Metal Band Reacts To Elvis - Hound Dog & Dialogue - Milton Berle Show - 5 June 1956
The quality varies because the video is made up of multiple clips. I have tried to edit in the best quality video where possible. I have synced in a new audio track, it is much better than whats on the original video. The hiss and crackle sound has been reduced quite significantly throughout the majority of the video except the end.
This performance has been included on many Elvis Dvds, However its presentation on a few is quite poor. The worst I have seen is from the film "This Is Elvis". The performance is cut short, truncated, interrupted by Johnny Harra [Elvis impersonator], extra "ows and ahs" from the audience are added. Also the bottom half of his legs are cut off, so we don't get to see properly his now famous leg shuffle [2:04m]. Whats the point of including footage in a documentary if it isn't presented in its true and raw form?.
Also sometimes like on the TV special "Elvis: Greatest Hits - Centre Stage" the first verse is edited out and begins at [0:39 m] and again the performance is interrupted this time by George Klein.
Some ask what was the controversy all about?
Well, this performance was pretty run of the mill until Elvis slows the song down [1:39m] and makes a suggestive motion with the microphone stand & then walks with a sort of drunken stance then turns towards the audience & thrusts his body to them. At the time this was deemed too sexually suggestive for a family show.

- Elvis' first television performance of Hound Dog which he was yet to record until July 2nd 1956 a day after his appearance on the Steve Allen show.
-In my opinion his performance here of Hound Dog was the most important milestone of his career, because it made him a star. The day after this show aired his name started to headline the front pages of newspapers across the nation and even though most of the publicity was negative, the offers kept coming in and he soon at only 21 years of age was a millionaire and the King of Rock n Roll.
Hey Suzie & Travis, well i know you know the song, but i don't think you know this performance. this ruptured america when it aired in 1956, resulting in 400,000 pan letters (hate) after it aired - from white middle class america. it might look tame by todays standards but i still look at this and get it - it was like moving from mozart to the sex pistols - overnight. he could dance as good as anyone - and i mean anyone. totally not coreographed, even the band didn't know he was going to do the last bit (just as well they were good at ad-libbing), cheers, matt

I had to wait a few years to see him ... but he only got better !! Milton Berle was one of the biggest showman. He was in show business for 80 years. He started on stage in Vaudeville, then silent films as a kid, did radio, TV and movies. Even in Australia we knew 'Uncle Milty'. Wow do I feel old when you kids on KZbin don't know these people. People in the 70's and 80's we all seem to know. The band wasn't expecting him to drop to the slow version but they just followed him when he called it on the fly. The drummer said he used to drum at strip clubs and would just pop each on each of Elvis's moves like he would do for the girl's moves.

And live too! Uncle Milty was the first TV show to book Elvis. In the 68 comeback special he was reunited with his band, except bass player Bill Black who had sadly passed away. But sadly that would be the last time they ever played together. They never saw him again. Paul McCartney now owns Bill's stand up bass.

Dude…Milton Berle was “Mister Television” in the 1950s!….and carried on into the’80s at some level. Interesting side note: Milton Berle, also called “Uncle Milty”, was the real life uncle of the manager of’80s “metal” band Ratt, and was in 1 or 2 of their early videos!

Milton Burle, or Uncle Miltie, was one of the first names to have a TV show. He'd been in vaudeville and even participated in an experimental TV broadcast in 1929 in Chicago. But he became a true TV legend when he began hosting the Texaco Stat Theater in 1948. That he was willing to show Elvis perform in all his glory is a huge thing. Back in the day, Elvis' lower extremity movements became so controversial that it was decided to film him from the hips up. How times have changed.

This is absolutely TV history. This was a big shocking bomb in USA. The tv-man is indeed Milton Berle, he was also called Uncle Miltie. After this tv-show Milton Berle got 500 000 pan letters, no not fan but pan letters, so angry letters of adults/parents who wrote to him 'Uncle Miltie we never see your show again. Are you not ashamed to show that young man swinging and jiving with his body, it was disgusting". Milton Berle called to the manager of Elvis, Colonel Parker, and explained that about the pan mail and said to the colonel "Colonel you have a star on your hand". This show was also the start that Elvis was not showed completely in the next shows like Ed Sullivan.

I found that America in this time was a very staid country, parents thought he was the Devil, the more he was demonised the more the teanagers loved him and the girls started screaming. Those were the days when the teanagers of America and even here in Australia and the rest of the world took charge of there lives, the parents were at a loss of what to do and had to learn that they could not control there childrens lives as they rebelled. That was like Xanax back in the day. *If you love this, you'll really love the episode with Elvis, Andy Griffith and Imogene Coca (she was one of the first great female condiennes and was in Natl Lampoon). One of the top comedians in History. Started in movies in the 40s, then whewn tv really took off in the 1950s, "Uncle Milty" as he was affectionately called, did shows with the likes of Bob Hope, Red Skelton, and all of the headliners in that era. If there were a comparison to greatness, Milton Berle, would be considered in comedic lore, as maybe Elton John is to the music world. So yeah, he is an icon of comedy. Robin Williams, and many others look at him as someone they aspired to be like. He was from the same era as George Burns who worked in Vuadville as a child.

