The video is heavy and shocking, but it demonstrates Germany's history, hence the lyrics "Will dich lieben und verdammen = I want to love you and damn you", "Deine Liebe ist Fluch und Segen = Your love is a curse and a blessing" etc. No one expected this video tbh and when it dropped there were mixed reactions, but if you follow Rammstein for long enough, nothing will shock you anymore. By the way, Germany in its current form was founded in 1949, so the BRD (Federal Republic of Germany) is 75 years old. 34 years ago, only the former Soviet Occupied Zone, also known as GDR, joined the BRD among the existing West-German Constitution. It therefore wasn't a new state or form, as the constitution of West Germany was retained, so basically just a simple expansion of the state territory.

The Holy Roman Empire is just the formal Roman Empire Title (or rather a new one that was kind of recreated) that was assumed by Charlemagne centuries after the western empire fell due to his ambitions and his alliance with the pope. Barbarossa was the one who declared the Empire to be holy. And the addition of german nation (not nations) was added way later. And the Holy Roman Empire of german nation was famously none of these things (neither holy, nor roman, nor german, nor an empire) seeing as it also included dutch, frisians, french, bohemians, sorbs, italians and many more. It was not a german nation state. Regional identities also were the defining identity until the rise of nationalism in the 18th and 19th century. The explanation about modern Germany is formally correct, however there is a distinct difference between the old "Bonner Republik" and the post-reunification "Berliner Republik", so it depends on your point of view of what you consider the start of the current Germany. Because technically, the modern Germany is the legal successor of the Third Reich, the Weimar Republic and the German Empire (and many of their laws are still in place), so denying the break at the reunification and accepting the break after the second world war can be considered arbitrary.

Hello. That was a great reaction. I'm from Germany allow me give you some thoughts from someone who's born here. First of all, first time I watched the video I was shocked and deeply moved. The song/ video takes a very deep look into our german souls and how a lot of us feel about our country. It's a love- hate- relationship. The video is loaded with tons of symbols, that as a German you catch onto. Let's start: in the intro you see Germania ( Personification of Germany) during roman/ germanian tribes time. The red Lazer represents the "red thread" of the story/ history. Astronauts from the future bringing Germania in a glass coffin (snow-white) so she can lead through the/her german history. You see a submarine on in the hangar. The Hindenburg disaster.( I'm sure you know about it, but some of my fellow Rammstein friends keep bugging me to add it to the essay.😉 Next you observe the twenties(Weimar Republic).The prison scene representing the rough, violent times especially for the majority of the population struggling to survive. Money raining down/ the great depression. And Germany's first try as a democratic state. In between Germania is dressed in knight's armor awaking her knights/band with the Lazarus spear. Next Germania is pushed in a wheelchair by the band through the Berlin Holocaust Memorial with burning bodies. (Imagine the statue of liberty being shown like that!) Next vignette the office scene showing east Germany and west Germany reunited (1990). Then you're being taken back to mideveal times, monks/ church are feasting off of Germania. In most scenes you'll see some church man involved. No coincidence. The concentration camp scene in the background you see V2 rockets ignition. The inmates are wearing different types of stars on their chests and a sign on the gallows reads: no photos. Germania wears an eye-patch first on her left, than on her right eye. Than a quick shot of Germania dressed modern with lots of gold leading german shepherds., representing Germany's wealth. The 70's scene shows the RAF- extremists holding Germania/ Germany hostage. On one of the pillars on the left side you can see the original wanted poster of the terrorists of that time. Next vignette is the witch burnings shifting to the book burning. If you have a close look, at minute 4:45 you see a church man holding up a cross hugging a Nazi, symbolising the churches over all position to the horrific events happening during 1933-1945. The birth scene. Taking place in Valhalla. Germania is giving birth to dogs respectively "Leonberger" a breed preferred by Kings and Queens. The Breed almost went extinct during WW1 and WW2. A cardinal/ Constitutional judge (dressed in red) helping a new Germany being born. The tank scene with the Karl Marks bust in the background is a reference to the uprising of June 17, 1953 in the GDR, which was brutally suppressed. At minute 5:50 you see the riots against refugees homes in the 90's in Hoyerswerda. Molotovs are being thrown and a car is being pushed over with the help of a man dressed in Nazi uniform. Than the scenes/ time vignettes start shifting faster and faster, showing how many times, when circumstances becoming too extreme everything is falling apart and Germania ( dressed in knight's) armor is crying. The outro is the piano version of the song "Sonne" which completes how we feel thinking of our past: a sense of sadness. To sum it up. Germany has a long, wild, violent, unique history, because we as a state of today exist only since 1990. Yet the roots go back a very long time. "Young and yet so old" I hope that helped a little to understand the video and with that us Germans. We don't have a strong feeling of patriotism, but a strong sense of unity. Our language, that we are very proud of, was always uniting us for example. With love from country of Poets and thinkers.❤

