Great Reaction Drew! Loved you're expressions as the song was progressing. I knew you'd love it Drew. Tool could take any song. And literally turn it around. FYI Maynard does a cover of Elton John's Rocket Man with his other band. Maynard and his bands really do great tribute covers. You should give it a listen. It's not No Quarter of course. But he does the song justice with his voice nonetheless.

I knew you were going to love it better Drew because your ears are now "tuned" for Tool. I'm not saying Led Zeppelin isn't good or their version isn't good but Tool just takes it to another level. Led Zeppelin is amazing for the time period they crushed. I see where Tool takes a lot of influence from them in their music but man Tool is just so much more clean and easy to listen to. Love other LZ songs like Stairway to Heaven but No Quarter belongs to Tool in my eyes...er...ears. Great review and long awaited!

Half the songs on AEnima were written with Paul, here with No Quarter bass lines as well, Tool started playing it during Undertow's tour in 94. So apparently it was a natural progression still when Paul was in the band.

I remember me friend burning this and the salival version of Pushit onto a CD for me in 2002. Id known the original Zeppelin version for about 4 years at that point. I love the original-it sounds like a soundtrack to a dark, cold snowy nite as somebody is wading through a wide open plain, trying to get home. It creates a scene to zone out and into when listening. The murky piano, woozy vocal and phased out cosmic riffs from Jimmy Page- I wondered how Tool would rework it. And while the keyboards and freaked out psychedelia has been replaced with Tools own soundscapes and trademarks, Jaysus, did they knock this one outta D'hurling pitch. I remember taking the CD home, listening to it in my room,curtains closed,mesmerized. After the first chorus, at the 7 minute mark in this vid- they totally take the track on a trip of their own, with a 5 minute visceral odyssey. Its not in the original song,lulling you into a beautiful, mournful passage of music, before chugging down the drama of riffs. Then, back into the main body of chorus it travels. Then, another new section- a big, kick ass rolling rock finale, similier to the main rif of 46&2 shuttles the song to its shattering finale. Awesome. This one has indeed been requested for ya o'er the weeks,and Im glad y'got to experience both versions and enjoy em. I do prefer Tools version meself aswell,but this amazing reworking exists because the original classic was carved out back in the day. Great reaction, lad.

You my friend have the perfect way of explaining the experience you take when you listen to both versions but especially this one. Both very special, unique and one of a kind bands that transcend their time and I wish the younger generation can appreciate what Tool does for music and how incredibly special they really are because we'll never see a band like this again especially with the crap on the radio nowadays.

@stefanconradsson5 жыл бұрын
My immediate reaction is that it is the best cover of the song that I have heard among many. It is eerily similar for long stretches and then breaks of on its own. The impetus in Zeppelins version is about endurance and endless journey .. the dread of slowly moving time. Hence the "melancholic" breaks with keyboard (especially in live concert). This version is much more brutal. Time is running out and we need to move. The riffing at the end was just fantastic and I love it. Live versions with Zeppelin all differ, some versions are more upbeat and "happy" while other versions are "melancholic" if that is even the appropriate word. Brooding and slow and just dark. It is futile. TOOL thinks there is victory, Zeppelin does not. 🍺