If you remember, during the 68 Comeback Special, when Elvis and the guys were sitting onstage, doing the jam session segment of the show, and were cutting up with each other, you'll remember them saying several times, "My Boy, My Boy" and laughing about it. I truly believe they were doing that, as a little throwback of this very appearance on The Milton Berle Show. You hear Milton several times in this video, calling Elvis, "My Boy". Ive never heard this confirmed as fact by any of the guys, but it has to be where that came from.

Thus youth culture in America was born, fueled by the fact that parents hated it, and in a very short time as in later that year, when Elvis was on the Steve Allen Show (that he hated) the ratings for it beat the Ed Sullivan Show for the first time ever and forced Ed Sullivan to reverse his decision to have Elvis on the show which resulted in his infamous "from the waist up" performance of Elvis which still drove all of the fans wild.

Milton had a show like Ed Sullivan, however he did the USO tours, and was a comedian.. He was more open to change, as you can see, and able to ignore critics. He’s the one that asked Elvis what he used in his hair, “inadvertently giving the product a free plug”. Cause he was obviously taken with him and his hair, “like the rest of us”, )not only women were taken, many men embraced him and wanted to be like him, they also were not jealous of him with their women, they understood). Elvis answered Milton giving the product the Elvis plug for FREE... nothing more was every needed...no one could every compete again nor did Pom need to advertise, and why you never heard about the product he used nor any ads on it,,, (to answer an earlier react of yours)

Some people probably lost their jobs because of this performance. Elvis was almost banned from television and Milton Berle almost lost his program because of this. After this, people started calling him "Elvis The Pelvis".

While Elvis deserves the spotlight, I always make a point to give props to his band - That's Scotty Moore on guitar, DJ Fontanna on drums, and Billy Black on the upright bass. All three are in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame individually for their contributions to rock. Bill Black passed away very young, back around 1965, of brain cancer. He was only about 39 when he died I believe. But he was actually quite a fun guy - he was known to be almost as animated as Elvis on stage, and would hop around on the bass while playing it.

Milton Berle was a slapstick showman from the days of Vaudeville to his death in March of 2002 at the age of 93. Milton started in show business in 1913 at the age of 5. He stayed in the business until 2000. Some mentioned on his show that Milton dressing up "drag" during skits on his show sponsored by Texaco. Viewers nicknamed Milton as Uncle Milty. Interesting fact that I didn't know about Milton is that he was the uncle of Ratt's manager. Because Milton Berle was in Ratt's rock videos when Ratt were getting big in the business.

Milton Berle had a weekly show on Tuesday nights at 8pm, beginning in 1948, before most people owned a TV. He was a great comedian and host and was responsible for people flocking to buy TVs to see what everyone was talking about. Berle is known as Mr Television as was known by all of America. When this aired live in June, 1956 millions got to see Elvis for the 1st time. Beginning in late Jan, 56-late Mar., 56 Elvis had appeared 6 times on a much less popular TV show, the Dorsey Brothers. They were an old time band singers, who didn’t like Elvis, but Jackie Gleason who produced the show kept booking him, due to the increasing ratings. Unless you were alive then, you wouldn’t be able to grasp the rigid morals back then. Milton Berle would sometimes dress as women, because he was a comedian, but even doing that on TV was controversial back then. It was truly amazing, given Elvis poor background that he had so much talent, charisma and confidence at age 21. He changed music, morals, clothing styles, hair styles and culture. He was the highest paid movie star in the 50s and 60s. However, after 1964, his songs weren’t big hits, as The Beach Boys, The Beatles and other British groups were the hit makers. The 68 Comeback Special, had the critics back loving and praising Elvis. Thus began the sell out Vegas shows and tours, until his shocking death in 1977. More flowers were sold when Elvis died, than ever. People all over the world, mourned his death. I know all this, because I was 11 yrs old when I heard Elvis sing Heartbreak Hotel on the radio and the DJ kept replaying it due to so many request. And yes, like other kids and teens, I flocked to see his early movies.

You are referring to Dolores Hart not Debra Paget. Dolores appeared with Elvis in Loving You and King Creole. Many years later, after being in the monastery as Sister Dolores, she did a documentary on God and Elvis entitled GOD IS THE BIGGER ELVIS (it's on KZbin). Of the many movies she made Sister Dolores is best remembered with the 2 she made with Elvis. Fans continued to send her at the monastery some memorabilia of her and Elvis. She gave Elvis his first screen kiss in Loving You. On that she remarked, "..my 40-sec screen kiss with Elvis became a 40-year fascination with Elvis and his loyal fans..", or something to that effect. God bless sister Dolores and Elvis.
