Changed how rock and roll was perceived and executed. Locust abortion technician is a masterpiece especially when put in the timeframe of the mid 80s when garage revival was at full throttle, they took a totally different approach and direction. Pussy galore as well.

I grew up in Maine. We had no alternative radio in the early 80's. We did have a campground near Acadia park, with a game room. We hung out there with the tourist kids. They turned me on to Butthole Surfers, B52's, Dead Kennedys, and Mojo Nixon. It was a glorious time.

BUTTHOLE SURFERS records that go from bland to indescribable. 1056am 25.9.23 wow... anyway............................peel show single sounds interesting. pioughd? distributed by chain with no name. when record shops allowed each other to exist. the dance mixes presaging jackofficers. all that effed up music relates to better times, weirdly enough... and that aint nostalgia talking... in my own personal opinion.

Hi there love this analysis and glad you put those early Records as your top 3...one thing though, they didn't record the album version of Johnny Smokes live on Hairway To Steven. The audience you hear was shockingly dubbed in on their studio recording. I forgot which concert it actually was taken from but it was some classic rock band like Foghat or someone that the studio had on hand! haha....Also im stoked to see some forgotten classics like "Boiled Dove" which I only had on a dub from my friend in Austin from back in the day, had no idea where it was from. Thank you so much and looking forward to more!

For me the BHS are almost two separate bands and I’ve always wondered why? Was it the major labels influence/demands? Their albums in the eighties were revolutionary and truly unbelievable. After Locust they changed. I remember being so disappointed with pioughd. They really never recovered for me

Yeah, post-LAT is a stark drop off for me as well. At the very least Hairway has Roky, which is good enough on the LP albeit a little deflated. But that track makes much more of a commotion during their late 80s live sets, which is how it *should* sound to my head. I don’t really care for what they did after that, though some live performances of their old stuff (such as the 1991 Lolla P footage of Graveyard) holds up from their 90s shows. I might be in the minority in thinking Locust is, overall, a step below the prior records too, however. Rembrandt P, their first alb/live pcppep and Psychic… all get more listens from me and always have. I’d have to say that Locust just has a few high points among the clutter that stack up next to their best material - esp. Graveyard, Human Cannonball, Sweat Loaf and 22go23. For my take, Rembrandt P has always seemed rather underrated and Creep in the Cellar along with (especially) Sea Ferring might make for my favorite pieces they ever recorded. Why the heck don’t people freak out over Sea Ferring more? Hm. I share similar sentiments regarding Hey and To Parter, fwiw - just not quite as mightily. Huh. What was I talking about? Ah yes, that’s right - The Hugh Beaumont Experience.

All the bootleg stuff was floating around on cassettes in Austin in '89. I had 3 90min cassettes that I was told were live board recordings. People collected them like Deadheads, 'cept we called ourselves Buttheads. I later heard Double Live was the band wanting better sounding live recordings circulating.

I'm surprised you didn't like Piouhgd a little more given your enthusiasm for the Hurdy Gurdy single! I love Piouhgd, though I understand why people don't think it's so great. Revolution Parts 1+2 are so good to me ... All the Lonesome Bulldog songs get a little tiresome (though I think that's the point), but it would have made a great album if you'd swapped them for the Widowermaker tracks. The CD version had Barking Dogs on it as well. Hairway's version of Johnny smoke isn't really recorded live. If you listen carefully you'll notice that the huge applause that keeps breaking out is a sample repeated over and over every time. That is one of my favorite things about that song. The applause is over-the-top ridiculous and it makes me laugh almost every time I spin it.

Bashing The weird Revolution is a little unreasonable, I think. You're right that "They Came In" is great, but the version of the song which appeared on the Mission Impossible 2 soundtrack is better. It was the version which didn't get the ProTools treatment. Moreover, there are a few other songs worth hearing -- "Shame Of Like" is basically a "Pepper" rewrite, but it's not bad and both "Intelligent Guy" and "Shit Like That" are worth hearing. I like Weird Revolution more than I like Piough'd. I love Electriclarryland, but calling it a double album is a reach -- having one side populated intirely by etchings does not a double album make. I don't mean to be a jerk, but the PCPP EP's title is supposed to be a mix of drug and bathroom humor -- "Pee See Pee Pee Eee Pee." ALSO, since you mentioned the Double Live album, you used to be able to get it for free as a download on the band's web site. You may still be able to -- I haven't looked recently.

