Two years ago for me, still wish there were things I would have been able to say, in some theoretical perfect way. I think, after much pondering, and a whole lot of anguish, that there is no perfect statement, or gesture, or anything. That we are who we are, and that our lives are the largest statements possible. That is all.

My Dad is 90 and in aged care in not good health. I told him I loved him for the first time only a few months ago. I tell him every time I see him now. Before that we would never say because we were too blokey. I'm lucky I get a chance to say it. I wish I told him earlier because he is a great person and Father.

My father passed away the week before xmas 24. This song came out when I was 19, I grew up when I heard it. Although we never agreed with everything each other said, we had discussions and not arguments. Discussions and disagreements were never taken personally. Part of being an adult is having different opinions, informed opinions, to other adults and being able to discuss those ideas and concepts. We also made sure nothing went unsaid. I beg others to do the same, it was much easier doing a Eulogy that said 'Thank you for being my Dad' than it would have been to say 'I wish I had told him....'

always loved this song, my mom died when i was 13, new years eve.1973/ 74,, i stayed over night at my sisters house to watch her kids. next morning, her husband woke me up at 6 am. and said my mom died of a heart attack making dad, his lunch for work. then 5 yrs. later, dad was going through a triple heart by pass, the day before his 63 rd. birthday he told my sister and i not to come to the hospital because he wouldnt know that we were there anyways, and that it would be boring for us. so that day, about 4 pm. the hospital called and , dads heart was not strong enough when they took him off the machine. my sister and i never got the chance to tell mom or dad how we LOVED them. song makes me cry every time i hear it.........thank you..........

I've watched this video of Mike and the Mechanics dozens of times over the years and it always takes me back to the sad event of my father's passing back in 1998. We took him to the hospital in an emergency situation and I had to leave for a job interview just before they induced a coma. I remember his last words to me was "I'll see you when you come back son." but he never did, he passed away the next day. Deeply regret the decision to go for the interview, but I must live with that decision now. But hopefully I will see him again one day in Heaven 🙏and say all the things to him there that I didn't get the chance to! RIP Dad!

This is powerful and emotional song that reminds us to value and strive for a loving and open relationship with our loved ones, especially our parents. As a nearly 63 year old man, this song always brings tears to the eyes ever since my father passed away in 2001. My relationship with him was generally always good, but we were never a family that openly showed or spoke of our emotions. Just like in the song, I never got to say to him all the things I needed to. He fought a very aggressive type of leukaemia for quite a while, and I had finally made up my mind to tell him what I needed to. My brother-in-law and I made a pact to take turns being with him all night in the hospital after he deteriorated significantly. I agreed to take over half way through the night and be with him till the morning. I was devastated to receive the call after lying in bed, unable to sleep, after a couple of hours that he had passed away. I have lived with regret and great sadness every single day since. I strongly urge everyone that still has their parents not to make the same mistake. There is nothing worse than living with regret.

One of my favourite songs of all time ❤ My birth father died a few years ago and I do miss him, despite our differences of opinion on many things, but when I lost my adoptive Dad on 12th May 2023 when I was 52 I was devastated. That man was so very special. Despite myself and my other adoptive brother not being his children by blood he never treated us any differently from his two biological children. Dad always had an issue with me caring for him full time for his last 9 months (so he didn’t have to go into care and he could stay in his own home) and was upset that I gave up my job of 16+ years to look after him, but my answer was always… “you took me in, cared for me, and loved me unconditionally, so it’s now my turn to care for you”. I still miss him every single day. He was my rock, my confidant and my hero and although I have my husband and kids, my Dad was the one I could always go to if I needed to talk. That’s gone now and even almost 2 years later I still feel a little lost. 😢 No matter how old you are, losing a parent you adore is heartbreaking 💔. The message of this song is to not let arguments or differences get in the way of relationships, to always let someone know you love them before it’s too late.

Most people don't notice that the first chorus is sung only by the kids, the second by only the adults, and the last is both together. Basically as if first the kid say "Hey, listen to us!" followed by the parents saying "you should be the ones listening." And ending with "Let's talk together instead of at each other." Great and subtle emphasis on the content of the song itself. 🥰

I wasn't there that morning When my Father passed away I didn't get to tell him All the things I had to say I think I caught his spirit Later that same year I'm sure I heard his echo In my baby's new born tears I just wish I could have told him in the living years

My only son and child Peter was born 23 years to the day after my dad died suddenly in 1990 when I was 20 as I knelt beside him in the garden. My dads name was Peter as well and it was always intended that my boy would carry his name. I try my best to impart the knowledge my dad gave to me, I often fail but I continue to try which is the only thing as parents we can do. I think the most important thing we can pass on to our children is that feeling of being loved and protected so that future generations also carry that forward. My boy is 11 now and I know there will be the tougher teenage years ahead as he forges his own path, but for as long as I am able I will be here for him and he knows that. Really enjoy your channel and thanks for the reaction. John Pouw NZ

The song addresses a son's regret over unresolved conflict with his now-deceased father. It won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically in 1989,[3] and was nominated for four Grammy awards in 1990, including Record and Song of the Year, as well as Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Best Video. In 1996, famed composer Burt Bacharach opined that the song was one of the finest lyrics of the last ten years.[4] In 2004, "The Living Years" was awarded a 4-Million-Air citation by BMI.[5]