Rammstein is one of the most misunderstood bands in Germany. I have been following their carreer for ages and I have come to the conclusion that they advocate for standing up against authoritarianism. Deutschland is one of these songs, but the most poigniant is "Links" imo. There is a great video on yt of that song, and you should look up the lyrics. I am not an avid fan, but I love what they have been putting out as far as statements are concerned.

I got introduced to Rammsteins music back in 1997 and have been a fan ever since. And I think this song, going through the history of Germany, is arguably theri best song ever.. So many tiny references to history... 08:02 - Those puppies are "Leonbergers". A German breed that almost went extinct during the first AND second world war. And some more crazy little details from this video: Oliver Riedel has the inverted pink triangle (homosexual) Paul Landers has the yellow star of David (Jewish) Till Lindeman seems to have the "Political Jew" one (red inverted triangle over yellow triangle) Flake has inverted red triangle of "Political" prisoner (really hard to see, had to check the original and go frame-by-frame to see it).

Summary: There is quite literally NOTHING in this video that does not have a meaning. I'm still of the opinion this is the best music video ever produced. Because it is not only visually stunning, but it actually MEANS something. Not something...everything. As a German watching this is just chilling, because it's 100% damn accurate. And in case it has not been mentioned: The red lasers aren't there for cool looks - there is a saying in German that is called 'der rote Faden', which directly translates into 'the red thread' - and it refers to 'the main storyline/theme/meaning' in a book or other artistic piece, in this case, Germany's history. So the video is quite literally the red thread through German history. Nice little bit of semi-useful knowledge right there^^

Rammstein has some great videos, but their live performances are also spectacular. Even if you already know the song "Du Hast", you should watch it performed live in Paris. Unfortunately the translated subtitles will not help you to fully understand the lyrics. Rammstein always works with puns, strange metaphors or subtle changes that totally alter the meaning. This will be lost in translation. i.e. "Du hast mich gefragt" means "you have asked me". But they begin with only "Du hast"="You have", which sounds exactly like "Du hasst" = "you hate"). Next expansion is "Du hast mich" ("you have ... me"). Standing alone it would be translated as "you hate me".

I've heard that song so many times still can't really follow the piano version with the original one in my head for some reason, until the very moment you said "why does this sound familiar", which is when the female voice comes in in the original one. to the video “Deutschland”, The video was discussed very controversially here in Germany and should be banned. But the good thing is that "art" cannot be banned here according to our constitution. The video totally reflects the situation here in Germany right now. If we look around right now and see what is happening politically in our country, we can only be ashamed. It's no wonder that the whole world laughs at us. Ramstein is always very critical and the lyrics are always ambiguous. There is so much symbolism in this it's really worthy of a documentary of its own. Rammstein really went to the wall in this, praising Germany for its achievements as well as calling it out for its historic BS. (I daresay if anyone made a similar video about America they'd be getting death threats within the minutes of its release- we know we've got some great and ugly history and we don't talk about the second part.) I was happy to see East Germany represented- all the boys grew up in the Eastern part- as you don't see that part of Germany EVER brought out. My family left Germany in 1720 and though I am generations removed from the country, I can't help but feel a tug on the heart for even that thin connection- I can't imagine how it plays with Germans today.

This is probably their best song. With Rammstein it's always about the lyrics imho, however half of it is brilliant wordplay, sometimes full of references to Goethe or Brecht... The other half is just wtf. I was a huge fan at one point, especially when I was learning German, meanwhile I have had enough of the shock value. Plus the whole thing last year left me with a very very bad taste. This song remains brilliant, however, as a historian who got the degree in a German university I can appreciate the provocations in it because they are thought provoking and not just there to be there. "Im Geist getrennt, im Herz verein", boy if that isn't the best description of Germany I've ever seen.
