Tuomas said in an interview that this was him writing his own eulogy. How he wants to be remembered. And now in 2023 we know his wish for his music to outshine himself and leave a permanent mark has come true. Back when this song was written it was still uncertain. I read "chance for immortality" to mean he hopes his art will long outlive himself. And I am quite sure it will. And even if it doesn't, he's certainly touched many people deeply.

"This is the most personal song I’ve ever written. My testimony for the whole world. With this song I want to apologise everyone who deserves my apology. It also makes an “I don’t care” -statement to them who deserve it. The song is also about what Nightwish means and has meant to me. It’s all, without it I’m dead. I have created it and it has created me. When I pass away, this song’s lyrics are of what I wish to be remembered. An Ocean Soul." Tuomas Holopainen

Okay so first off, this instrument that Marco is using is an electric guitar/bass guitar combo. He's well known as The bassist of Nightwish but also an very accomplished guitarist in his own right as he has a brother who also plays guitar (Zachary Hietala) and together they have had their own band (Tarot) long before he joined Nightwish. So he plays both guitar and bass, he uses this same guitar in the live version of "The Islander" Live in Tampere. As for the song, I won't go into the deepest meanings of all the lyrics, but overall the "Dead Boy" is referring to the lost innocence of childhood that we all must make the choice to kill at some point in our lives in order to become adults and "mature". This song is a love letter to all who know him as the innocent and loving soul that he would like to be known as and a simple "up yours" to all who didn't see him for his true worth. So he kills the child, the dead boy, and becomes the Ocean Soul, a Lonely Soul. He wishes he didn't care for the Child, but he can't help but wish for those days again. The ocean soul is a whole different thing with which he has alluded to for years. Deep, Silent, Constant, But always changing. Personally i see it as the ocean, no matter how it appears on the surface, calm or tumultuous, there's always deep, dark turmoil going on underneath that no one can see.

There is an interesting story regarding Marko's double neck guitar, The German guitar company 'Warwick' famous for their incredible bass guitars also now owns the much older guitar brand 'Framus', so this particular instrument has a Warwick bass at the top and a Framus guitar underneath, they have different brand emblems on each headstock

Yeah, but it's also understandable. He's 55 years old now, and been struggling with depression all his adult life. Touring probably only worsens that, as well as the fact that the drummer from his band Tarot died a few years ago, and now sometime after Christmas, his Sinergy bandmate and Finnish metal legend, Alexi Laiho, also died from long time health problems that were likely a result of the hard rocker life.

I have 3 favorite Nightwish songs. Ghost Love Score (Floor’s version), Dead Boys Poem, and Poet and the Pendulum. As someone who has had a lifelong battle with depression Poet and the Pendulum really speaks to me. It resonates deeply with me. I was bullied as a child and had no friends for most of my life, so Dead Boys Poem also really speaks to me. I completely understand how music can be all you have sometimes. "so much to live for, so much to die for... if only my heart had a home..." "walk within my poetry, this dying music... my love letter to nobody..." "every thought, the music I write, Everything... a wish for the night..." it's hard to pinpoint just one with so much wonderfulness in the Nightwish catalog, but I always come back to this as my favorite. It's so simple in its complexity, and as a musician myself, I just can't get enough of it when a song brings out emotion in the listener... but it's even more magical when the song draws out many emotions! The song is so soft, beautiful, and personal as it opens, you can just feel your heart cracking open, then it moves to a place where I want to dance, then at the end as Floor starts in the basement of her range and carries the lyric up into a full belt, it's right back to your broken heart but with power instead of fragility. I think that's the magic of Tuomas' writing and Floor's delivery. the song starts breaking your heart with this fragile sound and ends by breaking your heart with raw power. I could write a book about this composition and not have the words to cover it all.

There is so much genius in this work that it is difficult to know where to begin. Everything, from the stage set to the lyrics to the music itself has a purpose. Floor's heart-rendingly beautiful performance is beyond comparison - only she could deliver the emotional truth of this work. There is so much more here to understand. Note the swans in the background - these are the swans of Tuonela, said in Finnish mythology to be the conveyors of souls to the afterlife. Note how the boy has his arms raised in the hope and the longing of embracing that journey, yet - there he remains. It's worth a listen to Sibelius' The Swan of Tuonela to see where part of Tuomas ' inspiration came from. Here's Herbert von Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpvcfYqlf9ung6c. Exquisite. Emppu's ravishingly beautiful guitar solo is David Gilmour class in the way it conveys the sadness, the anguish of a soul who has been left behind in a lonely and forsaken world. It's a cry of anguish, reinforced by the funereal march of the music behind and complementing the solo. You'll hear that same sort of expression in David Gilmour's last solo of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb. I always felt that towards the end, it became the funeral march of a lost and tormented soul. All of the anguish and regret of something glimpsed and lost is distilled and channeled into one extended searing cry. So it is with Emppu's solo, yet it is so deftly and effortlessly woven into this masterpiece of Tuomas' that you don't quite realize what it's doing to you. Note that there is none of Emppu's usual smirking or goofing around in this one. He is dead serious (excuse the pun) and it shows in his expression. So much so that he has to turn away from the audience when he is done. And then there's Floor. This is the most emotional performance I have yet seen from her. She feels all of the passion, sorrow, despair, longing and even anger in every note of this epic masterpiece. She becomes the song and then she sings right into your soul and utterly wrecks it. It hits so hard. If this doesn't have tears streaming down your face, then you have no understanding and no soul.

