I disagree with 6:13. Karreem wasn't very highly regarded in his era, most people though that Russell, Wilt, and Oscar were better. In 1980 (so after Kareem's peak) Bill Russell was voted as the GOAT. For whatever reason, be it his personality, the boring nature of his game, or modern day Lebron support influencing the perception of Kareem, he has gone up in most peoples rankings as we get further from his playing days.

Steph has changed what the nba as a whole view of what a point guard is. A point guard now is seen as a player who has to have great shooting, must be able to get the ball from one end to the other, and he must also be able to draw defense towards him in order to facilitate his teammates. These heads only look at "assist" and forget that assists don't only have to be direct but indirect as well. Steph "assists" best because he is CONSTANTLY drawing multiple defenders towards him. Which inturn creates opportunities for his teammates. When has Magic ever had multiple defenders constantly chasing his ass because of how dangerous he is??? Exactly never. That is just one example of why Steph is a better PG.

Bill Russel is underrated . Many people think he is a Borderline top 10 because he played a long time ago and he has a lot of hall of fame team mate. For the fact that he played a long time ago it is as much an disadvantage as it is an advantage. Yes there wasn't as many team and as much competition. But he played in worst condition than anybody. I think the more interesting part of flipping the years LeBron and Jordan played is seeing how many people who self-validate through toughness of era would be defending LeBron as being tougher than Jordan in that case. And you know they would because like I said they have attached some level of self-worth to pretending their era was better. I think there is an additional part of LeBron scoring title part that kind needs to be added. I agree you take an all time great scorer like KD, LeBron, Harden and they only try to maintain a scoring title pace they can probably win it every year. I think the big issue is assuming they maintain their efficiency because the reason why Jordan was allowed to take all of those shots is because he maintained a high efficiency while doing so. Most players, this includes LeBron, start to see their efficiency drop as their shot attempts go up. This is because they start having to take less efficient shots for them. Jordan didn't have that problem. He could be just as efficient shooting 18 times a game as shooting 23 times a game.

But he went from d-league/last on the bench to having a (although short) All-Star and arguably All NBA run. I definately agree with what Michael Jordan says about Magic being the best PG of all time, when you truly define what a point guard is. If you want to debate who is greater at the role of pg it's 100% magic, no debate. However, if you want to debate who is better at strrictly basketball it's steph and it's not particularly close. The traditional role of a pg is to bring up the ball and be a playmaker, not jack up 3s from 30 feet out. But in the modern game were we have 7 footers bringing the ball up the court, traditional pg playmaking is not needed. I even know some older people who call the pg position playmaker because that's how it was. However, this is not really the case anymore.

I mess with Steph and there’s many unappreciated things about him, but you need more than that to argue he’s just a point blank, a better basketball player than someone who could average 23 ppg 12 apg on 53% shooting. He'd probably get very close to foul trouble a lot, with VERY different defensive rules from the 80's into the 90's. On the offensive side tho, he'd also have a much easier time getting to the basket and he'd facilitate the 3 point shooters and i think just overall he'd have a much easier and less physical time if he got dropped into this current era.

Heliocentric? I agree with what ur saying before that, but you used heliocentric wrong. Heliocentric is doing everything on ball, for example, Dame, Luka, Lamelo. It means that your game relies on having the ball in your hand at all times. But the reason why Steph is better than those players and actually what separates him from them in terms of general PG skill set, is his off ball movement. He doesnt need the ball to be effective. We will see if Dame did or if he did it out of necesity in Milwaukee this ssn.

I would say Curry because of the way he opens up the game for the rest of the team is just unmatched. He was the first unanimous MVP for a reason, he doesn't just shoot three's he drives, makes passes, and creates opportunities for teammates at an elite level. Now Magic is incredible too of course for so many reasons, but Steph literally changed not only the culture of basketball, like Magic did, but the very way the game is approached. Addition - I could totally be convinced otherwise. I didn't watch Magic growing up so there's definitely some bias haha (edit - y'all putting words in my mouth, I'm not saying Magic isn't an all time generational player, literally on the same level as curry or anything against magic as a player, I'm just saying I'd take curry overall it's not that deep)

