My thought are that a player needs to play with in the last two month of the season and also the team has to be less then 10% over the cap preferably under the cap but it's the play offs so I'm more lenient considering every game matters.

If your 10 million$ star player gets injured in October and is out for 6 months (April), or in November and is out for 5 months (April), or December and is out for 4 months (April), or January and is out for 3 months (April), or February and is out for 2 months (April), or March (up to the 15th /trade deadline) and is out for 1 month (April), and then comes middle of April and he happens to be 90-95%, will you play him for the last games of the season, or are you going to save him for the playoffs? I totally agree that we can't blame the teams. HOWEVER, how can the NHL know for sure exactly when a player is at 100% health. We don't even know if Mark Stone is actually 100%, or if his injury is still sensitive. Maybe the Golden Knights "cheated" a few days, or maybe he isn't 100% yet. So how does the NHL can determine that? Unless the NHL are sending doctors to make medical reports on the LTIR players who might play in the playoffs, I don't see how they could manage the thin lines. They should let players on the LTIR return for the playoffs. However, teams should pay a tax penalty for exceeding the salary cap regardless if the player could play a week before.

This could be fixed with the simplest of rule changes. The team that's on the ice has to be cap compliant. You can have injured players that go over the cap but if they come back in you need to swap money out. The team on the ice needs to be cap compliant.

the reason vegas is so good is because of the people not on the ice. they draft better than most teams. they trade better than any team. they spend more than any other team on salaries (bonuses). they treat their players to perks, like trips, car washes, clubhouse, etc. look at the oilers as contrast: they dont trade for players. players dont want to play there. they dont want to spend money. all they do is draft, and they arent even very good at it. draisitl might be their best draft pick... and that actually took some intuition. all these people getting mad at vegas, are really mad about how poorly ran their own team is.

I completely agree that what Vegas is doing (and what Tampa di) is legal and within the letter of the rules. I do think that it probably isn't within the spirit of the rules, but that only ever really becomes an issue when things are repeatedly abused. What they need to do is to change the salary cap to only be applied for the 20 man roster for each game, and apply it in the playoffs. Of course this means you could have a hell of a healthy scratch payroll, but it's only backup for injuries, so that would only be depth.

Changing the LTIR rule would hurt the leafs the most they have the highest cap hit but it would also hurt half the League which currently are using LTIR money to go over the cap. Also vegas last night without martinez had a lower cap hit than dallas.

Im a big F1 fan....one of the things you learn pretty quickly is that rules are rules. If you can better your team, car or give yourself an advantage while either bending the rules or finding loopholes.....you go for it. Im not saying in Vegas' context its alright in terms of if your a fan of another team who cant afford to do that or cant do it for other circumstances.....but if you can.....you do it lol. The issue here is that most likely Mark stone was not injured for the whole rest of the regular season and could have played. This would be required if he was healthy but would have screwed their cap, which is why he most likely just pretends to still be injured until the cap doesn’t count anymore. That’s the cheating part everybody is mad about. Not the use of the cap space.

Noah Hanifin in, Alec Martinez out. Michale Amadio, thank you for your service, when a guy loses that "edge" the VGK doesn´t play. We saw it with Fleury, Schmidt, Reaves, Smith. All fan favorites, but they lost that edge. If you look at all 5 of those examples, the front office isn´t wrong. That´s why year in and year out the VGK fight for cups while teams like Washington are dealing with Ovechkin holding the team hostage so he can get a record.

I don't think anyone is ignorant of the fact that this is an NHL problem. (One of many aspects of the league that make it look Mickey Mouse). That being said, nobody is going to convince me that Vegas isn't cheating here. I'm not saying that Mark Stone could've played a month ago, but you're goddamn right he could've played before the playoffs started. The NHL just doesn't give a s#$t. Should the Oilers just convince McDavid to take a vacation 2 weeks before the trade deadline so we can use his 12.5 million to get a bunch of rentals? I'm not sure how a team would "take advantage" of this without getting extremely lucky, like Vegas is, or just lie and cheat. My suggestion is to keep it simple. Stop punishing the healthy teams. I'd suspend the cap limitations 2 weeks before the trade deadline, let any team do whatever they want and load up for the playoffs, but they would have to be compliant for the next season. This would make things more exciting and everyone would be on equal footing.

Teams won’t vote to change this because if they lost their Mcdavid or Matthews or Mackinnon to LTIR , they would lose their mind as would the fans to not have them available in the playoffs. And rightfully so. People forget that most of the cap they took on was retained by the teams that traded with Vegas. They are technically well over the cap with scratched players but on ice cap is minimally over like some other teams playing right now. The narrative has been that VGK would miss the playoffs or get crushed but now they’re cheaters because a stacked #1 seed lost? Why do you say all GMs have to do this to be competitive, but most aren't? The biggest factor to me seems to be the massive tax cuts in some areas. Look at Tampa, Vegas, and FL in recent years. Colorado gets taxed, but much lower than most states.

