When I was on a budget attending college, I'd get two dinners out of one can of Chili with beans by adding a can of kidney or pinto beans to stretch it into two big bowls for two night's dinners. Add a couple slices of garlic bread and a salad and you're good to go. Too bad he didn't add Denison's Chili with beans to his list, because it's really good, IMO.

@Jim Burnett yeah you put a little bit and it reduces any bitterness or sour, but the big food companies put in 15 grams of the sh1t in a can of chili, that's because they know we the consumer is addicted to sugar, and since like 1930 they've been adding more and more sugar to more and more things, when they see one product selling more than another simply because it has more sugar included, you pretty much have your business model right there and look what has happened...imagine that, sugar is in EV E R Y T H I N G. I'm addicted to it, you are too though, we all are 98% of us. Wolf Brand Chili with beans is my go-to canned chili. Hormel is the country's "#1 Chili" primarily because of the LONG recognition of the Hormel name and a much more extensive production and distribution network over time. Fat=Flavor.

As a native Texan, I can tell you that Texas chili does not have any beans. And, if I eat canned chili it is only Wolf Brand, however, I would never buy chili with beans. They are smart to cover the "with-beans" folks as well, of course, but in my ever so humble opinion, those cans should not be called "Authentic Texas chili."

If meat has to have a filler, I would much rather have oatmeal than tvp. Mainly bc of the caramel color. I've actually used it in meatloaf 0 for years. One time I was curious and I tried adding some to my ground beef for tacos. No one noticed in my big family. Lol As a teenager I worked for a locally owned fast food Mexican rest. The food was actually great...except the taco meat. I wouldn't eat it after making it. The stuff was 50% cheap grnd beed and 50% what they called "protein". It came in large brown bags like horse feed. Inside were dry brown pellets like horse feed. We had to soak it overnight in 5 gal buckets in the cooler. Next day, it would have soaked up enough water to double in volume. Then it had to be run thru the meat grinder. Then it got browned with the ground beef. I do not know what tf that was nor would I eat it. Especially when they had fresh marinated (in real butter, onions and spices no less) and grilled chicken breast for the taking.
@keithsowder2756 жыл бұрын
I'll tell you something I decided to try and it worked. Typically when I make my slow cooker chili. I saute onions and Bell Peppers in Kerrys Irish Gold Butter, add my meat and when browned drain off the fat, then add it all to my crockpot with the seasoning packets, tomatoes etc. But i started thinking. Emeril and ALL Chefs say FAT IS FLAVOR! Right? So why lose that flavor? I also figured the longer the seasonings have to absorb into the meat as it cooks....the more flavor...right? So I typically add a bit of Brown Sugar and Maple Syrup to my chili, and I had used plain oats before in my Meatloaf as a binder. Why not just put the meat in the crock pot before browning and add the seasoning then? And since no one likes greasy Chili, and I was already gonna use a bit of Brown Sugar and Maple syrup....I added a packet of instant Maple flavored & a packet of Brown Sugar Cinnamon Oatmeal....it not only added a mild sweetness and great flavor, but also sopped up the grease and gave my Chili a great texture!

@geezermann78656 жыл бұрын
Keith Sowder - Wow, great idea! Besides, crockpot chili is easy to make, and yes, you can add the ground beef raw. But even if you browned the beef first in that great butter, don't drain it! That butter and beef fat is good for you, especially if one is on a keto diet. I like the idea of adding the instant oatmeal packets with the maple flavor.

@@geezermann7865 Try this recipe. 1 lb. 80 / 20 Ground Beef or Bison, 1 lb. of Webbers Hot Breakfast Sausage, 1 onion diced, 1 Green Pepper diced. 1, 14.5 once can of Fire Roasted Tomatoes with Celery, Onions and Green Peppers, 1, 14.5 once can of fire roasted ( nothing else added ) Tomatoes, 1 can of Light Red Kidney or Black Beans, 2 pkgs. of Buena Vida Chili Seasoning ( Now I do cook this one in the crock pot....but I don't use the oatmeal, I brown the sausage and ground beef / bison w/ the diced onion & green pepper with Kerry's Irish Gold Butter. Drain, add all ingredients to crock pot....then add the secret ingredient...believe it or not...half a single serving of IBC Cherry Cola Sugar Free Drink Mix ( you know the little tubes of mix that you put into a bottled water and shake up ) I also occasionally add some Cayenne Pepper to taste...depending on how hot you like your Chili. I let it cook on high for about 2 hours...and then low until ready to serve. I like to add cooked macaroni before serving and serve topped with a mound of grated Extra Sharp Wisconsin Cheddar.

First off, thank you for risking your life so we don't have too! 😂 Growing up in Texas as a kid the ONLY Chili we ate was Wolf Brand. Never really felt the need to try the others. I was curious though and now I don't have too. Later of course DIY Chili was the way to go. My ex-Father-in-Law made a kick ass Chili! I could never get him to tell me the secret and he is dead now. ☹ I think it was made with Morton's Chili mix but I am not sure. Now I am sure you know that according to Chili history Texas Cowboys got it from the Mexicans back in the day. In fact it's called "Chili Con Carne" Which means Chili with MEAT. REAL Chili never had Beans period. I understand that the Bean addition came much later and originated somewhere up North. Ya know Yankee land. 🤣🤣The Chili Appreciation Society does not recognize Chilis that have Beans in them. Anyway it remains a contentious topic, and to each their own. I think the Cowboys figured that farting around the Cattle could cause a stampede!🤣

