2 years old with a Mike. In the studio at 6 reading lyrics in a foreign language ( english) her first being Norwegian. Or she published a book at 9 about why she performs barefooted. In an interview she reads from her diary, she has written from a very young age encouraged by her grandma a famous artist and poet. I believe it is a combination of her intelligence, empathy and her musical precosity that allow her to sing songs such as Stay and carry all the longing and feeling that a preteen could not have possibly felt yet.

Angelina having fun. Once you watch a handful of her earlier performances, it is easy to tell Angelina doesn't force anything, her vocals just flow with no tension in her body. Bethany, I would recommend you react to a few of her early covers of jazz standards. I prefer her versions over those by the greats from decades past. "What a Difference a Day Makes" when she was 8 years old is a great example. Angelina Jordan is here to inspire us to be the best we can, to appreciate the beauty of life and music. It warms my heart to know Angelina's goal is to bring peace and love to the world through her music. I want to pay it forward, and support and promote her so that she will be able to use her platform to heal. Although you did a wonderful job highlighting Angelina, I suggest you educate your viewers since most don't know how to support you or the artists! Provide links to artists' original videos, official channels, and possibly social media. Encourage them to like and comment on the original video and subscribe to artists' and your channels, This should increase subscriptions for both. Bethany, another impressive analysis. You're right -- listening first to a more mature AJ ("Bohemian Rhapsody") gives such good perspective on her development. She still has the same instincts and native understanding of what she sings that she had as a child, but, almost uniquely, AJ has managed her voice through childhood and into (young) adulthood like no one else I can think of since Michael Jackson. MJ was a musical genius from the beginning; so is AJ. But the ability to refine that prodigy talent into mature talent is so, so rare. Her appearance on America's Got Talent was very well timed (I guarantee that Simon Cowell had been after AJ for years before her appearance, which her family agreed to on the condition that she would not be required to sign a contract with him regardless of the outcome), and signaled her transition from jazz into jazzy rock and pop. She gained an entirely new audience, who then when went to KZbin and were astounded by all her earlier performances, particularly this one, which meant immediate saturation and AJ bingeing because she had put up so much content. Her loyal fan base was ecstatic. "Bohemian Rhapsody" was so brilliantly arranged and performed that it seemed to justify everything that came before it. Reactors came from everywhere, and they had plenty to react to. Looking forward to more AJ reactions from you! Maybe transition back to something more recent, like her cover of Adele's "Easy on Me."

Unlike the later covers the original is sung just like this by Screamin' Jay Hawkins (hence his photo on the candle at the beginning, though most people don't even notice that) and she wanted to be respectful. I love this performance so much. As they say AJ don't play. Well perhaps here she was playing but the pro in her kept it on Track for the most stunning, amazing performance as a 9 yr old of this Jazz standard ever created. I believe it is going to go down in Jazz & Music history as the best ever for this age and in my opinion the best rendition of this song ever created Screamin Jay included. It will be revisited for Generations and will remain relevant for Generations to come. Any one discovers this performance for the first time today or a 100 years from today are going to be as amazed and astounded as everybody has been to this point. Think of the children who will be inspired by this one performance in the decades to come. This is an Iconic performance and will alway be Iconic. Angelina has on her own from early on at 6 or 7 yrs old reintroduced what I believe will be a whole new Jazz Era and redefined by this young phenom and prodigy. That is astounding! And she is just 16 years old... That is unfathomable!... Oh Lord... what is coming the world is not prepared for but we as fans have been on the edge of our seats and will remain there as we wait. No hurry. We want Angelina to do it her way when she is ready. She has already established her proficiency and incredible work ethic in this endeavor guided by an incredible family and professional support now surrounding her. We know Angelina will continue to amaze! We will be here to experience and cherish it for as long as we live.... and I am praying for many more years for myself to enjoy it till the end of my days... Not to be morbid but when I'm lying in my deathbed I hope to go out of this world listening to the most beautiful voice ever created for man just as Angelina came into it to fulfill her purpose, what she was put on earth to do, sing for the whole World... and Me! To me Angelina is always singing to me transporting me to that beautiful place she inhabits when she sings and to experience it with her. I think it makes it that much more impressive to hear how Angelina is reinterpreting the material, rather than childishly mimicking it. That actually seems to be her super power : her ability hear the stylistic core points of the performers she admires...internalizing the them and then giving them back using her personal color palette. Thank you so much for playing this. It is a masterpiece! Angelina, 9 yo, makes the impossible possible! I'm full of admiration that such a young little girl can sing like this, and yet makes it look so easy. My brain has a hard time coping with this. I had to close my eyes sometimes and just listen. Otherwise I would risk to have some kind of brain damage!