There is no way to really do anything crazy but I'd say. Either make a max cap for the playoffs like let's say for playoffs your roster in total can only be 90.5 million. Or you can say you have to play before the end of the season like within the last 10-1 games. Vegas is my third favourite team but they did eliminate my team last year in the first round so I understand why people are mad but the fact people cry and spend their time and energy on it is genuinely sad. @@shinyuta This isn’t about whether a team can beat the team infront of them. The #1 seed in the playoffs is coveted prize that rewards the best performing team with the easiest route to winning the title. It in effect does two things one weeding out the good teams and bad teams and using those results to balance performance rewards. A one seed should have the easiest path to the cup otherwise why reward them with the advantages? If its as you say it is then home ice and opponent projected power ranking of deciding opponents would be completely random. Its not that way so why not allow them to pick what they feel is the easiest path? Sometimes you have bad matchups against personal teams despite there records. the 1st place team shouldn't be rewards less than the 2nd place team which is what happened here and its the easiest way to fix that and give the reward properly. Also a side note is it could be strategically used to try to wipe out the 2 seed which on paper is supposed to be the #1 seed biggest competition prior to the stanley cup.

Do I think this LTIR rule is ok ?, absolutely, it's within league rules. Do I think this rule should be changed ? Absolutely, it's a back door way of using a 6mil player to load up for the playoffs and needs to drastically change because there is prob no parity across playoff contenders. Maybe they should just advance all playoff teams 5-6 mil each to load up for playoffs.

Fix seems pretty easy. If the player is put on LTIR it should be treated as a season ending injury. If they are healthy in time for the playoffs then too bad.

I probably wouldn't go that far but the players on LTIR should be ineligible to play in at least round 1 depending on the severity of the injury and the expected timetable for their return. A player is placed on LTIR in November and is expected to miss 4-5 months. Even if they sit out the rest of the regular season I think they're still okay to play in Round 1 Whereas if a player is placed on LTIR in February and is expected to be out for 3 months, they should be ineligible to play in at least Round 1 but may return for the start of Round 2 if their team makes it that far.

@@grahamdamberger7130 This is a pretty balanced way of going about it. If a player isn't off LTIR and dressed for the last game of the season, they aren't eligible to play in the first round. It would curb a lot of the roster shenanigans that teams do going into the playoffs.

They could simply add a rule that adds a cap for playoffs. If your star player gets injured early in the year and you need to replace him to make the playoffs...that's fine. But come playoff time, you need to juggle your cap space and might have to sit some big $$$. It's a trade off.

Clearly people don’t know how recovering from a surgery works. Being unfit to play 4 days ago and fit to play is because you go cleared. You can do anything until you’re medically cleared, but I guess a lot of the arm chair refs at home don’t know how recovering works. You have to be clear to do anything and everything and if stones is 100% cleared, so what if he played as much as he did, what is he supposed to hold back because he cares about you feel at home?

I agree with you that the whole LTIR issue needs to be addressed in the next CBA, but as you said, why wouldn´t any and all GM´s try to manipulate this the most they could? I get why GMs dont do anything about this loop hole since if any other team was in vegas's position, they would want all the help they could get. I dont have ideas on how to fix it other then, injured players must be evaluated by a 3rd party or have some wiggle room for cap compliance in the playoffs

Remember to tell your kids that winning is everything and playing by the rules is for suckers. I kinda see why this country is in the shape it is. There is the law and a reason it was created. Just because a team has no morals and found a way to cheat in the middle of a player's owner's contract dos not make it right. The reason for the cap is so teams in smaller market have a chance. Teams that are in a smaller market can't pay people to sit around as they recover from fake injuries.

@@Chip-hm3ny I did years ago. Play by the rules, ALL THE RULES. And Vegas is playing by the rules as they are setup. As for fake injuries. Almost every good team that uses LTIR has to submit all their paperwork and medical diagnosis's and prognosis's to the league medical experts for verification. Vegas has already stated they provided the NHL all paperwork on Stones injury.

I added it up in a comment above, only about 750k over the cap. However, the LTIR shenanigans enabled them to bring in other players so they could choose which expensive players not to have in the lineup, so Martinez' 5.25M wasn't part of it. I'm sure Edmonton would love to be able to use their full cap space and have 3.85M of Campbell's 5M cap hit not prevent them from having more players on the roster and pretty much every team has a bad contract on their team that they'd leave on the bench if they'd get that player's full cap hit to apply to other players.

@@trenelson9212 Eh, Edmonton's still taking advantage of some things, they have upwards of 3M in deferred cap for a performance bonus, they have players with salary retention (Ekholm has 500k retained, Carrick has 425k retained, Henrique has 4,368,750 retained). Edit: Note, I'm not an Oilers fan, Campbell's just the obvious example considering he's buried. I've debated whether my team should trade for Campbell's contract if the return is sufficient.

Keep a salary cap in the playoffs. But, for every injury during the playoffs, the smallest contract doesn’t count towards the cap and a spot opens up for you to bring in a replacement. Try to keep this cap shenanigans out of the huge players.

Make sure you get a hanky buttercup. Remember. EVERY team Owner/GM and the NHLPA voted for this rule. And the idea that they didn't expect this to be a possibility or that somebody didn't ask if cap compliance was necessary during the playoffs is ridiculous. The owners and the players DON'T CARE if they are cap compliant. Allowing teams to bring back star players in order to be competitive etc is in the best interest of both the owners and the players. Stars and good games put butts in the seats, eye's on the TV and GENERATE REVENUE. This increases profit to the owners, and increases the salary cap for the players. If they thought this was a real issue they could have revisited it prior to the year and voted on it and if the owners wanted it to change could have brought it to the NHLPA. But they don't. Get over it.
