I rarely comment on a video, but you guys are simply awesome. The wealth of reality-based information coming out of this experiment is so valuable to me and many others for sure. I really enjoyed watching every single episode. Thanks for filming it all despite being in great hunger. The calmness and the humility with which you approach nature and yourself is too rarely seen these days. I wish you two all the best, my sincere well-wishes and I am tremendously looking forward to watching more of your content.

When my wife and I were first married we went through a rough patch when I was unemployed. We lived on bullhead and pigeons for a summer. I (we) have caught and cleaned 1,000s of bullheads! A light makes a huge difference.They come to it. If you wish I can relay a easy skinning method. you were close to it there. Enjoying these! Oh, BTW bullhead have a lot more fat/oil than Pike. May have helped you feel better.

Yeah, for sure, I'll read it. Send it to me. Email address is here: kzbin.infoabout. Unfortunately, many lakes don't have a huge number of bullheads, but then again, I've never really tried all that hard. Good for you for going a full summer, that's impressive!!

No, you are obviously not fully hydrated. Due to all of your extra activity you are sweating more. Take lots of packages of oral rehydration salts camping with you. Mix the package exactly according to directions on the package ( check the package before you leave home and take a water container mentioned in the directions) and drink this liquid in place of your reg water. Try to increase the liquid you are drinking and the body will allow the unused water to enter the lower intestine lubricating the lower intestine and passing the stool. This works for any constipation problem; even those caused by medication. You can even start this regime before leaving home. Love watching your vids. Be good, be well, be happy. Live a thousand years.

If the mussles are chewy, then they are over cooked. Try putting them in a bowl and cover with boiling water, as soon as they begin to open, they are ready to eat. That's how I do it and I've eatin thousands......lol. Like Jeremy I too eat offal, not much goes to waste when I kill an animal. Fish head soup is about the fish head for us (Maori - Native New Zealander), not the broth, we eat the cheeks, suck the eyes out, spit the ball, suck the brain then throw away the broth. When it comes to our large mammals (domesticated or wild) e.g. Pig, Deer, Sheep e.t.c...We eat the Brain, Eyes, Tongue, Cheeks, Heart, Kidney, Liver, Upper Intestine, Thymus Gland (or Pancreas) and all the meat. Eating this way a Large boar has sustained myself, my brother and my two adult sons for 3weeks in the bush, along with wild edibles and we always take Flour, Pink Salt, Spice and copious amounts of Honey.......LOL

It's an interesting question. No spoilers, but I'm fairly low to begin with and I didn't see that in just 5 days. I don't know how long that would take, but I think time would have run out on me waiting for that to happen. We have a skype review show coming up where we talk about some of those things. Pencil-small jerky sticks make excellent lure bait. Easily kept in plastic wrap. Oily, tough meat stays together on hook. Long lasting lure smell in the water (oil, honey, BBQ smoke, tomato, pepper, salt, etc.). Can take multiple bites before being pulled off hook. Tiniest of pieces 1/8 x 1/8 inch - maximum lure smell. Can even razor cut into long and/or flat thin pieces (pin worm, fluke lure).
@TheWoodedBeardsman
@TheWoodedBeardsman 7 жыл бұрын
Nice, jerky from store bought or similar to that?
@johnlord8337
@johnlord8337 7 жыл бұрын
Just as long as they are oily, tiny grind meat, and compressed sticks with spices. Not regular flank steak jerky. www.jacklinks.com/snacks/meat-sticks#?offset=0&limit=100 Like the liquor store or gas station meat sticks. Best options for trot line, bait fishing, crayfish/fish/crab traps, ... and if made very tiny and put on the hook under a 28 or 32 dry fly for a floating lure, will get results.

Hello guys, in Portugal we grill the fish with skin and head, we just take the guts out. The skin protects the fish from the fire and when cooked the meat comes off the bone easily. I think this way you would get more meat. Have you tried it? Thanks for a great channel.