She was infused and definitely influenced by jazz from the age of one and half ! She is so sincere ,passionate and dedicated to her singing from a very young age ! Her early covers are mind blowing because she is able to manipulate her voice to mimic and cover these great artists ! She is truly an excellent student of music and is a great listener that makes her able to do what she does at this age ! She directed the band in this video and arranged the song the way she wanted it produced ! The band members referred to her as the boss ! The most astounding thing to witness is the visual vs this girl singing this style of music ! What 9 year old sings jazz like this ??? Her early rendition in her first studio recording of "I Who Have Nothing " is unbelievable at the age of six ! I suggest you listen to it because she is so competent ,fearless and delivers the song so well ! The video was shot by her grandmother and the comments at the end were so good ! Thank you so much for reacting to Angelina and your expert analysis was spot on ! Her rendition of " My Funny Valentine " now at sixteen will show you the full maturity that she has developed from that early age ! Keep posting and sending you much thanks and love from Canada ! 🤗👍🇨🇦🇨🇦❤️❤️❤️

Angelina is just a natural singer, she has the ability to give each song she tackles just what it needs to make it the best it could be. Over the time watching her you see she never does a song the same way twice, she is so spontaneously creative she performs each song in a different way each time. Sometimes for example she will do a different ending as she did in her two versions James Brown song "It's A mans World" first one with Norway's Royal Military band ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnbQaKd9p898gc0 ) and then Kongsberg Jazz Festival 2018 version ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5a4f5KjidWfZ6s ) both are amazing but a bit different in the ending phrase.

T Adams If you want to hear something special, ten (10) year old Angelina Jordan sings "I'm Still Holding Out For You". This song will move you and you will like it. You are welcome in advance. The link is: Angelina Jordan - I'm Still Holding Out For You kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqebnp15nZqcn6c This song will blow your mind. It was a demo she recorded at 10 years old about a week before her 11th birthday. I promise you will want to hear it sooner rather than later, you will thank me for it. Even if you do not end up doing a reaction please listen to it. But I think you will want to do a reaction after hearing the first line, and the last minute of the song you will find it hard not to replay right after you hear it the first time. Even if you do not react let me know what you think. ANGELINA JORDAN - I'm Still Holding out for You kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqebnp15nZqcn6c

Exactly right! She has explored various techniques, methods, styles, and genres to discover and develop her array of vocal tools. She's so technical, She has grown each year by magnitudes. Astonishing. Check her out the next year at 10 years old in her rendition of the demo cover of Baby Fuzz's I'm Still Holding Out For You. Unforgettable.

This is an amazing performance with all the pieces fitting together just right: the visuals, the band, the (her) arrangement and her singing. Just great and amazing. I think if you let people just listen to this performance and ask what they imagine about the era it was recorded, the person singing etc. I don't think many people would guess this was recorded this decade by a girl of just 9. And yes, she is growing at an spectacular rate: she must be working very hard to make that happen. She is 16 now and has about a decade before her voice fully matures. I can't imagine what that will mean seeing how brilliant an artist and performer she already is. Thanks!

AJ is the girl of a thousand voices and selects a voice for each song. This voice has not been repeated even when for the same song, it was sung by a more mature voice and without the grit in the growls. She has always sounded more mature but without the intensity heard here. Thanks for sharing

Great reaction, Angelina has been arranging her songs since she was 8 , in Bohemian rhapsody many people forget that even in that she’s only 13 , her octave range is A solid 2, but in some instances make people think she has a 4 ( I have nothing ) Whitney Houston’s octave range was 5 however she was 27 years old, Angelina’s range is still growing, she’s now only 16, and if you heard her latest My Funny Valentine you would think she peaked, she still has another 10 years before her voice is fully developed. At sixteen she can do things with her voice most seasoned singers aren’t able to do.

