Saw them live many times in the 80s. Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow, 1986 was the best. One of the best bands live I've ever seen, and Street Fighting Years deserves to be in anyone's top 20 albums of all time.

For me (just turned 58), the Street Fighting Years-tour back in1989 was the best I've ever experienced. I had the chance to enjoy the concert at Frankfurt Festhalle, Germany , which made it to the anchor news on national television. They performed their interpretation of Peter Gabriel's "Biko" what ment to be their last song that evening with it's captivating chorus and the audience - including me - would continue singing those catching lines for, I guess, a quarter of an hour. So Simple Minds themselves stood there totally flabbergasted, applauding the crowd. That was an outstanding experience!

With the early stuff by Simple Minds it took me a few listens to beging to hear the lyrics, the vocals were so amazingly musical that I enjoyed it for that at first, then the lyrics took me to some amazing places. This band was leading the pack in creativity in sound.

Thank you for posting this great song. The intro is actually a different song called Soul Crying Out which is a great song in its own right and from the same album as Belfast Child (Street Fighting Years). It's only when you get into the actual live footage that Belfast Child begins. The entire album was brilliant (as with most of the albums they did in the 80s).

In the film footage shown during the performance you may have seen a sign saying 'HARLAND +'. The full sign would say 'HARLAND + WOLFF'. This was the company that built the Titanic. I'm sure that the original video for the song was filmed at ( or near ) the Harland & Wolff shipyard.

Another great reaction, started of with "Soul cry out" and then "Belfast Child". Great narrative Suzi, I have listen to this many times but have never really noticed as you describe it, how his voice brings the band in. With Biko and now Belfast Child good to see you are going through some of the Rock Social conscience masterpieces of the 80s. Bravo!!

Brilliant stuff, good to see you getting into this, you clearly like your music. Amazing to think it was released as a single - a 6-minute long folk-ballad-cum-rock-song, broken up into different sections a la 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and years later 'Paranoid Android' by Radiohead... and even more amazing that still to this day is Simple Minds only number 1 in the UK. They got a lot of stick for the song, some of it unfairly and maybe some not, but I know this much... their conviction and hearts were 110% in the right place with this song.

I've never seen this video before. What a masterpiece! A song written for eternity, and for all of those people who think and believe religion is everything. The history of Ulster shows us that religion is nothing but causing pain, violence, and death. For nothing. Was it worth it? NO! May the troubles never come back! Kind regards from Germany to Northern Ireland and to the whole world (and hell yeah, MY homeland was responsible for a LOT of pain and death)!
