Thanks for the tips and the opportunity to win this cool prize pack! Our must have survival gear starts first with a plan so people know where we are planning to go and for how long etc, but for something for our packs is our walking sticks. They can be used in many ways when you're in a pinch and I can not recommend them enough. Thanks again for the great video! Merry Christmas

love these ideas!! I want to get some of these items for my son who works in the woods. I am a hiker, skier and such and always wear a whistle and have a little emergency kit. I plan to make a pocket on inside of my jacket to place my phone in!! Thanks for all of the great ideas! Happy holidays to you !!
@TheWildYam4 күн бұрын
That's a great idea. The batteries freeze up so fast. A nice warm pocket or a battery pack plugged into the cell definitely helps to extend the battery life.

LOL, Jen - I'm starting to think of you as the Princess Auto Princess! Lots of great little emergency ideas you've put together. I don't do much hiking, but I do have an extensive emergency kit in the van. I could probably survive for *weeks* with what I've got in there! Merry Christmas to you and yours, Jen - and to everyone else here! ❤🎄

My favourite freebie is lint from the tumble dryer filter. Save it up; it's ideal for easily starting a fire.

I'm in. A compass and my dogs' blink light tags are my favorites in my survival kit. We actually had a little misfortune two years ago where we a bad turn on a trail and ended up following an old trail that had been redirected due to trail damage but wasn't well marked. It was one of my dog's blinking light that caught attention of another hiker in the distance. The sun was starting to set and they called out to my dog thinking he was stuck alone. From then on both my dogs wear blinking lights on their collars, and I have one on my sling bag that I use on hikes. The advantage of those blinking lights is they seem to go on forever without a charge. I wish I could tell the brand of the original one. It went strong for almost three years before it died.

That's an amazing story. I have one of those lights too! It is USB chargeable. I really should bring it on my hikes.

Not in because I have pretty much all those items in my hiking kit. My day pack always has a small 1st aid kit, 2 ways to start fire (usually a fire steel and a lighter), water purification tablets (for at least 10L), Mylar sheet, small compass, some cordage, and small pen light. I also carry a huntsman swiss army knife when camping/hiking.

I am in. All your safety tips are so important, not just today's but via many of your YT videos. Thank you for your interest in helping us enjoy the outdoors. Here in CT, we have a large population of bears. So, I nearly always have either a whistle, horn, or spray. Though I live in a residential area, on a street of only 6 homes, I have had 27, yes 27, bears on my street this year. 😮. So, walking the dog is an adventure!

A story someone once told me.. There were a group of men drinking in a bar on a cold winter night commenting on how cold it was and if you could survive overnight in the bush.. There was an older gentleman sitting not far away and he overheard the men and bet them $100 that he could with just an axe and matches..As it was around -40 or -50 the men didn't believe he could do it so they accepted the bet and drove the man out to the woods..The next morning they went back unsure of what they would find..Sure enough there he was sitting happily under a large Spruce tree between two massive roots of the tree..He had made a fire first between the roots to thaw the ground..Then he moved the fire and sat on the warm thawed ground close to the fire..The men were amazed at his ingenuity and paid the bet..A good thing to know if all you have is matches and an axe on a cold winter night..