My Hot Take: instead of using stats like points per game and assists per game, we should be more concerned about the status points responsible, and this stat should also be restructured. Points responsible is currently defined as points + 2 x assists. This is good because it takes into account that assists count for 2 points, but it doesn't account for assists on 3 pointers. I believe that if points responsible combined points, assists on 2 pointers as 2, and assists on 3 pointers as 3; then it would give a more accurate representation of a players impact on points. I think that if analysts followed this idea, we would be able to weigh the impact that players have on team scoring much better. Assists are one of the more underrated stats because of how they are counted. In the 2022-23 season, Embiid averaged 33.1 ppg and 4.2 apg, and Jokic averaged 24.5 ppg and 9.8 apg. Now looking at these numbers, most would think that Embiid had a bigger impact on scoring because he had a much higher ppg, but Embiid's minimum points responsible for was 41.5 ppg, but Jokic's minimum score was 44.1. Jokic most definitely had more impact on his team scoring than Embiid, but because about 40% of those points come from assists which are not accounted for properly and end up in small numbers that don't accurately represent how many points Jokic was actually responsible for, many analysts but Embiid over Jokic.

I'd add on points from assisted free throws as well. I've always hated how it doesn't count as an assist if the shooter just gets hacked. FTA's are typically more efficient than shots, so you're penalizing the passer for setting up one of the best possible results for the offense.

Also, we should not forget that the 90's were a blessed era for iso players, the illegal defense rule made MJ the dominant player he was (dont get me wrong he'd be good in todays NBA too, but playing against help defense would 100% slow him down). Idk if LeBron had a greater peak, but seing 2012 to 2018 go against the Spurs and the Warriors was quite impressive.

You can argue that LBJ distributes the ball more than MJ that is why his ppg is lower, but the end goal is to turn that pass into points anyway. And MJ creates points on his own directly better than anyone else on a consistent bases. And even more efficiently during playoffs. If Lebron (or anyone) can score by himself at a level as good MJ, there is no reason he wouldn't do it. If it is a big deal for LBJ when he passed the all-time score total, I don't see why he would not want to beat the ppg average as well. The obvious reason for that is it is difficult, and not because he chose not to.

Don't forget about Kareem's nonreplicable college career with 3 straight champions, from an era where playing through collage multiple years was considered the norm. Give Kareem those years as equivalent to being in the NBA (which the competition back then was basically there) and I think Jordan would still be considered G.O.A.T. regardless.

I agree with the Curry vs Magic debate. Best player to start in PG role=Curry (due to his massive +/- impact on the floor). Best PG=Magic. Steph is the better player based on the current competition and his impact on winning. However, Stephs not a pure point guard, he's more of a hybrid guard.

Video 10 of saying basketball needs normalized stats. The Jokic take I agree with even, I just hate we're using TS% instead of TS% compared to league-average efficiency over their careers. The same with PPG/APG/RPG. Jokic could have the same PPG as Kobe and Kobe doing it in the slowest era in the history of the sport would make his 30 something PPG far more impressive...teams were averaging 95 ppg in 2001 (Kobe was putting up 29 a game that season). Last season teams averaged 115 PPG and Jokic was putting up 25. The gap is far more significant than your graphs make it appear. On an average team Kobe was putting up 30.5% of a team's total points and Jokic put up 21.7% of a team's total points. Then let's say you look at TS%. Jokic had a 70.1 TS% last season and in 2001, Kobe had a 55.2 TS%. League average was 51.8 in 2001 (Kobe 3.4% above league average) and 58.1% in 2023 (Jokic +12%). This makes Jokic's efficiency look even better (while also shutting down the people who just look at Kobe's career TS% and call him inefficient). Normalization adds so much more perspective. You obviously enjoy statistics, but I don't know if you're a baseball fan. Baseball uses normalized stats for these arguments and it makes the whole "statistical argument" for how players compare across eras far more valid in my opinion since you're accounting for things like pitcher spin rate in baseball and pace/rule changes (especially surrounding defense) in basketball. Love your videos, just think that basketball needs a lot of help statistically when you're talking about guys who played as vastly different times.