For all Floor Jansen fans: Singer Floor Jansen confesses to Flair: 'I thought metal was terrible music' Floor Jansen (39) tours the world as lead singer of the metal band Nightwish and recharges in her house in the woods in Sweden. When she participated last year with 'Beste Zangers', the Netherlands finally got to know her. "Somehow I like that, stupid huh?" She initially did not know the program with which she broke through in the Netherlands, nor did the other artists who participated. She has been living with her Swedish husband Hannes - with whom she had daughter Freja in 2017 - in Sweden for five years and doesn't watch Dutch television. Why did she participate? She was impressed by the footage she saw. Besides, there was a good chance that through her this would make people curious about metal in general and Nightwish in particular. In the last episode she sang Phantom of the opera together with Henk Poort in an unparalleled way, the footage went all over the world. And now the whole of the Netherlands knows who Floor Jansen is. She is relaxed at one of the tables in the lounge. Denim jacket, jeans, long dark hair. Around her, people are busy making calls or working on their laptops. In between, Floor is in a calm state of being. She drinks tea, speaks softly, almost shyly. She talks about how nice Sweden is. About their remote home in the woods. It is a bit like Limburg where she spent part of her childhood. Had Limburg not been an option? “Hannes and I lived in Finland when we met. I had moved there because Nightwish is a Finnish band. Although I sing in English, I wanted to learn the language and it works best when you immerse yourself in it. Finnish is very difficult, I never learned to speak it well. Of course it doesn't help if you have a Swedish man. Hannes missed Sweden and because I was already used to the peace and space in Finland, we moved there. We now have a very nice house in the countryside. With a dog and cats, and my two horses. When we moved into this house, with a huge plot of land around it, I immediately said I wanted horses. That was my girlhood dream.” You were bullied as a child, you call that a dark period, was being with the horses a way to escape for a while? “Because we moved often, I was always an outsider. I spoke differently than the children in my class, looked different, was tall. That bullying lasted seven years. My parents often went to school, but there they calmly said that there was nothing they could do. I can still get angry about that, because you actually say: 'Bad luck for you, just figure it out'. I withdrew to my own world, to nature, to the horses. So yes, in a way that was a flight.” “So was music, by the way. At one point those were the two things I went for. My career choice test also showed equestrian sport and conservatory. I really wanted to go to the conservatory, until I understood that the vocal training was either very classical or jazz. I had nothing to do with either of them. That is why I went to the Equestrian Center Deurne, a horse training course. That was very hard. I ended up there from high school and had to work hard every day. Some muscles in my body had become so hard that the blood flow in my arms was no longer functioning properly. I had a failure in my hands, so bad that I could hardly drive because I let the reins slip out of my hands all the time. It just wasn't fun anymore. When I heard that there was going to be a rock academy, I immediately registered.” Were your parents surprised that you started doing this? "I don't think so. I was also involved in musicals at school, so it didn't come out of the blue. I think they have kept their heart, because of course it is very insecure. But they have always been behind me. They said: 'You have a talent, you have to do something with it.' My father plays the guitar and sings. He's more in the blues corner. My sister Irene also sang in a metal band for a while and we also performed together. But I'm the only one in our family who made it her job." Were you immediately into metal? “I didn't really like it at all. A friend of mine was listening to it and I thought, what kind of horrible music is that? I was a little late developing my own taste. In the first school band I sang in, we played pop and rock songs. I also really liked grunge, but more to listen to. It wasn't until I moved to Limburg and made friends who listened to different metal bands that I saw the beauty of it. It's not just loud screaming and screeching guitars. The music we make with Nightwish has so many nuances, it's pop, folk, rock, symphonic passages, it's very accessible and melodic. For me, this kind of metal music is the ultimate combination of heavy music, pure feelings and female vocals.” Metal music is a man's world, do you thrive on that? “I don't really know any better. I stepped into this life from school. I actually don't realize that I work almost exclusively with men. It works well for me, I like it too. Men are very direct, there is no hassle. I never think: what is your hidden agenda? I do notice, now that I'm getting older, that I miss female company. Just because women look at things differently and that's sometimes a relief when you're only surrounded by men. That's why it was nice that at the time my female friend went along on tour as a nanny. I had very different conversations with her. She also saw when I was not feeling well and immediately asked how I was doing. Men don't ask that quickly, or don't even notice." By joining 'Best Singers' you hoped that more people would listen to your music. Did that work? "Yes. Our concerts in the Netherlands were immediately sold out. The nice thing is that it went both ways. A lot of people who listen to my music have also embraced Henk Poort. What I'm especially happy about is that I was able to show that metal isn't just satanic music, sung by screaming angry men." Do you also think: finally known in the Netherlands? “Haha. Somehow I like that, stupid huh? It bothered me that we are known all over the world and barely got a foothold in the Netherlands.” Translated from an article in the Dutch magazine 'Flair' from May, 20, 2020 (Zangeres Floor Jansen biecht op aan Flair: ‘Ik vond metal vreselijke muziek’)