I had a bit of a breakdown and tried to on unalive myself 20 years ago. How my mum found out is something I'll always regret. However afterwards we sat down air out stuff, we met back up a couple of weeks later and she apologised to me for allowing me to feel because I looked like my dad (her 1st husband) and she had a "the last piece of the puzzle fell into place" for why I acted/reacted made perfect sense. Just to have it acknowledged was a weight off my shoulders. When she was dying she stayed with me and I had the privilege of being with her to her last breath. Bittersweet. She used to say kids don't come with an instruction manual but as a parent you do your best but be prepared when they're grown to be answerable for your failings. I was extremely grateful of her philosophy ❤

Listened to this song many times and it still makes me weep. I think as a male, it resonates the most. Boys and their fathers, "don't always see eye to eye". The male ego gets in the way. As an eighty one year old, my three sons (the eldest will turn sixty this year 2025) and me, are like brothers. There's no ego to get in the way. We share a love that is very special. As a father and a grandfather, my advice to new dads, is to be patient, love your sons and guide them as best you can until they come to maturity and most important of all, don't be afraid to tell them you love them. Nice reaction to a great song.

Mike of course is a Prog Rock God, as the bass player and guitarist with Genesis in the 70s and 80s along with Peter Gabriel, PhIl Collins, Steve Hackett and Tony Banks, and he wrote or co-wrote many of Genesis's best songs. This is a really well crafted song with meaningful lyrics and beautiful melody and Paul Carrack is just off the charts in his vocal delivery.

I love all my children, but my youngest son and I have an incredible bond. I wanted him to listen to this with me because I never knew my father, he passed when I was a year and a half old. When Paul sings about not being there when his father passed away, my son told me flat out, “Dad, I can’t listen to this with you.” He made me turn it off, sad, but one sentence spoke volumes to me.

Mike is the guy with the child in the video. He is a founding member of the band Genesis and its guitarist. This band started as a side gig made up of other dudes doing a side gig. Paul Carrack, the singer, was in Squeeze, for example. So this is what Mike did when Genesis wasn't touring. This was his "solo" career. Between Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford, Steve Hackett and Phil Collins, Genesis is an extremely talented and many tentacled rabbit hole.

The song was written by Rutherford and BA Robertson after both of their fathers had recently died, but the lyrics were written by Robertson, and centered on the unresolved issues between him and his father. Rutherford later told The Sun: "The lyrics were written by BA and the song is about something he went through. It's about the lack of communication between him and his father before he died. There's also the irony of him having a baby just after losing his father”. Adding another layer to the moving song's lyrics, Carrack had lost his own father when he was only 11 years old. BA Robertson wrote the first verse before his father died in 1986, the same year Rutherford lost his dad. The pair composed the music based on the verse, and Robertson later came up with the second verse. The final verse didn't come to him until shortly before the song was recorded. Robertson was staying at a hotel in Los Angeles, he has recalled going outside to a garden when the verse came to him. The music video was filmed in October 1988 in West Somerset near Porlock Weir, and the hamlet of Culbone. It features Mike Rutherford with his then eight-year-old son, Tom. The song reached number one in America, and number two in the UK, where it was held off the top by Marc Almond and Gene Pitney's 'Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart' for three weeks. Rutherford later said: "People write to me to this day saying how they had lost touch with their fathers, and how they had written to them on the strength of that song. Most songs don't have that extra bit that changes your life."

This track came to affect me in 1993 when my Dad passed. I was the youngest of 5 siblings and from an early age they regarded me as the "Difficult Child" mostly because I questioned everything they told me and the older kids would berate me for not being the obedient one. I disagreed with their opinions, ideals and even their politics. I was sent to relatives homes to stay often to keep the peace at home but I refused to change my ways, this set me in good stead later in life because today I can see how wrong they were even though I miss them. My Father told me 3 months before he passed from cancer that I was the one that gave him the most pride because I trod the hard path and did well on my own in another land whilst the rest were just vulturing off him. Not seeing eye to eye is not necessarily a bad thing, if you gotta cut your own way in the world they will appreciate it eventually.

Parent here of two kids. I know we stuffed up at times but have spoken to my sons about our mistakes. We were both young and winging it. I think they forgive us our mistakes.. i missed my fathers passing and wish i told him how i felt as well. This song is so true

Our parents did the best they could with the tools they had, raising children doesn’t come with an instruction manual, but children also need to acknowledge the voice of wisdom in their parents who speak from experience, and experience is always the best teacher

The song, written by songwriter B. A. Robertson and Mike Rutherford, was inspired by Mike and B.A. realizing their fathers had died around the same time (Robertson's 11 days before his son was born), and they later learned singer Paul Carrack's father had died when he was young (11), as well. The naval officer in the photo near the beginning is Mike's father Bill Rutherford, who was Gunnery Officer of HMS Revenge in 1940, and was a staff gunnery specialist in King George V in the final Bismarck battle. The video was filmed in October 1988, in West Somerset, England, near Porlock Weir and the hamlet of Culbone, and features Mike Rutherford with his then-eight-year-old son, Tom.

This song is so real for many people & can be heartbreaking. It is just so sad to think of your parents (mine have passed away) in that position. My mother died of alzeimers disease & father stomach cancer. Rest in peace to them & to all the people who are going through this at moment in time. 💔💔💔
