I was lucky enough to be a high school senior at San Pedro High at the time and I was in that crowd of 350,000 people for the most amazing all-day concert I've ever been to in my life. Little did I know on that day that I would be inspired to have my own rock and roll magazine in Cleveland for six years and that I would interview Triumph multiple times, as well as most of the other artists performing that day -- Motley Crue, Judas Priest, Van Halen and Scorpions. Those were the good old days! So glad to have lived when I did. Long love Rock And Roll.

Rick Emmett's voice was amazing live. Like Rob Halford, Freddie Mercury, Devin Townsend and other legendary performers always have their hand picked live sound engineer, to make the most of their incredible voices. Days before backing tracks and 3 musicians filled stadiums with one opener for years. Thank God they came along before the death of the American DJ getting to play what they want - at least after midnight - before national algorythms and industry only playlists.

@@LegoGBlok Here in their Hometown area, Triumph were always RUSH's baby brothers. Now mostly they did not overlap fan bases. As a Generalization Triumph had the Teeny Boppers, the Cheerleaders, The Popular's, and the Jocks who wanted to bed the Teeny Boppers and Cheeleaders, while RUSH had the Misfits, the Goths, the Nerds , and their fan base, was a smaller group of the 13-25 but also the 25-50 intellect crowd. Triumph wrote mostly for their fan base less deep then RUSH, but every once in a while raised their game. RUSH just wrote deep thought provoking stuff most of the time, but did do some less depth tunes.
@toddstevens13
@toddstevens13 3 жыл бұрын
@@LegoGBlok Well RUSH did last 25+ years longer together, and most of Triumph's fan base was different from RUSH's. While RUSH went into depth, Triumph stayed on the Pop/Rock sound most of the time, so they co-existed in somewhat different realms, here in their back yards anyways. More teeny boppers went to Triumph then RUSH, and that was ok.

First of all, thank you so much for reacting to Triumph, as I feel they are one of the more underappreciated bands from the late 70s thru mid 80s. Rik Emmett was undoubtedly one of the best male rock vocalists of his era, and perhaps of all time. His skills on the guitar weren't too shabby either. The reason you probably didn't hear them is because they were overshadowed somewhat by Rush, the other, more famous Canadian power trio. Triumph has a lot of bangers though. Hold On, Magic Power, Fight the Good Fight, Blinding Light Show, et. al.

I was at this show for my 21st birthday. I love VAN HALEN, but folks they were not very good this night. Day 2 (Sunday, May 29th 1983) was dubbed “Heavy Metal Day,” with Quiet Riot; Mötley Crüe; Ozzy Osbourne; Judas Priest; Triumph, Scorpions; and Van Halen. I believe this was the exact order in which they played. Van Halen had already been three months into a massive tour when the 1983 US Festival came up, and weren’t in the best condition when their tour bus arrived at the concert site. David Lee Roth was so wasted he couldn’t remember the words to the band’s songs. According to Wozniak himself, in his memoir Woz: Computer Geek to Cult Icon, Roth was “practically falling down onstage. He was so drunk, slurring and forgetting lyrics and everything.”

About10-15 feet from the stage . Met him and shook his hand after the show . Rik is an amazing guitarist - actually he is a virtuoso . He is highly accomplished in rock of course , but uses blues , jazz , Latin , Celtic , bluegrass , classical and flamenco technique . That's right . He has won many awards and well deserved . Check out his website and see up close and personal some of his bluesy jazz songs and you will know what a great guitarist is . Over and Out ... Peace

They were the original 3-member band a year before Rush. Cruised a couple of their concerts in Canada, along with BTO,Foghat, Kansas, April Wine, Heart etc... exciting times one I will never trade. Didn't have his trademark double neck 6 and 12 string guitar in this video.

They were by far the best band of the US Festival

Gil Moore was my 2nd favorite drummer behind Neil Pert who I believe is the best drummer ever (at least when it comes to precision drumming). I think Gil was WAY underrated at his time and even today.

"I never thought that you could be so unkind". Once the honeymoon stage passes, time goes by, and reality sinks in that what you thought was an angel or the person that would follow you to the ends of the earth now wants to push you off of it. That one person you thought you could trust and had your back to help you fight through this world is now stabbing you in the back. 23 years of marriage and 2 kids down the drain. BTW this is another power trio from Toronto like Rush and as a matter of fact broke through the following year that Rush did and to this day thank Rush for opening the door for Canadian heavy rock bands such as themselves. Rik Emmet the vocalist/guitarist here has actually done his share of collaboration work with Alex Lifeson the guitarist for Rush.

Just so you know, Rik (The Rocket) Emmett was the lead singer and guitar player of one of the most underrated bands in North America, but also was a Canadian national sprint champion, called The Rocket!

If you guys liked this song, you should really check out "Fight the Good Fight" from this same performance (US Festival). Your minds will be blown. Incredible performance. You won't be disappointed.

The whole set was epic. "when the lights go down" to give Gil some love was great too. You didn't want to follow Triumph this day.

The drummer also sings lead on about 20-30% of their songs.

Yeah. Love Gil's stuff. "when the lights go down" from this same show was great too. Hell, the whole set is one of the great guest live set spots ever. Following Triumph this day was a fail.

Hope you revisit this epic set soon. Try "when the lights go down" since you dug the drummer. His vocals are terrific too. More of a blues style but Gil Moore wails on it.