I didn't listened to their first EP before...but it's still quite structured and believe it or not I can hear a bit of Residents and some No Wave (DNA and Mars in particular) probably still young and were listening and fascinated by those bands. I still think Locust Abortion is at the very top for the sheer variety of vibes and total freedom from musical structures - when it hit me...many years ago it didn't remind me of Residents nor other bands - it was just "Butthole Surfers" and nothing else - this is why most who knows consider this their pinnacle and no other works from this band stretched that far. I sense a bit of forced controversy from your part...but maybe not - anything goes and anyone has his/her opinion.

You *think* "Come Together" is a cover song? Ever heard of the Beatles? BTW, I could swear "Something" was on the other side of the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" 45, just like it was on the Beatles' "Come Together" single -- except in this case "Something" is not a Beatles cover. I know that it was a bootleg first and then the band "booted the boot" and reissued it themselves, so I guess there may also be versions of that record with different contents as well...

As a Buttholes fan for 35 years or so, they've never released an album I didn't like. Having said that, Weird Revolution is my least favorite. I do think there are many great things about it, and it was a weird evolution of the band, but somehow logical, considering how with each release, they created something entirely different from the previous release. Worm Saloon and Larryland are probably the two most similar albums they put out and considering that they were on major labels, it's not a surprise that those records had more traditional song structures. By the time Weird came out, they were on a really strange kick of dancey beats, and I missed the great warped soloing of Leary. Dracula From Houston is the worst song, which makes me wonder why they included it in their live sets. They should have played Yentl instead. At any rate, I really like Paul Leary's solo album. I think Gibby and His Problem band should've been better, so I don't even bother with it. The Jack Officers was an interesting side step, but kind of forgettable. The JD Pinkus stuff is alright, but I haven't really given it much of a chance. The bluegrass version of The Flaming Lips' Turn It On was a nice, long ditty. The Melvins' Hold It In I thought was also really good. Of course I'm disappointed that they never got around to finishing another record, but I hope at some point we get to hear what they did record. Have you read Let's Go To Hell? I missed out on getting that when it came out and the only way to get it is on ebay for $70 - $100.

I just finished recording all my LPs for BHS to high-end cassettes for future plays so I don't have to deal with the records anymore to preserve them for sale someday. I must say the way you handle your records is about as bad as it gets. You are turning Mint records into messed up ones with finger prints all over them, and the paper inner sleeves need to be torn off and trashed immediately and replaced with the anti-static/anti-scratch plastic inner sleeves. Every time you slide a record in and out of those stock paper sleeves it makes scratches all over the surface of the record which can be heard when you play it as constant noise. Oh and protective outer sleeves will prevent ring-wear which also makes records look bad and less valuable.

Records are for having a good time and dancing around to. After you are done with them give them to a cool poor person or. Give them away on your death bed. Never ask someone for $ for them . Records are just like old arcade games. It's better when they have cigarette burns on them. It shows someone had fun.

@@TheWinston7777 I sell them eventually so I can afford to pay upwards of $300-$500 for some other impossible to find records. If I kept all of them I would have no money to pay my mortgage and still buy 3 or 4 new LPs every week. Nobody is out there just giving away mint condition OG copies of Marilyn Manson Antichrist Superstar or Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales. You have to fork out big money for them and lots of others. If you like your stuff trashed looking that is all your preference. I just like when records sound great when I play them and I don't hear fingerprints and scratches all over them. A personal preference. I try not waste money on the cheaper re-presses because they sound like crap when compared to original pressings when the albums came out. Your copy of Independent Worm Salon for example is selling for $140 - $200 these days. Records that came out in the CD era are always expensive because so few were made then. Cheers.

@@AudioGuyBrian Move to 8 mile and Gratiot in Detroit. You won't believe how cheap house's are. These are house's will pass state inspection. The crime rate is very low. I should know because that's where I live. Don't believe what the internet says. Detroit Michigan is safe if you are smart and friendly. The winter's are the hard part. I just saw Doug Stanhope tonight. He was great and it was only a 20 minute drive.

Shame Martin missed the Jack Officers album which in my opinion is far better than the last BS albums. Neither of Paul Leary's albums are mentioned. One day I shall show my "autographed" BS albums (i.e. ruined by "artwork"). And there are still a few live recordings around ;).