Here are the complete words to the song, including the young child's words...that are hard to hear. Born from silence, silence full of it A perfect concert my best friend So much to live for, so much to die for If only my heart had a home Sing what you can`t say Forget what you can`t play Hasten to drown into beautiful eyes Walk within my poetry, this dying music - My loveletter to nobody Never sigh for better world It`s already composed, played and told Every thought the music I write Everything a wish for the night Wrote for the eclipse, wrote for the virgin Died for the beauty the one in the garden Created a kingdom, reached for the wisdom Failed in becoming a god Never sigh... "If you read this line, remember not the hand that wrote it Remember only the verse, songmaker`s cry, the one without tears For I`ve given this its strength and it has become my only strength Comforting home, mother`s lap, chance for immortality Where being wanted became a thrill I never knew The sweet piano writing down my life" Teach me passion for I fear it`s gone Show me love, hold the lorn So much more I wanted to give to the ones who love me I`m sorry Time will tell (this bitter farewell) I live no more to shame nor me nor you And you... I wish I didn`t feel for you anymore..." A lonely soul... An ocean soul... Extremely powerful lyrics...and all I can say is I felt the word's as a boy quite often growing up! And I am 63 years old! Only I immersed myself in my artwork!

Hello Christy, how nice that you want to discuss this beautiful song by Nightwish. This song is now in a different light since Marko announced his departure from Nightwish a few days ago. This is a big loss for Nightwish. We will certainly miss Marko. Marko can no longer muster the motivation to act. I understand his motivation and I respect his decision. In his case the only right decision, also for Nightwish, no matter how difficult. Nightwish continues to look for a new bass player who will fit seamlessly into the band. I hope they will continue in the usual way. Greetz Henny

If you notice, Marco is playing a six-string guitar, which is on the bottom. On the top is a bass guitar, which typically are four string. This way, he can quickly switch from on to the other as he typically plays bass for the band.

Thanks for the reaction Christi! As you know the NW community has been shaked up this week by Marko's resignation announcement but videos like this help to brighten our days a little bit. Love how more people keep discovering the music that we love, it's really delightful, and your comments spot on as always :) I've learned a lot with your deconstructions. This performance with Floor is epic, but the song is actually an older song from the 3rd album, the original is with Tarja and her version is also amazing, in her own more operatic style.

A lot of Tuomas' songs mention Dead Boy (the child within) or the end of innocence in some way. He's also mentioned this in interviews. The loss of childlike naivety that Tuomas wishes he could still have. Great reaction once again Christi. I love how you GET Nightwish. This band has been my emotional safe space for a long time now. It's beautiful to see someone experiencing it for the first time, and explaining the technique at the same time. Love your videos.

There are really few songs that I like the way Floor sings because I started listening to NW many many years ago with Tarja. Obviously I prefer the original songs with Tarja but on this song Floor does a good job. It's not easy to please old fans because NW had a different style. but this is an acceptable cover for me. I'd like you to react to this song or to slaying the dreamer with Tarja. I liked your reaction!

Sorry, my dear, but that's not a cover. It's an official DVD show. A cover is considered when a singer is singing a song from another singer, but in this case Tarja was only an interpreter, when she was in Nightwish. She's not longer there, so the songs belongs to the band and now Floor is the interpreter, on the other hand Tarja is covering some nightwish songs in her solo career. There are plenty of different versions of Ave Maria, but non of them can be considered a cover, because there are thousands of different interpreter of the same song, same as the classical pieces that was written by Bach, Mozart and some other great classical composers.

I have received the impression that "Dead Boy" is a way Tuomas refers to himself in a former iteration ... younger, lonelier, more vulnerable. It is the Ghost of Tuomas Past. I think that impression comes from one or two fan comments, but also from a video interview of Tuomas, himself. When I listen to the lyrics of any of the songs referencing the Dead Boy and use that as an interpretive key, the song seems to make perfect sense, so I am comfortable that the Dead Boy is, in fact, the living man and legend. Tuomas.

This one was hard for me to listen to during that tour, Christi. I actually walked out of the concert hall to the bar furthest away in the venue to get a drink. Back in the day, when I was going through a difficult time, this song helped me cope with was going on and I emotionally bonded with Tarja's performance through heart and soul. To Anyone else here please don't get me wrong, I love Floor since After Forever, but for me this song will always be special with Tarja. @@TheVoiceLoveCo Ghost love Score and many other songs are original with Tarja, all the songs sung by Floor are covers or other versions. I love the way Tarja sings all the songs but I don't like all the songs Floor sings.