I always have much more success in crawfish traps with oily fish. I think your main problem on that front is either a)the lake simply doesn't have a lot of crawfish or b)its to hot out for them little mudbuggers. What seems to work the best is to toss them in in the afternoon and check them IMMEDIATELY the next morning even before the son rises. When it's cool they seem to be much more actively eating.
@TheWoodedBeardsman

More to do with abundance. As a kid, I never did trap all that many. Plus we used pike and pike is a predator. I always used bread. I once tossed in broccoli that i had too much of and man, they were all over it.

Did you look for the mouse under the tent for a side dish? Going to go low on the poundage this time for the wild card. Negative 2 pounds, that is averaged out to one pound each, didn't sound like you had a good poo this morning.... 17 pike stored up got to have some weight gain there. Our winter has been way mild. How is it looking out mid country?

in the mediterranean we have a kind of sea crayfish and by experience you can eat the legs too by just crunching them with your teeths and suck the juices , and you can use the head by sucking it from the cavity where the abdomen was , and a bonus tip it's easier to "skin" the body of the crayfish if you open it from the "belly" and all can be done with your fingers/ teeth no need of pliers

you know , we've had a good on-going conversation about survival and nutrition. It may well be that the tv show 'Alone' will be in the dustbin of tv history before the mystery is solved, but hopefully it will help the producers of the next show of it's ilk. There are 2 main foodstuffs that is missing from 'Alone' that is needed for long term survival. The 1st one is a coarsely ground wheat flour for making bread. The 2nd is a salted & cold smoked meat supply.
@TheWoodedBeardsman
@TheWoodedBeardsman 7 жыл бұрын
The show is missing more than a few things in my opinion. The fascination with watching failure is at the center of it. I tend to think that our series works either way, success or failure. Seeking mastery. But maybe we're missing mass appeal, I don't know. It's hard to say what large crowds want to see. I guess ALONE figures seeing people suffer is better than seeing them succeed. But if I'm making a show, I don't want to be f*&*ing up all the time for ratings! I want to go out and do well or at least work toward doing well. That's interesting to me.
@wnchillbilly1
@wnchillbilly1 7 жыл бұрын
I agree 100 %. I would rather be entertained by watching someone build a stone oven & make bread than see them slowly starving. At least it would give additional purpose to cutting all that firewood.

We're going to try and I would like to include as much variety and open seasons as possible, but lining everything up including the time to do it, is really challenging. I think we can do better though, and that will be the driving force. No sense repeating what we've already done without applying anything we've learned.
@WesS2016

I find it interesting that Jeremy dreamed of you eating a tree. Does he subconsciously find your plight of hunger amusing? And was his explanation of cleaning up the camp site to explain away the chewed up trees? I don't know if the lighter spirits that show in this video are the result of it being the last day or of the acclamation of your spirits and bodies to the task you have set yourself. It will be nice to see if the next series covers more time and if indeed you both are just getting used to being in the wild. I would also like to point out that you could see the fats cooking at the bones in the catfish. Bones in the only way to make the most. look at 15:30 ish
@TheWoodedBeardsman
@TheWoodedBeardsman 7 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, could be the fats in the actual meat? Someone said they were fattier thank pike, but could be fats coming out of the bones too like the marrow! I guess we need to try to make some fish soup, even though I'm still not sold it would be very good.

I've heard a lot of different stories from people on what preppers/survivalists should have for modern traps with numbers ranging from 2 to twenty and some claims that if you tried to live off connibears the animals become trap shy and you stop being able to catch animals in them over time. I've also heard you only needed 110's which seemed dubious. Dog proof traps are sometimes proposed as a great 'bulletproof' something you could use but could you really scrounge bait for them in the winter from what you find around you? Cocoa puffs don't grow on bushes around here in the winter. My working theory is you'd want at least 6 leg hold traps with double stakes, #2 or larger, with the trigger adjusted to be as sensitive as possible and to use them all on blind sets.