Yeah, I've got a few relatives that do that with their burgers, just like you'd use a bread crumb mixture for meatballs. My mom occasionally put oatmeal in turkey meatloaf when I was younger, just so my dad could get off eating red meat, and he couldn't tell, ha; it didn't taste any different really, from what I recall. Oatmeal also makes a great addition to most cakes, as it really does give them a bit of added "oomph". :)
@patlowney28347 жыл бұрын
hilife 0.o I've heard of using rolled oats in the process of making meatloaf and chopped-up onions Everybody's got their own way of making meatloaf chopped up Garlic too. And another thing that my mom did with her meatloaf just put ketchup over the top of it before baking it. And go around the edges of the casserole dish that it's baked in and push the meat down on the edges. So the liquid part has somewhere to go. Because we do know that the fats going to come out of the ground beef as you bake it. Oh she also mixes ground turkey and ground beef as well 3 lb 2 lb of ground turkey 1 lb ground beef.
@MaxStax17 жыл бұрын
I never tried using rolled oats in my burgers or meatloaf but it sounds like it might be worth a try. I always add dried bread crumbs and chopped onions and green bell peppers, then I form it into an oiled-sprayed bread pan then over turn it into a bigger Pyrex baking dish. Like you mentioned you definitely need a place for those juices to go, the grease can over run and catch fire in the bottom of the oven. Then I also cover it in either tomato sauce or ketchup.

When I was little, my grandmother used to teach me how to, "doctor up," various canned or processed foods, in order to make them taste much more homemade and less processed. One of those doctoring methods included canned chili. Look for a brand with lower sodium (you can always add salt... it's much tougher to take it away) whose basic taste and texture you enjoy. What do do with that little bit of hamburger meat you may have extra when you made those hamburgers last night? I have your answer: 1) Brown about 1/4 - 1/3 lb of raw hamburger... add in 1 - 2 tsps Cumin and Chili Power ... more or less to taste ... if you want to add a bit more flavor to that canned chili. Stir in evenly and finish browning the meat. When it is done, drain out the fats & remove the meat from the pan, set aside for later. 2) If you prefer onions, peppers or any other items in your chili ... Add a couple tsps of olive oil to the pan. Add in some diced yellow or white onions, peppers, carrots or whatever else you may desire and saute until they become lightly golden and translucent. 3) ***Return the meat to the pan and add in your can of favorite canned chili ... or two cans, if your prefer ... Mix well and turn the heat to low and simmer for about 15 - 20 minutes, stirring every few minutes. *** If you like a little bit more kick to your chili, at the start of step 3, add in a bit of Cayenne Pepper to bring out a bit of that 2 - 3 alarm quality. However, if that just doesn't seem to have enough bite for your tastes, the secret to hotter/spicier Chili is not in adding more pepper - that just destroys the overall flavor - it's adding a hotter pepper that is in the same family. Replace the ground Cayenne with ground Habeñero, you will quickly bump it up to 5 alarm, real fast. Then again, if you have some twisted desire to shoot flames out of your backside for the next week or so, ghost peppers can bump it up to a 12! *** You may decide to add in some onion or garlic powder as well. You're call.. your choice .. your taste buds.

During my teen years in the mid-1970's frequently I would buy a can of Hormel Chili with Beans, dump it into a pot (microwaves didn't exist in my house then) add water to the can, swish it around to clean the can out, heat the chili up and eat it with about 4 - 5 slices of bread. I'm a bread guy so I loved dunking the bread into the soup of the chili. As a young adult in my 20's I would buy the Stagg brand chili. But I since haven't bought a can of chili in probably 30+ years; I enjoy making it for my family and co-workers.

Warbooze 1989 : I agree with you. Naturally, I think that my "made-from-scratch" chili is the best but, for a quick fix, the Campbell's Chunky (grilled steak version) with beans is my favorite canned chili. I like beans in my chili so, I heat up two cans of chili with a can of chili beans and tweak it with some extra chili powder, cumin, and cayenne powder. That gives me two hearty meals. I top off my bowl with shredded cheddar cheese, three or four dollops of sour cream, and two or three pickled jalapeno chiles. Some garlic bread is a good side.

Just re watched this episode and I have a recommendation for you to try. Wolf Brand Chili No Beans. It is the original recipe invented by Lyman T. Davis and sold since 1921 and is Texas based to this day (distributed by CONAGRA BRANDS out of Fort Worth TX.) I have been eating it since I was old enough to eat Chili. And the thing you will enjoy is NO TVP in the original recipe without beans. Great with Saltine crackers crumbled in it or with some Extra Sharp Cheddar cheese, diced red onions, jalapeno slices, and sour cream in it or even Fritos (another Texas invention) and some cheese and onions to make a good Frito Pie. And I warn you, you can not pour it out of the can, you have to spoon it into the bowl. Maybe do a no bean Chili throw down. I know you like beans in your chili but being from Texas, that is just wrong (it's a Texas thing, my home made chili doesn't have any beans either or tomatoes for that matter, just meat, spices, Chile peppers, onions, garlic, and some masa and ground up rolled oats to thicken it).

I'm a Dennison's man myself. Armour tastes fairly similar to Dennisons, but not quite as good.

I have tried various canned chili `s and my favorite is Walmart`s Great Value w/ beans. Only $1.24 and is everything I expect in a can of chili! I also make homemade chili, too.

My favorite canned chilli is, Chilli Man chilli. Your fingernails look awesome. Chilli needs beans!!!I'm freaking picky as hell when it comes to chilli. I would love to send you some chilli for a '' Part 2 '' to this series

Put chili on a open grill cheese, add hot sauce then more cheese on to broil till the cheese on top melts. When your hungry it tastes good.
