@@00Fiddlesticks00 Rollins, Jello Biafra, H.R, Ian MacKaye…I love them, but they’re all baby boomers. The oldest Gen X’ers were 13-14 when they hit the scene. I was born in 72, and have seen Black Flag, Minor Threat and Bad Brains numerous times in the mid-late 80s. I remember when Rollins went solo and tried spewing poetry for an entire show, or HR just wanted to be a reggae singer. But, still. They’re really from the late boomer hardcore scene of the late 1970s. Late boomers have hardcore, they have late 70s and 80s metal bands, punk. Gen X has late 80s and 90s hiphop and Grunge.

This song actually got to number one in the UK music charts in 2009, a whole 17 years after it was first released! It was part of a grassroots protest against The X Factor, to keep the X Factor song from getting the prized Christmas number one position. The next year, the band played a free concert in London as a thank you to their UK fans. I've loved Rage Against the Machine since I first heard them as a teenager, I hope you listen to more!

I love how this piece relies on the buildup and release of tension, and how repetition is VITAL for the message. "They" just keep doing the same things over and over again, and "we" keep allowing it and following instructions over and over again. But the tension is constantly building up in the background -- at what point does it become too much? At what point does it explode? And after it does, will we go back to what was and simply repeat the whole process over again? Or if we do, does it still escalate a little more each cycle? This music is a brilliant demonstration of the cause and effect of social unrest leading up to a riot. Absolute masterpiece.

I believe the concept behind the lyrics for this one is that he wanted them to be few, simple, powerful and memorable...It's like a protest chant: he wanted to drill this in people's heads. He wanted it to be so intelligible and obvious that even people who hated music like this, people who always said "I can't understand the lyrics because of the screaming" would understand them. He is actually one of rock's greatest lyricists, if not one of the great poets of all time, and other songs are more extensive and more complex...

KKK burning crosses at night and then going to work forces, such as police, in the daytime. A great line about this song is, "fuck you, I won't do what you tell me" is NOT about Mom telling you to clean your bedroom. It is about dismantling the systems of oppression that these musicians lived in. Both Tom Morello and Zack de la Rocha are mixed race with black and Latin blood. Tom is one of the greatest living guitarists but always gets overlooked because of what he stands for.

Rage has such incredible lyricism in their songs and I always thought it was interesting how simple this one was. For some more context for your daughter - I was in Torrance Calif. visiting my gf when Los Angeles exploded into violence - a curfew was imposed so we got a hotel room & watched LA burn both on TV and from the window - the next day I went to drive north & was forced over on the Fwy by a column of marines in full battle gear heading up to stop the violence. Even when the rioting ended, there was an intense distrust of the LA police department and all justice. Rage tapped into that anger. Zack is saying: "Some of those who work (police) forces, are the same that burn crosses (are Ku Klux Klan)." The repetitive nature of the lyrics just pounded the message home and the shows were a catharsis of anger. I've met Tom a number of times and he's incredibly bright & knowledgeable - along with his completely novel approach to the guitar that mimics scratching records and other innovative sounds.

I’m surprised you have not done a reaction to Primus. “Jerry was a Racecar Driver.” always got the crowd whipped into a frenzy. Saw RATM and Primus at the same Lollapalooza (92?) and the pits for Primus were way more active than with Rage. In fairness, Rage was second stage and Primus was on the main stage.

Hahaha Hearing and feeling it all in person is epic. When it explodes, the pit busts open and the feel is insanely good. I remember people throwing off their shirts, using water bottles to light the clothes and trash on fire to create bond fires, while people begin jumping through the flames. The pits are freakin awesome. You leave soooooooooooooooooooo sleepy!!!

They truly did spark this blend of Genres. Which was not popular at that time. Not going to run down the list... Im sure there's a Rolling Stones article out there.

So true. I grew up with “fuck you I won’t do what you tell me”. Now kids are crying for everyone to do and say what they tell them. I miss that rebellious spirit of the youth… I hope it comes back… or is lying in wait.

One of my favorite quotes from that era... "The 90's made the 60's sound like the 50's." I reaaaaallly miss the 90's!!!!

Yeah I remember exactly where and when I was where I first heard rage against the machine, I was just about to become a teenager. Totally made me feel like rebelling against everything. Now I'm 38 and want to conform lol!

Gen xer here. Saw rage live 3 times. They didn’t up with authority. That struck a chord with many of us that were coming from boomer parents who told us we need to follow the status quo and fall in line. When Zack is saying “some of those that work forces, are the same that burn crosses”, he is saying that there are racist police out there. The original lyrics would change to “some of those that hood office.” The record label forced them to change it. Luckily, they went back to that in live shows, and actually got banned from some tv shows for doing this song when they were told not to.

I saw RATM at a festival Pinkpop in 1993. The crowd of 70000 people were junmping so hard, it caused a small eartquake of 1.5 on the richter scale. I saw them again in 2008 on the same festival, sadly that was the last time I saw them live.

You said Rise Against. Ask them about The Delta Riggs. Underrated Rock and Roll. Try 'The records flawed'. Loved this reaction. Rage were a thing apart. Mind you, when I said to my son, (1999), 'I've seen Screaming Jay', he immediately replied with 'I've seen RTJ'. Bastard. Rage against the machine were a special band though. I hope.