Most of the fat in fish is accumulated as a layer beneath the skin and on the belly, when you skin and fillet fish, you are kind of losing most of that. It may be something to consider in a survival situation.

how the HELL have you never had heart or liver? Every man in my family takes a bite out of the heart of their first deer.... while the deer is being gutted and field dressed by said young man (yes, commenters, raw). I've just never met a successful deer hunter that doesn't at least keep the heart for later. Liver is liver. Gross imo. Heart however, is delicious. Do yourself a favor , (and by now I bet you have) unless you already have, give it a try, you'll love it. Especially considering the fact that you like marrow already. Which btw brother, is itself an organ. 😃 excellent video

I don't get it, how did you guys feel so bad and weak after just 5 days of poor eating, not to be putting you down, its great watching. Have you looked into intermittent fasting/ketogenic diets? The human body is designed to perform and push past a lot more than just a week of less of food shortage.
@TheWoodedBeardsman
@TheWoodedBeardsman 7 жыл бұрын
I was coming off a fast already and ended up sub 10% body fat by the end of the week! The body goes into crisis at 5% and starts to shut down at 3% eating internal organs. While our fat society at 35-50% body fat can go weeks or even a full year, that's impossible when you start at 12% body fat.

OK, short and sweet. you drive a nail through a board and bend it into a hook. Alternatively you can use a pair of pliers to hold their jaw. their lips/jaws are tough! cut through the skin around the the head, make a slit down the spine. cut both sides of the dorsal fin. You can cut the tail off before (my preference) or after. using pliers, peel the skin back towards the tail from the head. Start along the spinal cut. I roll it up on the pliers (needle nose) quit often you can jerk it off in one go and the guts will come with it. We used to process 50-75 a night. Dipped in milk and egg, rolled in cornmeal and fried they are good! oh, you can pull/cut the dorsal fin out and cut off those nasty pectoral fins before you start!

The Wooded Beardsman glad to help! I was told another trick by an old timer, haven't tried it because it would be survival only. Take a big hook, thread as many worms that will fit leaving the tips to wiggle. hang a light over the water and drop the worm ball in. leave for a half-hour. when you pull it out a bullhead will be dangling from each tip. they won't let go once they bite. I believe it as I have reeled in tons of them unhooked but holding the worm. Good luck and thanks for the great videos!

You guys are just over run with pike is the problem most of the us and especially here in Alaska pike are an invasive species and will have bounties placed on them if the start to get out of control. Here in Alaska if they even catch you releasing a pike back into the water they will fine you big time As where Canada at least at one time considered them as a sport fish

Was there a reason why you didnt try with aditional fishing routes to catch non predatory fishes? They might have more fat to it.
@TheWoodedBeardsman
@TheWoodedBeardsman 7 жыл бұрын
Trout are not very reliable to catch, at least around here. I considered it, but usually when we try for them, they are small and also we may only catch a couple for a whole days work. Pike are just more reliable.
@redhaegar
@redhaegar 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! I saw the amount of pike you catched. That was just just unreal. I was thinking about a float and lots of earthworms at the hook and an additional fishing rod that you just leave alone while fishing for pike. You wouldnt eat worms right? So the additional investment would be almost nonexisting
@TheWoodedBeardsman
@TheWoodedBeardsman 7 жыл бұрын
We're only legally allowed one rod, otherwise I would totally do it! Set lines...you'd need minnows for pike, but you could do set lines for panfish...though they bite readily, so it would be nothing to catch them once you found them...but they are far smaller than panfish so maybe not worth it compared to what you get from a pike.

TMI for sure. Seems like a man/women may be better team or at least one women on team. I'm a women, not sexiest but division of labor, seem like to much time is spent doing different things when you could be specializing and improving in tasks. If you go onto the show, I would take two+ food items for the 10, one being the pound of sugar and the other a carb source. Seems like you know a lot, and I've enjoyed watching.
@TheWoodedBeardsman
@TheWoodedBeardsman 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Melissa! Yeah, we could divide up, but the big problem was finding food sources. I do think we could do better though. In a couple weeks we're going to be trying again with some fresh ideas. The cooking, etc. was a decent time to conserve some calories, but after a day's fishing, it would have been nice just to sit back and share in some berries collected by someone else while the fish was cooked. Paddling a canoe and wrestling fish all day is pretty hard work :) Thanks for watching through, and I hope we can put a good season together this year!
