So in the time that it took to argue with someone who she thought was lying, she could have accepted the help in finding the product, checked it out, gotten home, cooked dinner, did laundry, put the baby down, and watched two episodes of Law and Order.

Twenty-three is not that young, but yes, if she doesn't have a mortgage or children yet, I guess you're right. Corporate tries to get the best people for the least amount of money.

I'm an older white dude who works at a home improvement store. This is my second job, after about three decades in a different position, and I've been there for a few years now. However, from day one, I would watch people walk straight past department managers to come ask me a question, because old white dudes apparently know everything there is to know about hardware. Never mind that, as a cashier, I have less experience in any of the departments than most of the actual staff assigned there (and what I do know is haphazard at best, since it's mostly based on returns, or using the app to help customers with a specific question). They will just walk past the department staff (particularly if said staffer/DM is female, or a person of color).

I looked 16 at 24 and a 17 year old teen at the library I work at shouldered me hard while I was shelving books not knowing that I was an ADULT employee. BOY did he get horrified and his mind blown by security and the truth! LOL!!! I'm 37 now and people still think I'm around 25-28.

I told my daughter she’d be glad to look younger than her age when she got to 40. She had spoken to a woman about agisted t for a horse. The woman called back and I picked up the call, she said she had been speaking with my “little girl”. I laughed, and she figured girl wasn’t so little. No she was at uni studying science and was in the army reserve.

As I get older, the people working look younger. I used to hear that as a funny joke, but last week in the hospital, my oncology “specialist” walked in and he looked like Doogie Howzer in glasses. How cool is that? 😊

I’m an older white lady and I had an older white woman(I won’t call her a lady because of how rude she was and we are about the same age in the late sixties bracket) tell me how incompetent I was in my job because I didn’t know all the names in the drawer. I work at a car dealership and at the time I was a cashier and names changed in the drawer on an hourly basis. She is lucky I loved my job. Let’s just put it that way.

At 15 I was in modeling school, teacher gave me an age range of 12 to 27 with appropriate makeup; scared the 💩 out of me. That meant older men might think I'm their age, and that's dangerous for me. However I didn't get carded until I was 40; that was hilarious. I did get offered the senior discount at the right age though...

I had my 18th bday while in basic training. At my 1st duty station, one of the civilians kept asking if my dad knew where I was. He did. It's a blessing to look younger.

At thirty, I had a girlfriend who was 26 and looked 16. I looked old for my age. Waiters would often ask me what my daughter was having. It finally came to a head when a woman manager called the police at a Red Robin because my girlfriend ordered a drink. Police came, checked IDs, then CALLED HER PARENTS to verify her age. The cop then called me a pedo for going out with someone who looked so young. She had never been on a date before she met me. No one would even hang out with her because she looked too young. That was the last straw and we broke up the next day. I still wish she hadn’t decided to leave me. I really loved her.

Wtf they called her parents for. Either the document is valid or not. How is calling random people better? Why would someone do that? What could that possibly do that is more trustworthy than a federal document? That sounds insane.

@Scarlett.Granger yeah, if I was that woman, I would look the cops in the eye, and say, "As you can clearly see by my ID, I am of age, so no -I'm not going give you my parents' # to call. You're going to get out of my face, because I'm trying to enjoy my date...and you can tell that manager to stay the f&ck away from us also, or I'll file charges for harassment.

It's not the young people who are the problem. It's discriminatory people, who can't do something simple like get the items they need from the store, get on line, pay for them, and leave.

As a 24 year old assistant manager, yeah it sucks when older people think I’m just a dumb teenager who doesn’t understand my job. I just flat out ignore them and when they wanna complain to another manager who’s busy, they just redirect them to me. Then they get shocked when proven wrong and act all butt hurt when I continue to not speak to them and don’t wish them a good day.

Customers have ZERO rights, they are being ALLOWED to shop in a private establishment. This woman would never had made it past the first time she called me a liar....she would have been told she could walk out or go out face first onto the pavement.

The observation about the double standard is the crux of the problem here and in the larger society. The cognitive dissonance is fatal.
@Scarlett.Granger

Also clearly seeing the problem and immediately turning right around completely ignoring it. Like at the end, clearly seeing she was in the wrong, but still going "they need to stop putting young people in management positions" NAH DUDE. People cannot, for the life of them, change their views on something when they've proven themselves wrong.

When the USs civic classes fail . You don't have a Right to older help. You don't have a Right to always be right. You don't have a Right to not leave when a business tells you to leave. A cop doesn't have to read you your Rights before hand cuffing you or immediately after. For some reason every time handcuffs go on, people become instant Constitutional scholars. You alway have your Maranda Rights. A cop telling you them is to make sure you understand them. If you know your Rights so well, you should know the most inportant one. "You have the Right to remain silent" USE IT