Angie was definitely channeling the original artist on this performance. Never has done it this way again to my knowledge. She was such a sponge when she was young. She just absorbed all the wonderful sounds she heard classic artists create and added them to her own toolbox of skills and sounds. And we have what we have today. And no telling what the next ten years bring. Check out the performance from the original artist. There is no question it was her inspiration for her own. She took his wild theatrical performance and made it into her own Jazz/blues masterpiece. All while honoring him. The candle at the beginning and her look to the heavens before singing. Such class. kzbin.info/www/bejne/paOxoXtsnt6ioas

A lot of what you said here is understandably based on a desire to "interpolate" between the two data points you have observed so far. You've seen two very different styles at two very different ages, and naturally you want to see a trend between the two. As you hear more of her stuff from various ages, you'll see how much variety she has shown in her singing at _every_ age, and begin to understand that relatively few performances of hers can be relied on to be "representative" of what she was doing at any particular age. (Certainly not this one, which is unlike anything she ever did before or since.) There are indeed trends to be found in the vast sweep of her career, but they are perhaps not as obvious as you might think. I think the best thing for you to hear at this point is her entire run on _Norway's Got Talent_ from approximately (very approximately) a year before this performance you just witnessed. I'm pretty sure you will find those 4 performances every bit as surprising as this one, in terms of, let's say, "subverting expectations" (each in its own unique way). Now, recommending exact videos to use for her NGT stuff is tricky, because there are two very different experiences you could have: (1) watch "everything", including the various pre-song profiles / mini-interviews with her and post-song judges' comments (/mini-interviews with her), or (2) just watch her singing the songs, and that's it. Not surprisingly, I want people to take the first approach (even if they, as reacters, have to excise some of it from their reactions), but relatively few of them actually do (especially vocal coaches and voice teachers). So I have put together a playlist on my channel that you can use to decide for yourself which videos you want to react to (including options to watch a single compilation video). It should be easy enough to find - the title is "Angelina Jordan on Norske Talenter (Norway's Got Talent)". Be sure to read the full playlist description, or else it will be very confusing (13 videos for 4 performances??).

She basically transformed herself in the 5 years following her win on NGT, and a lot of the things she needed to do to make the sounds she wanted are very natural today because of her voice maturing and her ability to control every aspect of her artistry.

When watching the last episode, the closing scene of the series, Lilihammer, that little Angelina was performing "I'm A Fool To Want You" in a bar. Her voice was so striking, I watched the credits to find her name. The first youtube I found was her performing "Gloomy Sunday" by Billie Holiday. Since you're going backwards chronologically, look that one up. She's only 7.

When I first heard this, what blew me away most was how she could come up with this interpretation at that young age. But if you listen to the original Screaming Jay Hawkins recording of this song, you can clearly see how strongly that influenced her interpretation. That she could produce what she did is a testament to her gift and her growing skill.

Hands down my favorite vid to watch reactions of! Nice analysis of her technique, she has never sung this song in this intense style since this recording. Most likely to protect her young vocal chords. If you get the chance, you should listen to the original of Screamin Jay Hawkins, then you can see how masterfully Angelina re-arranged this song while still respecting the original artist (as she always does). In my humble opinion, this is how the song was meant to be sung. Most people cover the Nina Simone version, But Angelina is faithful to the original. A little back story, the song was originally intended to be sung as a ballad/love song. However, the night of the recording Screamin Jay and the band got pretty drunk and his wild, "shock rock" style is what came out. I believe Angelina knew the history of the song and that is why she arranged it the way she did. (at 8/9 years old no less!) Looking forward to much more Angelina!

Really appreciated Bethany's appreciation of how AJ has allowed her style to develop in accord with the maturing of her voice ... rather than being trapped by the techniques required by a child. Bethany opened my eyes to the challenges that many child singers face as they grow into adolescence and adulthood. And how AJ is successfully navigating those challenges in a way that clears the way for her evolution into what will surely be an extraordinary level of artistry. One minor exception I do have to Bethany's reaction ... she often refers to how AJ sang when she was 10 as opposed to how she sings "now" , i.e. how she sang on AGT. Note that the AGT performance (Bohemian Rhapsody) happened 3 years ago when AJ was 13. She is now 16. If one wishes to compare the 10-year-old Angelina Jordan with the current AJ, it would be much better to use her recent performance of "My Funny Valentine" or her cover of Adele's "Easy on Me" as examples of AJ's current development as a singer.
